  1. Kid Heroes for the Planet

Earth Day is April 22. On this day, people around the world focus on environmental problems. But you don’t have to wait for Earth Day to take action. You can improve our planet every day of the year. Read their stories, and let them inspire you.

Isabel and Melati Wilsen were 10 and 12 when they learned about Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King J. These change—makers in spired the sisters to think about how they could make a difference in the world. They decided to focus on the plastic pollution affecting Bali, Indonesia, where they live. “Growing up out he island of Ball, we already had a strong connection to the environment,” Melati said. Melati and Isabel created Bye Bye Plastic Bags in 2013. The group’s primary goal was to have single—use plastic shopping bags banned (禁止) across Bali. It succeeded. Bali’s government introduced a law banning the bags beginning in 2019. Melati hopes more kids will be inspired to speak up. “You have a voice, so use it.” she says.

When he was 12, Marcus Deans saw a photograph of a child in Africa drinking dirty water. “I was shocked that this still happens in the world,: he said. Since then, he has been working on a filter (过滤装置) that clears contaminants, such as bacteria out of the water, so people can safely drink it. He called the filter NOGOS. Unlike expensive filters, a NOGOS filter costs just $2 to make. It’s made of sugar, sand, and seashells. Now 17, Marcus is in his final year of high school, in Ontario, Canada. He’s still working hard at perfecting NOGOS, and he plans to have it manufactured and sent to communities that need it. Getting to this point has not been easy. “There were moments when I wanted to give up and walk away from this project,” Marcus says. “But what kept me going is that I wanted to find a solution for people who need clean water.”

Bria Neff, a 12—year—old from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is on a mission (任务) to help endangered species. The mission began four years ago, when she was 8. That’s when Bria started painting portraits of animals. She set up an activity, Faces of the Endangered, as a way to sell her paintings. She gives away the money she raises to organizations that care for threatened animals and ecosystems. So far, Bria has painted more than 250 pictures and gave away $36,000. Bria has also designed two coloring books that feature animals. The books are sold at the Great Plains Zoo, in her hometown. Money from the sale of these books helps fund the protection of endangered species represented at the zoo. What’s Bria’s message for kids who want to make a difference? “No matter how old you are, you can change the world,” she says. “No idea is too small.”

  1. Enjoy for life or the twitter?

Recently, twittering has been a so popular tool for us to share everything we experienced online.

Whatever you do, wherever you go or whoever you are, twittering is always the first space you seem to go into and share you joy. 1. Or do we just do them for twittering to get others’ attention?

As far as I am concerned, most of people just twitter everything to get other’s attention. 2. Several days ago, one of my friends invited me to have dinner with her in a newly opened restaurant. It’s so hard to get a reservation so the minute we sat at the table, we couldn’t wait to order all the specials here. Soon our dinner was ready. 3. The reason is that she needed to take a photo of each dish and post it. After about five minutes, I was finally allowed to eat. But some of the dishes had become cold and lost its original flavors. That’s just one of my embarrassing experiences caused by twittering. 4.

Besides, twitter is a just way to help us enjoy the life better but not a way to make up our life. 5. They try to post all the good sides of a matter, leading others to ignore the hidden things. As a result, people need to know how to tell the differences between the truth and lies.

In a word, with the development of high technology, more and more social networks will come out and influence our lives. The most important thing is to learn to use them to better our life.

A.Therefore, we should enjoy for life but not the twitter.

B.Some doubt if twitter is a good way to enjoy life.

C.So, do we have various activities for the fun of life?

D.In this way they will lose the chance to enjoy the beauty that awaits them.

E.Lots of people right now are making use of the twitter to post something unreal.

  1. How much do you know about Chicago, lllinois, in the United States? You might think it’s a big city. And it is Chicago is actually the third most populous city in the US, right after New York City and Los Angeles according to the US 2010 Census. “The Windy City” is Chicago’s most famous nickname (绰号). It is for good reason. The city lies right next to Lake Michigan and heavy gusts (一阵风) of wind blow through the city.

Chicago is very well known for its art and culture. In fact, TripAdvisor says that the Art Institute of Chicago is the No. 1 place to visit in the city. It is not only a school, but also a world—class art museum.

If you don’t feel like visiting a museum, your best choice is to go to Millennium Park. This is one of my personal favorites. This park holds the famous Cloud Gate, and it looks kind of like a big reflective (反光的) bean. Many people enjoy taking photos in its reflection.

Chicago also offers other fun things to do. If you enjoy heights, go visit the famous Willis Tower! You can go up to the top of it and step out onto a glass box. You’ll be standing over the city, but don’t worry — it’s completely safe. Doesn’t Chicago sound like a fun city?

1.回答问题If you have one day off in Chicago, what will you do for fun? Why?

    2.找出划线单词“it”所指代的内容。

3.从文中找出与“The population of Chicago is just smaller than New York and Los Angeles in the US.”意思相同或相近的句子。

  2. In the early 1960s, black people and white people in the US could not attend the same schools, sit next to each other on buses, or even use the same water fountains (自来水饮水器).

Those laws no longer exist, thanks to the civil rights movement (民权运动). People stood up and asked for a change in the laws.

On Aug 28, 1963, the civil rights movement reached its height with a march (游行) in Washington, D.C. It attracted around 250,000 people to the Lincoln Memorial (林肯纪念堂). At the march, Martin Luther King J. made his famous I Have a Dream speech. In it, he said: “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content (内容) of their character.” Those words remain famous to this day.

After the march, King and other civil rights leaders met with US President John F. Kennedy and vice—president Lyndon B. Johnson at the White House.

In 1964, following the assassination (刺杀) of Kennedy, president Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act into law. The law gave all Americans equal rights in working, voting (选举) and the use of public facilities (设施).

Since the march in Washington, 50 years has passed. Much progress has been made. Barack Obama became the first African—American president in 2009, and his second term ended in 2016. But there is still work to be done.
