  1. Pocket Tape-Recorders “Family and Home Magazine” test what’s on the market now.

    1)Pearlcorder S702 $64

This simple model at the bottom of the Olympus range scored the most points for its excellent quality of recording. Background noise hardly affects the sound and recording from a pocket is perfectly possible, but it doesn’t turn off automatically.

Tape length: 30 minutes per side. Weight: 240g.

    2)Sony M9 $49.95

Small and very good looking, sony’s latest offering scored most for appearance. Sounds clear, but there is slight machine noise. The big control buttons are a great improvement on some of the complicated little controls on other tape-recorders. Doesn’t switch off automatically but a red light shows if the machine is still running.

Tape length: 60 minutes per side. Weight: 195g.

    3)Sony M400 $115

Lots of little control buttons that make a noise and are difficult to use . Recording was good but machine noise lost points. Tape counter and automatic switch-off when tape has finished recording or rewinding are useful.

Tape length: 60 minutes per side. Weight: 230g.

    4)Imperial OEM. MC $29.95

Cheap and simple compared with the rest, but recording was good as long as there was no background noise. Use only its own make of cassette. No light to show it is on; no fast forward button and the record button makes a loud noise.

Tape length: 30 minutes per side. Weight: 285g.

    5)Philips 585 $80

Handsome and simple to use, but recording is very poor at more than the recommended distance of 5 cm-designed for dictation. No recording light.

Tape length: 15 minutes per side. Weight: 220g.

1.If you want a machine which turns off automatically and weighs very little you should choose the __________.

    A. Pearlcorder S702 B. Sony M9

    C. Sony M400 D. Philips 585

2.Which machine is unsuitable for general use?

    A. Pearlcorder S702

    B. Imperial OEM MC7

    C. Sony M400

    D. Philips 585

3.What disadvantage does only the Imperial OEM MC7 have?

    A. No light shows when it is on.

    B. It requires a special cassette.

    C. It picks up background noise.

    D. The record button makes a noise.

  2. As an experienced photojournalist in Nashville, Tennessee, I was hired by USA Today newspaper to photograph a spinal bifida (脊柱畸形) corrective surgical procedure. It was to be performed on a twenty-one week old fetus(胎儿)in uterus(子宫)at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. At that time, in 1999, twenty-one weeks in uterus was the earliest that the surgical team would consider for surgery. The worst possible outcome would be that the surgery would cause premature delivery, and no child born earlier than twenty-three weeks had survived.

The tension could be felt in the operating room as the surgery began. A typical C-section cut was made to access the uterus, which was then lifted out and laid at the junction of the mother’s thighs(大腿). The entire procedure would take place within the uterus, and no part of the child was to breach the surgical opening. During the procedure, the position of the fetus was adjusted by gently moving the outside of the uterus. The entire surgical procedure on the child was completed in one hour and thirteen minutes. When it was over, the surgical team breathed a sigh of relief, as did I.

As a doctor asked me what speed of film I was using, out of the corner of my eye I saw the uterus shake, but no one’s hands were near it. It was shaking from within. Suddenly, an entire arm thrust out of the opening, then pulled back until just a little hand was showing. The doctor reached over and lifted the hand, which reacted and squeezed the doctor’s finger. As if testing for strength, the doctor shook the tiny fist. Samuel held firm. I took the picture! Wow! It happened so fast that the nurse standing next to me asked, “What happened?” “The child reached out,” I said. “Oh. They do that all the time,” she responded.

The surgical opening to the uterus was closed and the uterus was then put back into the mother and the C-section opening was closed.

It was ten days before I knew if the picture was even in focus(对焦). To ensure no digital manipulation(篡改) of images before they see them, USA Today requires that film be submitted unprocessed. When the photo editor finally phoned me he said, “It’s the most incredible picture I’ve ever seen.”

1.It can be inferred from the passage that __________.

    A. it’s a very common surgery nowadays.

    B. there was little risk in the operation.

    C. the writer was really a terrific photographer.

    D. the baby’s little hand reacted the doctor’s finger.

2.In 1999, people believed that it was ________.

    A. possible for a fetus 21 weeks born to survive

    B. likely for a fetus born 21 weeks to become abnormal

    C. right time for a fetus born 21 weeks to receive an operation

    D. risky for a fetus 21 weeks in uterus to receive an operation

3.From the second paragraph, we can see that the surgery was ________.

    A. challenging but successful

    B. demanding and unsuccessful

    C. simple and short

    D. long-lasting and difficult

4.The underlined “It” in paragraph 3 refers to________.

    A. the uterus B. the arm of the fetus

    C. the picture D. the head of the fetus

  3. With only about 1,000 pandas left in the world, China is desperately trying to clone (克隆) the animal and save the endangered species(物种).That's a move similar to what a Texas A&M University researchers have been undertaking for the past five years in a project called “Noah's Ark”.

Noah's Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos(胚胎),semen and DNA of endangered animals and storing them in liquid nitrogen(氮). If certain species should become extinct, Dr.Duane Kraemar, a professor in Texas A&M University Medicine, says there would be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the species in the future.

It is estimated that as many as 2,000 species of mammals, birds reptiles will become extinct in over 100 years. The panda, native only to China, is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years.

This week, Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells from a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to implant the embryo into a host animal.

The entire procedure could take from three to five years to complete.

