Recently he has just stopped doing that. During the past few years, he has saved the lives of more than 2.4 million babies by giving his blood. Harrison 's blood contains something special that can be used to develop medicine to prevent unborn babies from dying of blood diseases.

In fact, a number of newborn babies are easy to get some kinds of blood diseases. Just because of Harrison, many new mothers can see the hope of saving their babies. Giving blood is a kind of great charity. Harrison is always glad and ready to do it. But now he has passed the age limit (年龄限制) for donors to continue giving blood in Australia. Harrison has made his 1,173rd and final donation recently.

  3. Learning a language is a long and difficult process. This process can become easier if you set goals (目标). However, if your goals are too dfficult, you will probably become upset.

Many English learners set unreasonable goals, such as sounding like a native speaker (母语使用者), or losing their accents (口音 ). The goal of sounding like a native speaker is not easy for many people.

When English learners begin studying English after a certain age, they are not able to sound exactly like a native speaker. That’s the opinion of Eli Hinkel, a professor at Seattle Pacific University. She says that people who have not reached puberty (青春期) still have enough muscle (肌肉) and brain plasticity (可塑性)to allow their brain to control their mouth muscles. After your physical growth has stopped, the brain loses some of its ability to change the way it controls the muscles of the mouth. This is what results in an accent, according to Hinkel.

Having an accent does not mean that your language skills are poor or you should give up improving your pronunciation. Hinkel suggests English learners should not be too upset about their accents.

Another teacher says sounding like a native speaker is not necessary. Marla Yoshida is a teacher at the University of California, Irvine. She says that improving your pronunciation is surely possible—if you choose a reasonable goal. Marla Yoshida says that when you decide to diet, you may succeed if you set reasonable goals. She suggests working on certain areas of pronunciation that you can improve, instead of trying to sound like a native speaker.

1.What does the underlined part“unreasonable goals”probably refer to?

    A. Goals that are meaningless. B. Goals that are too small.

    C. Goals that are interesting D. Goals that are impossible to reach.

2.Why are English learners unable to sound like a native speaker?

    A. They have no native speakers to talk to. B. They don’t have enough time to practice.

    C. Their brain can’t control their mouth muscles. D. Their mother language stops them from doing so.

3.Which of the following statements would Eli Hinkel probably agree with?

    A. Having an accent is acceptable B. Improving pronunciation isn’t that important.

    C. Sounding like a native speaker is impossible. D. Poor pronunciation means poor language skills.

4.What does the passage mainly want to show?

    A. Learning English well isn’t as easy as we think.

    B. We should try our best to sound like a native speaker

    C. Everyone can learn English well if he/she tries hard.

    D. We can improve our pronunciation by setting reasonable goals.

  4. Typical American teenagers used to look forward to growing up. Getting their first driver’s licenses (驾照)or doing their first part- time jobs was an exciting event in most teens’ lives.

But these days, fewer teens are celebrating these events.According to a study published in the joumal Child Development, fewer American teens are doing “adult”activities like driving and working.

Perhaps too much homework is to blame(责备). But that’s not the truth.“Teens usually spend less time on homework now than they did in the 1990s,” The Atlantic reported.

Child Development expert(专家) Jean Twenge says technology may be to blame. In her research, she says that today's teens are different from past generations (几代)because they are the first generation to grow up with social media and smartphones.

What kind of effect does it have on how quickly kids grow up? More time spent playing with technology means less time spent on other things. This may explain why fewer kids are interested in“adult”activities these days.

In the past, getting the first driver ' s license was seen as something “cool” that could impress one's friends. But today, kids would rather stay at home and play with their phones. If they aren’t spending time with their friends, they aren’t interested in that“cool”license, according to the Chicago Tribune.

It is hard to say growing up more slowly is good or bad. But kids should have more time for social and emotional(情感的) development. It is necessary for achieving success later in their life.

    1.Now in America.

    A. fewer teens are doing “adult”activities

    B. most teens spend too much time on homework

    C. teens hate to do other things except part-time jobs

    D. teens pay more attention to driver's licenses

2.Jean Twenge thinks American teenagers are growing up slowly because .

    A. they have too much homework to do

    B. they spend too much time at school

    C. playing with tecnology takes up most of kid’s time.

    D. kids are more interested in “adult” activities

3.According to the Chicago Tribune, why are kids spending less time with their friends?

    A. Because they don’t want to play with their friends.

    B. Because they think that playing with friends is not cool.

    C. Because they need more time to focus on their schoolwork.

    D. Because they would rather spend time on their phones.

    4.What's the text mainly about?

    A. What American teens’ worries are.

    B. Why American teens grow up slowly.

    C. What American teens think of growing up.

    D. Why social media and smartphones are important.
