  2. Growing up in the mountainous Sierra de Penamayor, in Asturias, northen Spain, Aladino Montes had been shooting deer ever since he was a child, but his life as a hunter came to an abrupt end 10 years ago, when he met Bambi, an adorable deer that has remained by his side ever since. Aladino has never shot an animal since.

53-year-old Aladino recalls driving through the mountains in his little jeep, ten years ago, when he saw a couple of cows being followed by a skinny little deer. Deer don’t usually hang out with cows, so he approached the animals for a closer look. That’s when he noticed that the deer had several wounds and would have probably died without proper medical care. He put the injured animal in his car and drove back to his house when he nursed it back to health. But instead of running back towards the forests, the deer stayed by Aladino’s side. They’ve been best friends ever since.

He always loved animals, but his father had taught him to hunt deer as a child. He did it for food, not sports, but ever since he adopted Bambi, he hasn’t shot a single animal.

Aladino’s cabin sits at 1,140 meters above sea level, offering tourists a beautiful view of the surrounding mountainside. On clear days, one can see all of central Asturias all the way to Gijon, but most people don’t travel to Les Praeres for the view, they come to see Bambi, the friendly deer.

Sometimes, Bambi will elk straight into the bar in search of Aladino and leave everyone with their mouth open, or even let people pet her. But she’s always most comfortable at the side of her rescuer. She’s so relaxed around him that she makes other deer feel safe as well.

1.What does the underlined word “abrupt” in Paragraph 1 mean?

    A. Quick. B. Happy.

    C. Sudden. D. Slow.

2.What made Aladino give up hunting?

    A. The kind cows. B. His kind-hearted nature.

    C. The deer’s bad conditions. D. His rescue of the wounded deer.

3.What do you know about the little deer Bambi now?

    A. It is a tourist attraction. B. It is doing nothing.

    C. It is a symbol of friendship. D. It is living under the natural state.

4.What does the deer Bambi like to do best?

    A. Go to the bar. B. Stay around Aladino.

    C. Let people pet her. D. Attract other deer to some near.

  3. Sue Hendrickson is a self-taught fossil(化石)hunter. As a kid, Sue Hendrickson often walked with her head down. “People said, ‘Look up. Smile!” she says. “Now, I realize I was born to look for things and just didn’t know it.”

Sue Hendrickson does more than look—she finds valuable things: Shipwrecks(沉船)with treasure, ancient sunken cities, and in 1990, she found Sue, the world’s largest, most complete Tyrannosaurus rex(霸王龙). Is Hendrickson lucky? Well, maybe. But she also knows how to look.

“I limit the area where I’m going to look,” she says. No one knew the location of the sunken ship San Diego in the Philippines. For a year, Hendrickson and other researchers searched papers and sailors’ diaries. “The descriptions of the ship’s sailors led us to the wreck,” she says. The team also used a tool that can respond to metal. This tool found the San Diego. All the work paid off. The 400-year-old ship was complete, with valuable gold and silver coins.

To find the dinosaur she calls “the biggest animal that ever walked on earth,” Hendrickson started with maps made to search for oil. What Hendrickson found was the largest and most complete T-rex found to date. The T-rex is 42 feet long with 200 bones! Because it is so complete, scientists were able to infer that Sue walked at about 6 miles per hour and did not run faster than 15 miles an hour. Before Sue was discovered, they thought T-rex was much faster. To learn more about T-rex Sue, go to the Field Museum in Chicago.

There’s plenty left to be found, Hendrickson says, including answers to mysterious such as how T-rex lived. “I tell kids that they need to grow up and work them out because all of us old persons haven’t yet!”

    1.What’s Paragraph 2 mainly about?

    A. An ancient city. B. Hendrickson’s hobby.

    C. The world’s largest T-rex. D. Hendrickson’s great findings.

2.How did Hendrickson find the sunken ship San Diego?

    A. With a self made tool. B. By starting with research.

    C. By following sailor’s lead. D. With the help of oil maps.

3.What can we learn about T-rex Sue?

    A. It helped scientists learn new things about T-rex.

    B. It ran faster than any other T-rex.

    C. It let people know how T-rex lived.

    D. It was the biggest dinosaur.

4.What does Hendrickson advise kids to do?

    A. Find more details. B. Explore mysteries.

    C. Visit the Field Museum. D. Respect scientific research.

  4. For more than fifty years, a worker was forced to sit on the back of a truck and slowly drop plastic barriers(障碍)

to set out lanes(车道)on the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Every day, their direction changes to control the traffic, meaning an employee had to go through the difficult task every twenty-four hours.

But a new piece of machinery means the work can be completed in a matter of minutes. A new “zipper truck” has been introduced. The vehicle lays and moves a lane barrier as it drives over the bridge. Last weekend, the bridge was closed so the new safety barrier, designed to reduce the dangers of head-on crashes, could be set up.

For the longest period in its nearly eighty-year history, the bridge was closed early Saturday to all but walkers, cyclists and buses to set up the barriers on the 1.7-mile bridge. A survivor of a 2008 head-on crash on the bridge spoke Sunday from a wheelchair to help introduce the new barrier, made of steel-clad concrete(铜包混凝土)blocks that can move across the bridge’s six lanes to meet traffic needs.

Gr. Grace Dammann pushed for a safer barrier since becoming unable to walk after the accident. She said she decided to drive near the middle of the bridge, which was called the “suicide(自杀)lane”, because she and her daughter were running late. Brian Clark, who was driving in the opposite direction, had just learned his father had cancer. “He suddenly lost control of the wheel, crossed over and hit my car,” Dammann said.

She said she and Clark became friends as they persuaded(说服)the government to use the MYM30 million barrier. “I am so thankful,” said Dammann, who came to the ceremony with Clark.

    “Clark and I thank you.”

1.What is the zipper truck for?

    A. Building bridges. B. Repairing the road.

    C. Carrying plastic barriers. D. Setting up safe lane barriers.

2.What can we infer about the Golden Gate Bridge?

    A. It is being repaired now. B. It is a bridge with eight lanes.

    C. It had very dangerous lanes before. D. It is too old to be used at the moment.

3.What do we learn about Dammann and Clark?

    A. They organized the ceremony. B. They are both government officials.

    C. They designed the new zipper truck. D. They were in favor of the new barrier.

4.What is the text mainly about?

    A. A worker on the Golden Gate Bridge. B. A great bridge in San Francisco.

    C. A new safer barrier system. D. A serious traffic accident.
