  2. You don’t have to be a superhero to help the environment. Even small, simple actions can add up to big change. People around the world will celebrate Earth Day on April 22. But anyone – including kids – can work to help the earth at any time. TFK (Time for Kids) talked to a few kids about how they are protecting the planet. Let them inspire you!

Mari, 10, lives in Flint, Michigan, where people have been without clean drinking water since 2014. That is when the water became polluted with lead(铅). Children in Flint have suffered from health problems due to lead poisoning. Mari has worked hard to spread awareness of Flint’s water crisis by organizing fundraisers and other events.

At age 3, Ryan went with his dad to recycling center near his home, in Orange County, California. The next day, Ryan began collecting recyclables from neighbors. Soon, Ryan’s Recycling Company was born. “Recycling keeps bottles and cans out of the ocean,” Ryan, now 8, told TFK, “so animals don’t get sick from them and die.” So far, Ryan has helped customers recycle 320,000 bottles and cans. He has also donated nearly $6,000 to the Pacific Marine Mammal Center.

Joris, 11, has always loved cheetahs. When he learned that the big cats might disappear in his lifetime, he set out to help protect them. Joris began raising money. 3. China is known for its long history, rich culture, and cute pandas. It’s also known for some of the worst air quality in the world. But the Asian country is now using a natural weapon against air pollution – trees.

In February, China’s government announced plans to cover at least 32,400 square miles with forest. That is about the size of Ireland. Some 60,000 soldiers will take charge of the tree-planting program. Most of the trees will be planted in Hebei Province. That is an area surrounding China’s capital, Beijing.

Huang Wei is an environmentalist who works for Greenpeace East Asia. She is optimistic about the plan. “Trees act as a sink to absorb carbon dioxide and other pollutants,” she said. Carbon dioxide is a gas that traps the Earth’s heat. It contributes to global warming.

Why is China’s air filled with harmful chemicals? It’s because the country relies on coal-fired power plants. When coal is burned, PM2.5 is produced, PM2.5 is a pollutant. It can cause shortness of breath, heart attacks, and even death.

Just two years ago, pollution levels were so high in Beijing that schools and factories had to close. Huang hopes China’s tree-planting plan will reduce the nation’s suffering from air pollution.

The Chinese government is getting help from others in its drive to make the nation greener. Stefano Boeri is an Italian architect and urban planner. He is leading an effort to plant vertical(垂直的)forests in China.

Boeri’s designs have already taken root in the city of Nanjing, China. That’s where the Nanjing Green Towers are under construction. The building has two towers. Thousands of trees and hanging plants will grow on the balconies and rooftops.

Boeri says his goal is to design buildings that help the environment and improve air quality. He also hopes to encourage a new generation of green architects.

1.What’s China’s solution to the air pollution problem?

    A. Closing the factories. B. Planting more tress.

    C. Using natural gas. D. Making more rules.

2.What’s the Huang Wei’s attitude to the new plan?

    A. Puzzled. B. Confident.

    C. Uncertain. D. Unconcerned.

3.Which of the following can best replace the phrase “contributes to” in paragraph 3?

    A. leads to B. attaches to

    C. gets close to D. looks forward to

4.What’s special about Boeri’s building design in China?

    A. It is environmentally friendly.

    B. It is based on classical buildings.

    C. It often features two towers.

    D. It aims to save public space.

  4. Plastic is easy, convenient, cheap and long-lasting, but it does great harm to the environment.

Since plastic entered mass production, 8 billion tons have been produced – and we aren’t very good at recycling. By 2015, 6,945 tons of plastic waste had formed, with around 9 percent of it getting recycled. About 79 percent of it ends up in landfills or around the environment, including the ocean. We may end up drowning in plastic before long.

Chemists at Colorado State University have found a polymer(聚酯)that has many of the qualities of plastics – it’s light, strong, durable and heat-resistant – but that can be changed back to its original small-molecule(分子)state for complete recycling. Even after being recycled, the polymer can be turned back into its plastic-like state, and this can be done quickly and cheaply.

This new polymer has all the good qualities of plastics, yet it is relatively easy to make and to recycle. Making it requires room temperature conditions, a short reaction time to bond the monomer(单体)into polymers and only a small amount of the catalyst(催化剂)remains in the end product. It has a high molecular weight, stands up to heat and generally behaves like plastic. Recycling it requires similarly little effort. Mild lab conditions are required and so is a catalyst. Once applied, the polymers are once again monomers in a matter of minutes and can be used to create another product.

But don’t get too excited about this just yet. Scientists stressed that the polymer isn’t ready for mass products just yet. There’s still plenty of development to do, including making it more economical to produce and recycle.

1.What can we infer from the second paragraph?

    A. It is impossible to recycle old plastics.

    B. 79 percent of plastics has been recycled.

    C. Small quantities of plastics get recycled.

    D. Landfills aren’t enough to handle plastics.

2.What aspect of the new polymer is the third paragraph mainly about?

    A. Its purposes. B. Its qualities.

    C. Its structures. D. Its applications.

3.What conditions are needed when making the new polymer?

    A. Mild temperature. B. Cold temperature.

    C. Body temperature. D. Room temperature.

    4.The new polymer isn’t mass-produced probably because ________.

    A. it is not very cheap B. it seems too light

    C. it is hard to recycle D. it can’t stand cold
