  2. More than a decade after they first met on Mount Bamian in western Hunan province, a photographer from Shenzhen, has kept his promise of finding funding for a young woman whose arms were amputated(截肢) as a child.

Chen Yongheng has taken about 5,000 photos of Xiang Liping, who he first met when she was 13 in December 2002. She appeared on a hillside as he was coming down the mountain, followed by two other children, carrying large bundles(捆) of straw on their backs. Intrigued by the sight, Chen raised his camera to take a picture of the three — but it was then that he noticed the sleeves of the girl in red blowing in the wind. He approached and touched the girl's sleeves, only to discover there were no arms inside.

After returning home and reviewing his photographs, Chen decided he had to find the girl again. Chen finally found the girl one year later. 3. The new two-child policy is making job hunting more difficult for women when about 40 percent of them said they were asked whether they planned to have a second child during job interviews, according to a report in Chongqing.

China dropped its decades-long one-child policy in October and allowed each family to have two children. The country now has about 270 million married women of childbearing age.

This change has put millions of career women in a dilemma between family and career. Employers also face big challenges as more female workers will have two childbearing leaves, seven to eight months altogether.

A human resources website www.job.cq.qq.com conducted a survey among 500 employers and 5,000 job seekers about how the two-child policy affects the job market.

Though two thirds of employers said the policy would make no difference to their recruitment(招聘), the survey showed that more than 70 percent of job seekers believe that bearing a second child will make women less popular in the job market. Forty percent of employers said they will give priority to married women with two children, according to the survey.

Lin Xia, 29, quit her job after giving birth to her first child. She is now preparing to return to work. After several inquiries at a job fair, she found that the employers are concerned about future birth plans. "I thought it would be easier to find a job after giving birth," she was quoted as saying by the website. "I had to answer whether I will have a second child before I could get a chance for a job interview."

Liang Siqi, 23, a college graduate, said although employers did not ask her the child question yet, she will not plan to have two children. "It (having two children) will definitely affect my career and personal life, so I will have only one," she said.

Zhou Jiansong, who is in charge of human resources at a large private high-tech group in Chongqing, said the company will discuss birth issues with interviewees in order to make a better work plans. "We fully respect a women's right to bear a child or two," he said. "But you don't want them to go on a childbearing leave soon after they join your company." The experts expect more labor dispute cases concerning childbearing leave rights when bearing a second child in future.

1.As for the influence of the new policy on working women, which of the following is TRUE?

    A. They will find it more difficult to ask for a leave in a company.

    B. Most of them will be forced to choose to have two children.

    C. Many of them will stay at home instead of working outside.

    D. Those who have two children may find it easier to get a job.

2.In the opinion of Zhou Jiansong, what will employers probably do when interviewing women interviewees?

    A. They will pay no attention to women’s right to have a child or two.

    B. They will let women interviewees make a future plan.

    C. They may hope to know more about women interviewees’ childbearing plan.

    D. They may expect more labor debate cases about interviewees’ second-child plan.

3.What can we infer from the report in the passage?

    A. All the women surveyed in the passage are married.

    B. The women bearing a second child get the same chance as before to get a job.

    C. About 70 percent of the women were asked whether they planned to have a second child.

    D. Bearing a second child affects the women’s career to some degree.

4.What is the writer’s attitude towards the new two-child policy?

    A. Positive.        B. Neutral.        C. Indifferent.        D. Critical.

  4. We are often unable to pay close attention to what we hear. Just like when we try to grab a sponge(海绵) that is full of water, some water will run out of it. But sometimes we try to remember everything a speaker says and try to take in a speaker’s every word as if every word was equally important. We try to remember all the names, all the dates, and all the places. In the process we often miss the speaker’s main point.

Erik Waldman works at a design company. Knowing he had never been good at budgeting his money, he was determined to begin thinking about his economic future. When his employer circulated an e-mail announcing a financial planning workshop(研讨会), Erik signed up right away.

The first session was about retirement planning. Simone Fisher, the lecturer, explained that 7 of 10 Americans between the ages of 22 and 35 do not have a regular savings plan. Erik wrote down every number Simone mentioned.

"If you want to have a retirement income equal to 75 percent of your current salary," Simone continued, "you will need to save at least of 6 percent of your present earnings, taking into account future inflation rates(通货膨胀率). In the meantime, I want to stress that the most important thing is to start saving now."

Erik recorded all the statistics Simone used. When she opened the floor(自由发言) for question, Erik raised his hand and said, "I have two question. When is the best time to start saving for retirement? And how can I figure out my savings target if I don’t know what inflation rates will be in the future?"

This is a typical example of losing the speaker’s point by concentrating on details. Erik had fixed his mind on remembering all the statistics in Simone’s presentation, but he blocked out the man message. Rather than trying to remember everything, we should concentrate on main ideas and evidence.

1.What does the author mean by saying "Just like when we ... run out of it."?

    A. We tend to reject what others say.

    B. We always try to remember all details.

    C. It is difficult for us to remember all things.

    D. We often fail to focus on what we are listening to.

    2.During the workshop, Erik .

    A. got Simone Fisher 's main idea

    B. focused on the lecture's details

    C. showed little interest in the lecture

    D. didn't agree with what Simone had said

3.When hearing Erik's questions, Simone would most probably think .

    A. they are very good questions

    B. Erik was an excellent listener

    C. it was hard to answer the questions

    D. his questions were meaningless

4.The passage is written to help those who want to be .

    A. a good listener B. a financial planner

    C. an excellent lecturer D. a successful employee
