  2. From Dusner (3 speakers) to Kelabit (5 thousand) to Yiddish (1.5 million), these languages are spread, but like the Indian elephant, they are in danger of dying out. Dr. Chris Mazdzer, a researcher at Oxford University, organizing a meeting on endangered languages thinks there could be a novel way to keep minority languages alive: social media. He says, “Because young people text each other how they speak, even if they don’t know how to spell it.”

Minority languages are often at risk of being drowned(淹死)out by the bigger ones, which are spoken at school and in the media. But the appearance of Facebook and Twitter might just have the unexpected effect. Dr. Mazdzer speaks Frisian, which has 350,000 speakers. Communicating with his own language has given him thought about how languages could be saved in the future. “In Friesland, young people who don’t learn much Frisian at school send each messages on social media in Frisian”, he says. In this way, a new generation of Frisian speakers keeps the language alive.

Though many of these languages only have a few speakers, it’s not just a small number of speakers that make a language endangered. Some languages were once widely spoken, but lost speakers over time. This can happen for many reasons, like only one language spoken in school or people moving away from their home and losing their language.

Tweeting and texting in Frisian (or Sorbian, or Breton) is not enough in the long term, though. There are many other things we need to do. But why is a language worth saving in the first place? Because our languages are natural creations. Natural beauty needs to be protected.

1.What can prevent a language from dying out according to Dr. Mazdzer?

    A. Speaking and spelling it frequently.

    B. Communicating in it on social media.

    C. Keeping reading texts written in the language.

    D. Organizing meetings on endangered language.

2.How did Dr Mazdzer find a way to keep a language alive?

    A. Through the lab experiments. B. Through his early study.

    C. Through his first-hand experience. D. Through the analysis of numbers.

3.What’s the major cause of languages’ becoming endangered according to Paragraph 3?

    A. Losing speakers over time.

    B. A small number of speakers.

    C. Being drowned out by bigger languages.

    D. The appearance of Facebook and Twitter.

4.For what purpose does the author write the passage?

    A. To tell us the danger of losing our native languages.

    B. To show the importance of bigger languages.

    C. To appeal to us to protect the minority languages.

    D. To call on us to have more communication with others.

  3. October 15th is the Global Handwashing Day. Activities are planned in more than 20 countries to get millions of people in the developing world to wash their hands with soap(肥皂). For example, donators(捐献者)will give 150,000 bars of soap to schools in Ethiopia.

Experts say people around the world wash their hands every day, but very few use soap at so-called important moments. These include after using the toilet, after cleaning a baby and before touching food.

Global Handwashing Day is the idea of the Public-Private Partnership for Handwashing with Soap. Partners include the United Nations Children’s Fund, American government agencies, the World Bank and soap makers Unlever and Procter and Gamble. The organizers say all soaps are equally effective at removing disease-causing germ(细菌). They say the correct way to wash is to wet your hands with a small amount of water and cover them with soap. Rub it into all areas, including under the fingernails. Rub for at least twenty seconds. Then rinse well under running water. Finally, dry your hands with a clean cloth or wave them in the air.

The Partnership for Handwashing says soap is important because it increases the time that people spend in washing hands. Soap also helps to break up the dirt that holds most of the germs. And it usually leaves a pleasant smell. The Partnership for Handwashing also says washing with soap before eating or after using the toilet could save more lives than any vaccine(疫苗)or medicine. Hand washing could also prevent the spread of other diseases. When people get germs on their hands, they can infect(传染)themselves by touching their eyes, noses or mouths. Then they can infect others.

1.What’s the best title for this passage?

    A. Find out why washing hands carefully is so important.

    A. to dry your hands B. to rub your hands carefully

    C. to clean your fingers D. to wash away the soap

    A. how to wash your hands correctly

    B. why washing hand with soap is so important

    D. when we should especially wash our hands with soap

Culture shock is caused by the feelings that result from losing all familiar signs and symbols of social intercourse(交往). Those signs include the ways with which we are familiar in daily life: When to shake hands and what to say when we meet people? When and how to give tips? How to go shopping? When to accept and when to refuse invitations? These signs, which may be words, gestures, facial expressions, customs or normals are gained by all of us in the course of growing up and are as much a part of our culture as the language we speak.

During the first few weeks when a person enters a strange culture, most people are attracted by the new. But this “cooks tour” type of mentality(心态)does not normally last if the foreign visitor remain abroad and has to seriously deal with real conditions of life. He may feel anxious and frustrated(受挫的) People react to the frustration in the same way. During the first period, they reject the environment which causes the discomfort. “The ways of the host country are bad because they make us feel bad,” they complain about the host country and its people. The following period is homesickness. The home environment suddenly becomes so important that all difficulties and problems are forgotten and only the good things back home are remembered.

Experiencing culture shock can be very difficult. There is a risk of sickness or emotional problems. However, culture shock can be part of a positive learning experience. Be patient!
