  1. David walked down the street. All he wanted to do was to play basketball with Jim. But his mother told him to return his sister's books to the library on his way to Jim's house.

In his eyes, books and summertime just don't go together. He thought he had read a lot during the school year. And he had never set foot inside a public library. Today he'd just drop the books off in the outside return box, but it was locked. He had to go inside to return them.

David walked inside the building a few minutes before closing time. He put the books into the return box. After a quick drink of water and a short stop in the toilet, he'd be on his way to meet Jim. He walked out of the toilet. The library lights were turned off. He was locked—in a library!

David tried to use the telephone, but he couldn't find one. As the sun began to set, he searched for a light and found a little one on a desk. He used a pencil to write a note on a big piece of paper. It read, “I'm locked inside. Please call for help.” He put it on the front door. Surely, someone passing by would see it. He then turned his attention to the library itself.

He was surprised to discover that this place was not so bad. Rows and rows of books! When he saw a book about Michael Jordan on the desk, he picked it up. He opened the book and began to read. He felt that being locked in the library didn't seem to be such a terrible thing.

  3. The Great Fire of London started in the very early hours of 2 September 1666. In four days it destroyed more than three- quarters of the old city, where most of the houses were wooden and close together. One hundred people became homeless but only a few lost their lives.

The fire started on Sunday morning in the house of the King’s baker (面包师) in Pudding Lane. The baker, with his wife and family, was able to get out through a window in the roof. A strong wind blew the fire from the bakery (面包房) into a small hotel next door. Then it spread quickly into Thames Street. That was the beginning.

By eight o’clock three hundred houses were on fire. On Monday nearly a kilometer of the city was burning along the River Thames. Tuesday was the worst day. The fire destroyed many well-known buildings, old St Paul’s and the Guildhall among them.

Samuel Pepys, the famous writer, wrote about the fire People threw their things into the river. Many poor people stayed in their houses until the last moment. Birds fell out of the air because of the heat.

The fire stopped only when the King finally ordered people to destroy hundreds of buildings in the direction of the fire. With nothing left to burn, the fire became weak and finally died out.

After the fire, Christopher Wren, the architect (建筑师), wanted a city with wider streets and fine new houses of stone. In fact, the streets are still narrow, but he did build more than fifty churches, among them the mew St Paul’s.

  1. This week, our topic is pollution. What’s the answer to all of our pollution problems? We asked two experts to give their views.

Forest Smith is a member of Green First, an environmental group:

Our future on Earth looks terrible. We’re filling our country with waste. We can’t breathe the air and the sea is polluted too.

I visited some relatives recently in a small village. They grow their own food and cycle everywhere. They are not rich, but they are happy and healthy. We have too many possessions. Most of us have more things that we would ever need. It’s such a waste!

We must close down most of our factories that would reduce rubbish and the air pollution. We must recycle more, give up all cars and improve public transport. Another big problem is that we live in big cities that are crowded with people. It’s time for us to give up our big cities and factories and go back to a simple way of life.

John Green is a scientist at a university:

“Things are not as bad as Forest says. We all have a bright future. We don’t need to give up cars, but we do need to invent better, cleaner cars that do not pollute the environment. Traffic will still be bad, so we need better public transport. We should also recycle more. But some things are getting better. My sister returned last month after living abroad for five years. She said, “Our city looks different from before—it is cleaner and greener now.

Science has made life better in so many ways. A hundred years ago, most people died before the age of fifty because life was so hard. We can’t go back to a world like that.”

    1.What’s Green First?

2.Why do Forest Smith’s relatives grow their own food?

3.who thinks we should invent cleaner cars?

4.Why does Forest Smith suggest closing down most of our factories?

5.What do both experts think we should do to deal with pollution problems?

  2. “Kids can make a difference,” Craig Kielburger said. When Craig was 12, he started a group that has helped kids all over the world.

How did Craig get started? In the seventh grade he learned something that made him angry. A 6-year-old boy in Pakistan was sent to work in a factory. The boy could not go to school. He could not even play. He had no freedom (自由) at all.

Craig compared that with his own life. Laws in his country said that kids must go to school. Education was free to all kids. But in some countries school was not free. Children from poor families went to work instead of to school.

Craig wanted to help those who didn’t have the same advantages as he and his friends. As a result, Craig and some friends started Free The Children.

Craig and his friends decided that Free The Children should raise money to build schools. Craig hoped that learning would help kids in poverty (贫困) live better.

Today, Craig’s charity has more than one million members in 45 countries. It is still going strong. The money they have raised has done many good things. It has help more than 500 schools around the world. It also pays for health care in poor communities.

Craig has had a lot of success. However, he still remembers his unpleasant start seventh grade.

“We were laughed at by other kids, who said you couldn’t change things,” he says. Still Craig didn’t give up. Now he wants more kids to help. “Go to freethechildren.com. Bring it to your teachers,” he says. “As you gain more confidence, friends will join you. It just gets easier.”

1.How old was Craig when he started a group that has helped kids all over the world?

2.In which country did the writer mention that a six-year-old boy had to work in a factory?

3.What is the name of the group created by Craig and his friends?

4.How many schools has Craig’s charity helped build?

5.Why did other kids laugh at Craig and his friends when they tried to start the group?
