  1. Have you ever suddenly felt that someone you know was in trouble ― and he was? Have you ever dreamed something that came true later? Maybe you have ESP.

ESP stands for Extra Sensory Perception. It may be called a sixth sense. It seems to let people know about events before they happen, or events that are happening some distance away.

Here is an example: A woman was doing washing. Suddenly she shouted, “My father is dead! I saw him sitting in the chair!” Just then, a telephone came. The woman’s father had died of a heart illness. He died sitting in a chair.

There are thousands of stories like this on record. Scientists are studying them to find out what is behind these strange mental messages. Here’s another example —— one of hundreds of dreams that have come true.

A man dreamed he was walking along a road when a horse and carriage came by. The driver said, “There’s room for one more.” The man felt the driver was Death, so he ran away. The next day the man was getting on a crowded bus. The bus driver said, “There’s room for one more”. Then the man saw the driver’s face was the same face he had seen in the dream. He wouldn’t get on the bus. As the bus drove off, it crashed and burst into fires. Everyone was killed!

Some people say stories like these are lies or coincidences. Others say that are ESP in true, from studies of ESP, we may some day learn more about the human mind.

1.ESP lets people know about _________.

A.their dream                           B.events after they happen

C.events before they happen                D.heart illness

2.The example of the man shows the ability to _______.

    A.avoid traffic accidents

B.know the good and bad of a person

C.know about the events happening some distance away

D.sense a danger that will happen later on

3.The best title of this passage is _________.

    A.Sixth Sense                            B.The Human Mind

C.A Big Lie                              D.A Terrible Dream

  2. For years scientists have been worried about the effects of air pollution on the earth’s natural conditions. Some believe the air inside many houses may be more dangerous than the air outside. It may be one hundred times worse.

Indoor air pollution can cause a person to feel tired, to suffer eye pain, headache and other problems. Some pollutants can cause breathing disorders, diseases of blood and even cancer. Most scientists agree that every modern house has some kind of indoor pollution.

People have paid more attention to the problem now. It is true that when builders began making houses and offices they did not waste energy. To do this they build buildings that limited the flow of air between inside and outside. They also began using man-made building materials. These materials are now known to let out harmful gases.

As the problem became more serious, scientists began searching for a way to deal with it. They discovered a natural pollution control system for building—green plants. Scientists do not really know how plants control air pollution. They believe that a plant’s leaves absorb or take in the pollutants. In exchange the plant lets out oxygen through its leaves and tiny organizations on its roots. Scientists suggest that all buildings should have one large plant or several small plants inside for every nine square meters of space. Studies of different plants show that each absorbs different chemicals. So the most effective way to clean the air is to use different kinds of plants. Having green plants inside your house can make it a prettier and more healthy place.

1.Generally speaking, indoor air pollution may be more harmful than the air outside because ______.

A.indoor air pollution can often make people seriously ill

B.man-made building materials give off dangerous gases

C.there may be more harmful gases outside the buildings

D.the air indoors is polluted, which is very harmful

C.all kinds of houses           D.all kinds of offices

3.The indoor air pollution is caused by ______.

A.the limit of the flow of air between inside and outside

B.the building way that the builders want to save energy

C.the building things that are made of man-made materials

D.the man-made building materials and the limit of air-flow

4.The reason why we should use different kinds of plants to clean the air is that ______.

A.plants can let out all kinds of pollutants indoors

B.plants may take in more oxygen which people need

C.plants can absorb all kinds of harmful indoor chemicals

D.plants can make our houses prettier and more healthy

  3. People who are hit by lightning and survive often have long-term effects. These may include memory loss, sleep disorders, muscle pain and depression.

Experts tell people to seek the safety of a building or a hard-top vehicle any time they hear thunder, even if it is not raining. They say lightning can strike as far as sixteen kilometers from any rainfall. Lightning can travel sideways. And at least ten percent of lightning happens without any clouds overhead that you can see.

People who are outdoors should make sure they are not the tallest thing around. Bend low to the ground, but do not lie down. And do not stand near tall object. Get away from water and anything made of metal. A car is safe, but don’t touch any metal inside.

Safety experts say people in buildings should stay away from anything with wires or pipes that lead to the outside. The National Weather Service says if you plan to disconnect any electronic equipment, do so before the storm arrives. Do not  use a wired telephone. Do not use water. All these can carry electricity.

Some people think a person struck by lightning carries an electrical charge afterward. Experts say this is not true. It is safe to begin emergency treatment

Each year about four hundred people in the United States are struck by lightning. Last year forty four people died. The average is close to seventy. The National Weather Service says that is more than the number of people killed by severe storms.

  4. I had an experience some years ago, which taught me something about the ways in which people make a bad situation worse by themselves. One January, I had to hold two funerals on successive days for two elderly women in my community. Both had died “full of years”, as the Bible would say .Their homes happened to be near each other, so I paid condolence(吊唁)calls on the two families on the same afternoon.

At the first home, the son of the deceased woman said to me, ”If only I had sent my mother to Florida and gotten her out of this cold and snow, she would be alive today. It’s my fault that she died. ”At the second home, the son of the other deceased woman said, “If only I hadn’t insisted on my mother’s going to Florida, she would be alive today .That long airplane ride, the sudden change of climate ,was more than she could take. It’s my fault that she’s dead.”

You see that any time there is a death, the survivors will feel guilty. Because the course of action they took turned out bad, they believe that the opposite course------keeping mother at home, putting off the operation----would have turned out better. After all, how could it have turned out any worse?

There seem to be two elements involved in our willingness to feel guilty. The first is our pressing need to believe that the world makes sense, that there is a cause for every effect and a reason for everything that happens. That leads us to find patterns and connections both where they really exist and where they exist only in our minds.

The second element is the view that we are the cause of what happens, especially the bad things that happen. It seems to be a short step from believing that every event has a cause to believing that every disaster is our fault. The roots of this feeling may lie in our childhood.

A baby comes to think that the world exists to meet his needs, and that he makes everything happen in it. He wakes up in the morning and summons the rest of the world to his tasks. He cries, and someone comes to attend to him. When he is hungry, people feed him,and when he is wet, people change him. Very often, we don not completely outgrow that childish view that our wishes cause things to happen.

1.The author had to conduct the two women’s funerals probably because_______.

A.he was minister of the local church

B.he wanted to comfort the two families

C.he was an official of the community

D.he had great pity for the deceased

2.People feel guilty for the death of their loved ones because________.

A.they can’t find a better way of express their sorrow

B.they have neglected the natural course of events

C.they believe that they were the reason

D.the don’t know things often turn in the opposite direction

3.According to the main passage, the underlined part in Paragraph 4 probably means that________.

A.everything in the world is predetermined

B.there’s an explanation for everything in the world

C.the world can be interpreted in different ways

D.we have to be sensible in order to understand the world

4.What’s the main idea of the message?

A .Life and death is an unsolved mystery.

    B. Never feel guilty all the time because not every disaster is our fault.

C Every story should have a happy ending.

    D. In general, the survivors will feel guilty about the people who passed away.

We are now living in an information world that TV, cell phones and the Web are wide used. It seems that many people can not enjoy them without them. However, if I had to give up one of them, I will turn off the TV rather than switch off my cell phone and cut off the Internet. I could do without TV because few show take my fancy and there’re too many commercials. Besides, most programs on the TV are also available elsewhere. As for cell phones and the Web, they are more necessarily to me. I need a cell phone to keep touch with my friends and family, and almost all information can be gather on the Internet.
