  1. How many men do housework? Recently a European Commission tried to find out people’s ideas and reactions to the women’s movement. As part of their survey, they asked many men and women the question, “Who does the housework?” The men answered very differently from the women!

The housework they asked people about were: preparing meals, washing dishes, cleaning the house and babysitting. 48% of British husbands said they did these things. 37% of Danish men helped in the house. But only 15% of Italian men said they did the housework, many of them said they never helped at all!

But there was an interesting point of view from the wives. According to British wives, only 38% of their husbands helped in the house. And Italian wives said that their husbands hardly ever helped. The Italian and British men did not tell the truth! The Commission found that Danish men were the most trustful husbands; their answers were the same as their wives’ answers.

Do the men you know help in the house? Do you think the survey gives a true picture in your experience? Write and tell us what you think.

  2. Do you often lose things? Don’t worry. Now a new tool that can be connected to any object you might lose may be the way to solve your problem. The Tile, a small square linked up to your iphone or ipad by means of Bluetooth, lets you see how close you are to your missing item, within a 50-to-150-foot range. If the item goes out of your phone’s 150-foot range, it can still be found on other smart phones with the same app.

When you drive the app on your phone, it shows you, with green bars that increase or decrease, how close or far away you are from the Tile. You can also program it to make a sound when you get close to the Tile. And you can link up your phone with up to ten Tiles. And if your lost object—a dog, for example, or a stolen bike—go out of your own phone’s 150-foot Bluetooth range, you can set it as a “lost item”. If any of the phones with the Tile app comes within range of your lost item, a message will be sent to your phone, telling you its position. The Tile app also has the function to remember where it last saw your Tile, so that you can easily find where you left it.

Since the Tiles use Bluetooth rather than GPS, they are never out of battery or needn’t to be charged, and they work for one year before needing to be replaced. And the app works with all generations of iPhones and iPads.

2.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

    A. The Tile needs to be charged after a year of use.

    B. One smart phone can only be linked up with one Tile.

    C. A missing item can’t be found if it goes out of your phone’s Bluetooth range.

    D. The Tile cannot be linked up with a phone without Bluetooth.

3.What does the second paragraph mainly tell us?

    A. What the Tile app is.

    B. The advantages of the Tile app.

    C. How the Tile app works.

    D. Why the Tile app was created.

4.Where does the passage probably come from?

  4. My friend Jim was a well-known radio host, who worked at a radio station all his life. All his colleagues knew him about one characteristic: If he’s on-air, he is always wearing a suit and a tie. They laughed at him, saying, “No one ever sees you. Why do you dress like that?” But he always turned that into a joke.

One day Jim was invited to appear on the TV. There was a show for the oldest radio employees. For the first time his fans, who only knew Jim by his voice, would see him. Before the recording of the show, the director came to Jim and asked, “Usually you arrive on time, but today you are 10 minutes late. It’s not terrible, but I still want to know why.”

“You see,” Jim answered, “at the last moment when I was already dressed up, I noticed that I didn't have new socks. For the first time I was invited to the television, and I thought that simply wearing clean socks was not enough. So I needed to go to the store for new socks.”

The director was surprised. He asked, “Why do you need new socks? You could have come without the socks because we will be filming you only over the waist.”

“ You see, to be perfect, I need to feel myself perfect in everything, starting with the shirt and finishing with the pen in my pocket,” Jim said. “And if my socks have holes in them or my shoes are dirty, I’m not spotless anymore. And it may make me less confident.”

1.From Para. 1 we can learn that when Jim is on-air, he______.

    A. likes telling jokes

    B. behaves strangely

    C. always wears the same clothes

    D. is careful about his dress

    A. he went to buy new socks

    B. he didn’t like to be filmed

    C. he had to clean his clothes

    D. he was too nervous

3.For Jim, being perfect in everything ______.

    A. brings him success

    B. makes him popular

    C. gives him confidence

    D. is difficult but necessary

Although many Chinese students say their knowledge of English grammar is good, most would admit that their spoken English is poor. 1._________ However, their spoken English does not have to remain poor. I would suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English.

First, 2. Obviously the better answer is to expand their vocabulary. However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary if your attitude is positive. Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know.

Second, 3._.Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous. Yet students should remember that their goal should be FLUENCY NOT ACCURACY. You want to get your message across, to talk to someone in English, as quickly and as well as you can, even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense, but it doesn't matter because the person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowance for any mistakes he hears.

Third, 4._ .You have one mouth but two ears! All that hearing is necessary for you to start speaking.

Fourth,5._ .Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English, they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their spoken English always remains poor. If you have this proactive outlook, then you will see English opportunities wherever you go.

A.not enough attention is paid to listening.

    B. they fail to find suitable words to express themselves because of limited vocabulary.

C.most Chinese students are not active language learners.

D.They are so stupid that they cannot finish their necessary homework in time.

AB.Whenever I speak to Chinese students they always say, “My spoken English is poor.”

AC.it is no use crying over spilt milk.

AD.they are afraid of making mistake.