“The nuclear transfer(核子移植) of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available(capable of being used) panda eggs could be a major problem,”Kraemer believes. “They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy (having a baby). It takes a long time and it’s difficult, but this could be groundbreaking science if it works. They are certainly not putting any live pandas at risk, so it is worth the effort,” adds Kraemer, who is one of the leaders of the Project at Texas A & M, the first–ever attempt at cloning a dog.

“They are trying to do something that’s never been done, and this is very similar to our work in Noah’s Ark. We’re both trying to save animals that face extinction. I certainly appreciate their effort and there’s a lot we can learn from what they are attempting to do. It’s a research that is very much needed.”

1.The aim of “Noah’s Ark” project is to________.

    A. make efforts to clone the endangered pandas

    B. save endangered animals from dying out

    C. collect DNA of endangered animals to study

    D. transfer the nuclear of one animal to another

2.The underlined word groundbreaking can be interpreted as __________.

    A. especially new B. pioneering

    C. damaging D. trouble- making

3.The best title for the passage may be ______.

    A. China’s Success in Panda Cloning

    B. The First Cloned Panda in the World

    C. Exploring the Possibility to Clone Pandas

    D. China---the Native Place of Pandas Forever

4.From the passage we know that _______.

    A. Kraemer and his team have succeeded in cloning a dog

    B. scientists try to implant a panda’s egg into a rabbit

    C. Kraemer will work with Chinese scientists in clone researches

    D. about two thousand species will probably die out in a century

  4. When we think of leadership, we often think of strength and power. But what are these really, and how do they operate?

Leadership today is not about forcing others to do things. If this is even possible, it is short-term, and tends to backfire. If you order someone to do something against their will, they may do it because they feel they must, but the anger they feel will do more harm in the long-term, They will also experience fear.

Fear causes the thinking brain to shut down, making the person unable to function at his or her best. If they associate you with this emotion of fear. They will become less functional around you, and you will have succeeded in not only shooting yourself in the foot, but possibly making a very good employee or partner unable to perform effectively. Fear has no place in leadership.

The way we influence people in a lasting way is by our own character, and our understanding and use of emotion. We can order someone to do something, which may be part of the work day; or we can employ them at the emotional level, so they became fully devoted to the projects and provide some of their own motivation (积极性). Today’s work place is all about relationships.

Anyone works harder in a positive environment in which they are recognized and valued as a human being as well as a worker. Everyone produces just a bit more for someone they like. Leaders understand the way things work. They know the pay check is not the single most motivating factor (因素) in the work life of most people.

The true strength of leadership is an inner strength that comes from the confidence of emotional intelligence―knowing your own emotions, and how to handle them, and those of others. Developing your emotional intelligence is the single best thing you can do if you want to develop your relationships with people around you, which is the key to the leadership skills.

1.An employee may have a feeling of fear in the work place when ________.

    A. he is forced to do thing

    B. he cannot work at his best

    C. he feels his brain shut down

    D. he thinks of his work as too heavy

2.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

    A. People tend to associate leadership with fear.

    B. Working conditions affect people’s physical health.

    C. Good relationship is the key to business success.

    D. Smart people are more functional in the work place.

3.To positively influence employees a leader should first of all ________.

    A. provide better suggestions

    B. develop his own personality

    C. give his employees a pay rise

    D. hide his own emotion of fear

4.Good leadership is mainly seen in a leader’s ability to ________.

    A. provide a good working environment

    B. help raise employee’s living standards

    C. give employees specific instructions

    D. deal wisely with employees’ emotions

Crows Have Had a Bad Press

    1. They are smarter than any cat and sometimes children too. But despite this, they have a bad reputation.

“There are a few reasons for this,” says Kevin J. McGowan, a U.S. bird expert, who has studied crows for 25 years. “One is that they’re black, and in western European culture, that’s bad. 2. So somebody died, lying on the side of the road, and the crows came in and picked at it because there it was, free food. ”

Crows are also attacked by gardeners. It’s not deserved, says John Marzluff, professor of wildlife science at the University of Washington. U.S. Marzluff says crows do more good than harm to a garden. “They eat a great variety of crop pest insects,” he said, “so in the family garden they are a good natural insecticide.”

    3.

Crows have strong family values. They come closer to human beings in social behavior than any other animal studied. Crow society is family-based. 4. . When you see a number of crows gathering, they’re usually family groups that are helping each other make a living.

A crow has a big “vocabulary”. It can make around 30 calls unique to itself, each with a different meaning. From their calls, crows can tell the difference between family members, neighbors and strangers.

Young crows like to play. They get an object like a leaf or a feather and they chase each other around, trying to get the object. Then whoever gets it gets chased.

    5. They let others know when they are calm, angry, fearful and playful. Some crow emotions and behavior are amazing, such as leaving goodies-candy, keys or shiny glass-for people who feed them, or pooping on the cars of people who bother them.

    A. Crow emotions are wonderful

    B. Here is something more about crows that you might not know.

    C. Young crows show respect for their parents as humans do.

    D. They also get associated with death because in Europe there are no vultures(秃鹰).

    E. Crows are very smart.

    F. Crows express emotions.

    G. Parents take care of their kids, just like people.

On a crowding train or bus, it is proper for a man offer a woman his seat, particular if she is old or carries a baby. Even when it comes to shake hands, ladies come first. It is impolite for a man to extend his hand for a handshake upon first greeting. Unless a woman does not extend her hand to the man first, the man shouldn’t offer theirs.
