  2. When one California construction worker, Colin Blevin arrived at work at around 7 a.m. on Monday morning, he noticed a car was blocking the entrance-way to the construction site. While asking the driver to move, Colin spotted a baby in a car seat. “He moved the car and I pulled in,” Blevin said. “The back door was cracked open and I saw a baby.”

Blevin had no idea that earlier that morning, a car with a 1-year-old had been stolen about 90 miles away while the baby’s father ran inside to order his lunch. “I didn’t know what was going on. I didn’t know initially the baby was in danger and there was an AMBER Alert(警报),” Blevin said.

Even though everything appeared pretty normal, Blevin’s instincts told him something was wrong. After parking his car, a local woman walked over and confirmed his suspicions. The lady told him quietly, “Help me save this baby.” She said, “You have to save this baby. The guy tried to give it to me.” He looked into the car and there was a beautiful chunky baby looking at him. The baby was calm, clean, with a bottle on his chest.

Blevin met the man, 44-year-old Raymond Randy Gutierrez, and asked whose baby was in the car. “He said a lady gave him the car and left the baby in the car,” Blevin said. “And right away I thought that makes no sense. The baby was well taken care of and this guy was dirty, skinny and nervous.” Blevin grabbed the baby from the car and Gutierrez ran away when he called 911. Police caught Gutierrez later that day and were able to reunite the baby with his parents.

1.How did Gutierrez get the car?

A.A father left it to him. B.He stole it.

C.A lady gave it to him. D.He bought it.

2.What can the underlined word “instinct” in Paragraph 3 be replaced by?

    A.companion B.natural ability

    C.colleague D.text message

3.What did Gutierrez decide to do with the baby?

A.To sell it to a father. B.To take care of it himself.

C.To abandon it in the car. D.To leave it to others.

4.What made Blevin suspect the baby didn’t belong to Gutierrez?

    A.The expression of the man.

B.The appearance of the baby and the man.

C.The time when he found the baby.

D.The place where the car parked.

  3. Tuition and fees for a four-year private college averaged $35,830 in 2018-19; at four-year, in-state public colleges, it was $10,230, according to the College Board. And that’s not even adding in room and board or other expenses.

By the end of last year, the amount families actually paid was $26,458, on average, according to Sallie Mae’s 11th annual “How America Pays for College” report. That’s up from $23,757 in the year earlier.

Income and savings from parents and students combined covered nearly half, or 47 percent of that amount in 2017-2018, up from 44 percent the year earlier, the education lender found. “Some families do pay 100 percent out of pocket while some others do get a full ride, which means their children gain a full scholarship,” said Marie O’Malley, the senior director of consumer research at Sallie Mae. “Typically, though, people rely on a number of different resources to pull it together.”

Scholarships, in fact, were the single most-used resource to pay for an undergraduate’s college bill. The share of college costs covered by scholarships and grants - money that does not have to be paid back - accounted for 28 percent of the total expense. The average total award among those who used one or more scholarships was $7,760, Sallie Mae said. Of course, many families also borrow to pay for school. Borrowed money, or loans, covered nearly a quarter, or 24 percent of the bill, down from 27 percent the year before. Contributions from grandparents or other relatives or friends paid for the remainder.

The report surveyed about 800 parents of children aged 18-24 enrolled as undergraduate students and nearly 800 undergraduate students aged 18-24 online.

1.How much did the typical American family pay last year for college on average?

    A.$35,830 B.$10,230 C.$26,458 D.$23,757

2.Which of the following best explains “out of pocket” underlined in paragraph 3?

A.borrowing from others B.at their own expense

C.free of charge D.with nothing rewarded

3.What kind of American college tuition has decreased in percentage compared with the year earlier?

    A.loans B.savings

    C.scholarships D.parents’ income

4.What contributes to the most part of the college expenses except the income and savings?

    A.borrowed money B.money from relatives

    C.money from banks D.scholarships

  4. Actors Keira Knightley and Kristen Bell have both commented on their worries about using Disney princesses as role models for their children.

On a famous talk show, Knightley said her daughter (who was born in 2015) was “banned” from watching Cinderella, which Disney produced as a cartoon in 1950 and a live-action film in 2015. “Cinderella waits around for a rich guy to rescue her. Don’t. Rescue yourself! Obviously.”

Knightley added that she had also forbidden The Little Mermaid, the 1989 cartoon. “This is the one that I’m quite annoyed about because I really like the film. I mean, the songs are great, but do not give up your voice for a man. Well, that’s a little difficult to handle, but I’m keeping to it.”

Bell, the star of Frozen, expressed her disapproval of the Snow White fairy tale, which became a classic Disney cartoon in 1938. In an interview with parents, Bell said: “I look at my girls and ask, ‘Don’t you think it’s very unusual that Snow White didn’t ask the old witch why she needed to eat the apple? Or where she got that apple?’ I say, ‘I would never take food from a stranger, would you?’ And my kids respond, ‘No!’ And I think I’m doing something right.”

Bell, who played a Disney princess in Frozen, said she also used the story to illustrate issues about permission. She says that she asked her children: “Don’t you think that it’s very strange that the prince kisses Snow White without her permission? … Because you cannot kiss someone if they’re sleeping!”

Bell later responded to criticism on social media. To one user she wrote: “Everything is a message to our children, because they are sponges(海绵) that soak up everything and are learning how to be adults through what they see. I want my girls to see and practice critical thinking and respectful behavior.”

1.Why did Knightley stop her daughter from watching The Little Mermaid?

    A.Because Knightley disliked it.

B.Because the little mermaid was tricky.

C.Because the film showed wrong values.

D.Because the songs in the film were annoying.

2.What can we infer about Bell from Paragraph 4?

A.Bell thought Snow White behaved well.

B.Bell didn’t know how to persuade her kids.

C.Bell wanted her kids to learn from Snow White.

D.Bell believed her kids should be critical about the film.

3.What qualities do Knightley and Bell expect their children to have?

    A.Curious and hard-working. B.Smart and generous.

    C.Independent and good-mannered. D.Critical and proud.

4.What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.Say No to Disney Princesses

    B.Rescue Yourselves

    C.Doing Something Right

    D.Practice Critical Thinking
