  2. Kyle is my big brother. For eighteen years, I felt that Kyle was my enemy. In fact, I found it ridiculous that people thought older brothers looked out for their sisters, protected them and fought off their sisters, bullies. Huh? My brother was the bully (恃强凌弱者).

When we were little, his fights with others caused my only black eye, cuts in my lips and even a nosebleed or two. I often wished I were an only child!

Time flew. We ended up attending colleges two thousand miles apart, yet, strangely, that’s when we began communicating. Through e-mail, we kept in constant touch. Mostly I complained about serious homesickness, impossible roommates, difficult classes, and… dating. I felt I lost myself. At a particularly low time, I cried to Kyle about my injured confidence, my broken heart, and the particular jerk (蠢人) who broke it.

And that’s when the package arrived.

“What’s this?” I thought as I tore into it. The box revealed a sweatshirt. “Phi Delta Theta? That’s Kyle’s frat (兄弟会).” Kyle was the president of the frat house. Why would he send this? I put it aside and dug deeper. A pile of letters. And they were all addressed to me. I opened the one on top.

“Katrina,” it said, “your brother showed me your picture and I think you’re awesome and beautiful.” I rolled my eyes. “Yeah, sure.” I opened another letter. And another. Eighteen in all.

Each one was from a different guy. They complimented (恭维) me. They invited me on dates. And they tried to convince me to make a trip out to Knox College and meet them.

I loved it. I didn’t care about the motive. And mostly, I loved the idea that my big brother had pulled it off. I picked up the phone.

“Kyle, the box came and I can’t believe what you did.” But Kyle wasn’t accepting compliments. “Oh,” he said, “I was just tired of reading your complaints”. Big brothers, I decided, really did protect their sisters. And mine fought off the biggest bully I’d ever met. Now I return to my true self, full of confidence.

1.Why did the author use to call Kyle her enemy?

    A. He had many fights with her.

    B. He couldn’t fight off her bullies.

    C. He bullied her from time to time.

    D. His fights caused her to suffer a lot.

    A. They had mercy on her.

    B. They tried to cheer her up.

    C. They were struck by her beauty.

    D. They wanted to compliment her.

3.What does the underlined part in the last paragraph refer to?

    A. My self-doubt. B. My homesickness.

    C. The particular jerk. D. The challenging classes.

4.What’s the author’s purpose in writing this passage?

    A. To share her childhood experience.

    B. To complain about her biggest bully.

    C. To show her brother’s protection for her.

    D. To introduce her adjustment to college life.

  3. Here’s an idea whose time has come: A flu shot that doesn’t require an actual shot.

For the first time, researchers have tested a flu vaccine patch (疫苗贴) in a human clinical trial and found that it delivered as much protection as a traditional injection with a needle. Doctors and public health experts have high hopes that it will increase the number of people who get immunized (免疫的) against the flu.

Seasonal flu is responsible for up to half a million deaths around the world each year according to the World Health Organization. A team led by Georgia Tech engineer Mark Prausnitz has come up with an alternative method that uses “microneedles”. These tiny needles are so small that 100 of them, arranged in order on a patch, can fit under your thumb (拇指). Yet they’re big enough to hold vaccine for three types of flu.

None of the study volunteers had serious side effects. The groups that got patches had mild skin reactions that were not seen in the regular needle group, while the volunteers in the regular needle group were more likely to experience pain. Overall, 70 percent of the volunteers who got vaccine patches said they’d rather use them again than get a traditional flu shot. The study authors declared it a success on all fronts.

The biggest beneficiaries could be people in low-and-middle—income countries, where flu vaccines are hard to come by. Reducing pain is nice, but other benefits-the patch costs less, is easier to transport, doesn’t require refrigeration, can be self-administered and doesn’t cause waste of needles — are even better.

“Microneedle Patches have the potential to become ideal candidates for vaccination programs,” wrote Katja Hoschler and Maria Zambon of Public Health England.

1.What is the passage mainly about?

    A. A vaccine patch that cures people of their flu.

    B. A clinical study that protects people from disease.

    C. A patch that makes flu shots a thing of the past.

    D. A method that makes traditional flu shots painless.

2.What do we know about the vaccine patch?

    A. It is produced by the WHO.

    B. It causes slight side effects.

    C. It delivers vaccine to the little finger.

    D. It works badly on 30% of the volunteers.

3.The new patch has all the following benefits except that .

    A. it is provided free of charge

    B. it can be used without a doctor

    C. it can be kept at room temperature

    D. it needs less care in transportation

4.What is Katja and Maria’s attitude towards the new shot?

    A. Cautious. B. Favorable.

    C. Ambiguous. D. Disapproving.

  4. Does your mood change with the seasons?

Some people find that when the temperature goes down, so do their spirits. 1. They eat more and gain weight. They have trouble sleeping. They can’t think clearly.

Here are some ways you can beat the winter blues:

Get out in the sun. Some experts say that winter blues happen because we get less sunlight in the winter than we do in other seasons. Some say that the decrease in sunlight can make us feel sad.2.

Get some exercise. A walk or other exercise will make chemicals called endorphins (内啡肽) flow through your body. Endorphins are natural “feel good” chemicals.

    3. Avoid having too much sugar. If you crave sugary foods (like cookies or candy), it may be a sign that you need more protein (蛋白质), like meat, chicken, or fish.

Avoid holiday stress. Cut back if you have too many things to do. Make sure you have some quiet time to yourself.4. Get some rest. Studies show that most teens need about nine hours of sleep each night. The average teen, though, gets only about six or seven hours of sleep per night.

Get help. Be cautious if you feel sad all the time and the feeling won’t go away.5. Talk to an adult who you trust or get help from a doctor.

    A. Eat more healthful foods.

    B. Choose different foods in season.

    C. Don’t be so busy that you get run-down.

    D. Those people sometimes feel sad for no reason.

    E. You may have a bigger problem than the winter blues.
