  1. Read the following three posts from the website, ifonly.com, and answer the questions that follow.

    CJ, 31, social worker

I wish I had given the plain-looking guys a second chance while I was at school. I always went for handsome, athletic types. So, where am I today? Married to a good-looking fool. A handsome man who has no heart, no sympathy, and no love for anyone but himself. I sometimes visit my family back in my hometown and occasionally I run into old classmates --- the plain-looking guys. And what do I see now? Very intelligent, warm, funny men who are everything I want, but will never have in a husband.

    Mia, 22, photographer

When I was at school I played in most of the school sports teams. I remember one year our football team had to win the last game to get into the finals. Three minutes of the game left and we needed to score. I got control of the ball and ran towards the goal. Our captain was right next to me shouting “go on, take a shot”. But I panicked and passed the ball to her. She shot and missed. If only I hadn’t passed the ball. I knew immediately that if I had taken the shot I would have scored. Ever since that game I’ve always taken every opportunity I could.

If I had listened to them, I might have made some better decisions in my life. I would have gone to university and probably waited a bit before I got married. I hope my daughters will listen to me more than I listened to my parents.

  2. Good health is the most valuable thing a person can have, but one cannot take good health for granted. It is important to remember that the body needs proper care in order to be healthy. There are three things that a person can do to help stay in good shape: eat right food, get enough sleep, and exercise regularly.

Proper nutrition is important for good health. Your body cannot work well unless it receives the proper kind of “fuel”. Don't eat too much food with lots of sugar and fat. Eat plenty of foods high in protein (蛋白质) , like meat, fish, eggs and nuts. Vegetables and fruits are very important because they provide necessary vitamins and minerals. However, don't overeat. It is not helpful to be overweight.

Getting the proper amount of sleep is also important. If you don't get enough sleep, you feel tired and easily get angry. You have no energy. Over a long period of time a little amount of sleep may even result in a change of personality. Be sure to allow yourself from seven to nine hours of sleep each night. If you do, your body will feel strong and refreshed, and your mind will be sharp.

Finally, get plenty of exercise. Exercise firms the body, strengthens the muscles, and prevents you from gaining weight. It also improves your heart and lungs. If you follow a regular exercise program, you will probably increase your life-span (寿命).Any kind of exercise is good. Most sports are excellent for keeping the body in good shapes: basketball, swimming, bicycling, running and so on are good examples. Sports are not only good for your body, but they are enjoyable and interesting, too.

If everybody were to eat the right foods, get plenty of sleep and exercise regularly, the world would be a happier and healthier place. We would all live to be much older and wiser.

    1.According to the passage,_________.

A.if we were healthy, we could spend our days in doing things with less sleep

B.one can eat a lot to stay in good shape

C.one needn't take any exercise if he is healthy

  3. Paulie received a remote control car, some clothes, and a collection of action figures for his birthday. But what he really wanted was this video game he had been asking for. Only Granddad’s present was to come, so, with two fingers on each hand crossed tightly, he hoped.

“Here you go you little whippersnapper.”

“Thanks,” said Paulie, ripping the wrapping clean off the present.

His face dropped; all he got was a drawing pad, and an old, used, wooden pencil.

“Now that there is a magic pencil,” said Granddad.

    Paulie looked sceptical.

“It brings imagination to life,” said Granddad, prodding(戳一下)his nose secretly.

Later that night, Paulie was sent to bed. But he couldn’t sleep. He wished he had his game to play, but he didn’t. So he got up, took out his pad and “magic” pencil, and started to draw.

Paulie drew a monster. He then drew a castle for the monster to attack, and he added a princess, as they are always in castles. Paulie figured the monster wanted to eat the princess as her dress made her look like a birthday cake.

Then he drew a knight(骑士), as knights always rescue princesses.

Then something magical happened. Paulie was sucked into this paper world.

Paulie now stood looking down at the castle. A knight was charging at him. So, with his mighty(有劲儿的)arm, he hit the knight right hard out of the picture. Then he ate the princess.

Paulie soon found himself back in his bedroom. He looked at the paper; on it was a drawing of the monster. It was licking(舔)its finger, with a big smile. Paulie smiled back.

Paulie didn’t want his game anymore. He realised this short but thick pencil and paper could take him anywhere.
