  2. Mom wanted only one thing for her birthday. “Can you find me another copy of this song?” she asked, and handed me a worn-out cassette tape (磁带). I knew exactly what was recorded on it: My Redeemer (救世主). I heard the song played at least a thousand times while growing up. After so many years, the cassette tape was too worn out to be used. I promised her I would find a replacement.

My Redeemer became Mom’s favorite song after my younger brother Tim was killed by a drunk driver in 1973. The only thing that helped her calm down was the soulful sound of My Redeemer from the local radio station.

We recorded it on a cassette tape so she could listen to it any time she wanted but none of us knew who the soloist (独唱者) was. These days, I thought the song would be easy to find out. I went home and searched the Internet. Several songs with that title popped up, but none of them was the one Mom loved. I got frustrated.

Mom’s birthday drew near and then one day, I was driving home, listening to our local radio station. A familiar tune came on. It was My Redeemer! As soon as I could, I phoned the station. I got a line on the soloist, who was called Alan Parks. I typed his name into Google and found his home number in South Carolina. Minutes later, I was telling him how much his recording meant to Mom. He offered to ship two CDs out to me personally. I gave him my address.

‘Red Lion, Pennsylvania?’ he said. ‘Do you know the Logans?’ ‘They are our neighbors!’ ‘I’ve been friends with them for 25 years,’ Alan said. ‘They’ll be at my concert at York Gospel Chapel on April 17th. Would you and your mom come too” We sure would. Mom was excited to hear Alan sing My Redeemer to her, live in concert —on the evening of her 87th birthday.

1.Why was the song My Redeemer so important to the author’s mother?

    A. Tim gave it to her.

    B. It was a comfort to her.

    C. It was a love for her husband.

    D. It reminded her of her friends.

2.What does the underlined part “popped up” in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A. Looked up. B. Showed up.

    C. Got up. D. Woke up.

3.What can we learn about Alan Parks from this passage?

    A. He lived in Red Lion, Pennsylvania.

    B. He offered to give the author two cassette tapes.

    C. He invited the author and her mother to the concert.

    D. He would sing for the author’s mom on the radio station.

4.Which of the following is most surprising?

    A. The author’s mother celebrated her 87th birthday.

    B. Alan Parks was an old friend of the author’s neighbors.

    C. Alan Parks happened to get to know the author’s mother

    D. The author and Alan Parks lived in the same neighborhood.

  3. Most nations have at least one type of food that people from other countries think is unusual or unacceptable to eat. In France, people eat horse meat and frog legs. In South Korea and parts of China, restaurants serve dog meat. And in Australia, it’s common to cook kangaroo meat on the barbecue and use emu eggs to make pancakes.

The kangaroo and emu are native to Australia. Both animals are important to the national image of Australia and appear on the Australian coat of arms. They’re also central figures in the history of the native Australians. However, they still hunt these animals for their meat, fur and fat.

Today, Australian people continue to eat these animals. One of the reasons people eat kangaroo meat is that it’s high in protein and low in fat, so eating kangaroo is a good option for anyone on a diet. It’s also cheaper to eat kangaroo meat than other red meats. Because of this, a lot of university students choose to buy kangaroo meat. BBC News also reported that Australian scientists believe that eating kangaroo meat is good for the environment— kangaroos have different digestive systems than cows and sheep, meaning they produce less methane, the second biggest contributor to global warming.

While emu meat is high in iron and vitamin C, most people don’t think it tastes good. For this reason, they prefer emu eggs. One egg is large enough to make seven omelettes (煎蛋). And while ifs illegal to collect emu eggs from the wild, they can be bought from emu farms. Rather than cracking the beautiful dark shell, it’s better to dry it by putting a small hole at each end and blowing. Afterwards, you can even carve a design into the eggshell.

1.What is the purpose of the first paragraph?

    A. To introduce the topic of the article.

    B. To tell us the cultural differences of eating.

    C. To suggest that different countries have different habits.

    D. To indicate that people try to adapt to other countries’ diets.

2.According to the article, the kangaroo ________.

    A. dies out due to hunting by Aboriginal tribes.

    B. is full of large amounts of iron and vitamins in its meat.

    C. is not considered healthy and environmentally friendly to eat.

    D. is considered important in the history of the native Australians.

3.What is the main idea of paragraph 3?

    A. Report the contributor to global warming.

    B. Analyze the reasons why people eat kangaroo meat.

    C. Tell people the fact that people like eating kangaroo.

    D. Explain the benefits of eating kangaroo meat on the environment.

4.Which of the following statements is TRUE about emu eggs?

    A. Emu eggs are all very small.

    B. Emu eggs taste delicious and nutritious.

    C. Emu egg shells can be used to create art.

    D. It’s common for Australians to collect emu eggs from the wild.

  4. A “virtual (虚拟的) cocktail” glass that lets you change the flavor (味道) of your drink using your Smartphone has been developed by scientists.

Offering a customizable (定制的) range of drinks and tastes, the Vocktail can change a glass of water into a cocktail at the press of a button. The world’s first technology tricks your brain into thinking it is experiencing a specific flavor by fooling your senses of sight, smell and taste.

Developed by researchers at the National University of Singapore, the glass’ three sensory components are controlled via a Smartphone App. Because the software can combine a number of smells, colors and tastes, the Vocktail can create almost any flavor.

Developer Nimesha Ranasinghe said: “Our approach is to increase drinks flavor experience by overlaying outer sensory stimuli (刺激物). For example, in the Vocktail we overlay color, taste and smell sensations to create an adjustable flavor experience. Flavor is mainly how we feel food and that is achieved through the use of these senses. Therefore, by changing the color of the drink, using different smells and changing the taste through electricity, we are able to copy the flavor of a drink without it actually changing the liquid.”

The glass houses three fragrance containers connected to micro-air pumps. The pumps release smell that change your feeling of the drinks, flavor. For example, a lemon fragrance will trick your brain into believing it is tasting lemon-flavored drink.

On the outside edge of the glass are two electrode strips (电焊条) that send electric pulses into your tongue to stimulate your sense of taste and flavor differs with different pulses.

    1.What controls the sensory components?

    A. An electrode strip. B. A Smartphone App.

    C. Fragrance container. D. A micro-air pump.

    2.How does the Vocktail work?

    A. By transforming the inner liquid.

    B. By stimulating the tip of one’s tongue.

    C. By putting different kinds of drinks together.

    D. By tricking one’s brain into flavor experience.

3.What does the underlined “that” in the 4th paragraph refer to?

    A. The flavor. B. The software.

    C. The Vocktail. D. The button.

4.What can be the best title for the text?

    A. Smartphone Create a Kind of Liquid.

    B. Vocktail Make Water Taste Like Cocktail.

    C. Approaches Found to Change Water into Wine.

    D. Smartphone Produces Smells, Colors and Tastes.
