阅读单选 共 5 题
  1. For the most part of my life, I have lived in a small town in northern Arizona. As I got older, it seemed as if my town got smaller.

All things I could see in the town were bad. It looked ugly, small and was filled with terrible people. I wanted to be in new places with bigger chances and to meet new people. That was exactly what I did. I moved to the city of Phoenix to go to college and worked hard to achieve what I had dreamed of.

For the first year when I was away from home, I wanted to stay away and never go back. When people were taking a trip to my hometown, I would always question “Why would you like to do that? It’s so ugly.” All I had towards my hometown was negative feelings.

However, after being away for about three years, my perspective has completely changed. I have nothing but love for my hometown — its beauty, and the sentimental value (感情价值) that it holds.

After all, it’s where I’m from. Yes, there are bad things, but there are also some good ones: Dad raced the train on the way to school; Mum let us stop for ice cream every Friday after school to celebrate the end of the week; I walked around downtown with friends in high school, thinking we were cool.

It might take being away from something for you to truly appreciate it. It’s true when people say that distance makes the heart grow fonder(温柔的). Now I visit my hometown every chance I get. Even if I am no longer living there, it will always hold a piece of my heart.

  2. We all know that zebras have stripes (条纹). However, both animal experts and zebra fans all over the world haven’t known the reason for centuries. But now it appears that some researchers in California may have finally solved the age-old mystery!

In order to find the reason why zebras have stripes, a team of scientists led by Professor Tim Caro set to work. They began by comparing the thickness, location, and the stripes on seven species of zebras that live in various geographic locations. They then examined some factors that may continuously affect zebras, such as their natural enemies, the temperatures of their living places and the small insects around them like flies. To their amazement, the only factor that was linked with the stripes was the annoying flies. The zebras with the most obvious and the largest number of stripes mostly live in areas with more flies.

But that led to another question: why are zebras the only kind of animal smart enough to develop the stripes? After all, there are plenty of other animals like horses and donkeys, which are facing the same trouble. Upon closer examination of the black and white animals, the researchers noticed that unlike the others, zebras have very short coats of hair, making them particularly easy to be bitten (咬) by the flies!

While Tim says that this mystery is finally solved, it has given rise to a new one. Why are these fearless flies that have no fears of attacking animals that are thousands of times bigger, afraid of black and white stripes? If you have any answer, be sure to add it to the comments below. It may help the professor with his new research!

  4. “Feel bored staying at home? So does the virus. If you stay longer, the virus will be bored to death.” This is how Zhang Wenhong asked people to stay indoors during the outbreak. Zhang is head of the infectious diseases department (感染科) at Huashan Hospital Affiliated with Fudan University in Shanghai. He also works as head of the Shanghai expert team that treats novel coronavirus pneumonia(新冠肺炎). These days, Zhang has become an internet celebrity (网红) due to his funny and frank way of talking.

He first caught people’s attention in late January, when he asked the members of the Communist Party of China ( 共产党员) in his department to go to the frontline hospitals. His reason was simple: They have “vowed (宣誓) to put people’s interests first.” His straightforward way of speaking quickly won applause across the country. Meanwhile, as a Party member himself, Zhang set an example by checking on pneumonia patients every day. “I do it in person because I need to encourage other colleagues (同事),” he told the media.

Zhang believes in the traditional Chinese idea that “the best doctors prevent the disease (上 医治未病)”. That’s why he tries his best to spread scientific knowledge on how to prevent the epidemic. His sense of humor has made it easier for the knowledge to reach the public. He and his team also update their WeChat account every day with timely analyses of the epidemic to drive away public worries. One of his articles got more than 10 million hits.

But Zhang might not care about his sudden fame. When asked about his feelings after becoming famous, Zhang told the media, “Don’t pay attention to me. Pay attention to Wuhan. I’m not a celebrity. I’m a doctor.”

  5. Antarctica(南极洲) is known for being a vast land of ice and snow, a place too cold for most life. Despite (尽管) this, the continent is slowly starting to turn warm. According to the Guardian, the Antarctic has registered (登记) a new high temperature for the first time on record, prompting fears of climate instability(不稳定性) in the world’s iciest place.

On Feb 9, Brazilian researchers at Seymour Island reported a temperature of 20.75℃ on the icy continent of Antarctica. It was almost a full degree higher than the previous record of 19.8℃, taken on Signy Island in January 1982.

This record-breaking reading was taken at a monitoring (监测) station in the northern part of Antarctica. According to Brazilian soil scientist Carlos Schaefer, the temperature was documented during a 20-year-long research project. The focus of this project is to study the effect that climate change has on the permafrost (永久冻土) within the region. Permafrost is soil that stays frozen for at least two years. Although this is a first record high for Antarctica, Schaefer stressed that “We can’t use this to anticipate (预测) climatic changes in the future. It’s simply a signal that something different is happening in that area.”

But in fact, the last high temperature reading was in the 19℃ range. These higher temperatures can cause ice and glaciers (冰川) in Antarctic regions to melt. The Antarctic peninsula (半岛) —the long finger of land(狭长地带) that stretches towards Argentina(阿根廷)—is most dramatically affected. Scientists saw glaciers that have retreated by more than 100 meters in Discovery Bay where the snow melted in little more than a week, leaving dark exposed rock. This melted ice leads to a rise in sea levels that can threaten the safety of coastal areas. It’s believed to be behind an alarming decline of more than 50 percent in chinstrap penguin (帽带企鹅) colonies, which are dependent on sea ice.

Like American writer Ernest Hemingway once said, “The Earth is a fine place and worth fighting for.” We should do everything we can to help save our planet. Otherwise, it may become too hot for us to fix.

1.What did Brazilian researchers report on Feb 9?

A.Signy Island is the warmest region in the Antarctic.

C.The average temperature of Antarctica ranges from 19.8 C to 20.75℃.

D.Antarctica’s new record temperature is a full degree higher than the previous decade.

2.What’s the main purpose of the 20-year-long research project?

A.To predict possible climatic change in the future.

B.To monitor Antarctica’s contributions to world climate change.

C.To explain why the permafrost may cause glaciers to melt.

D.To examine how the permafrost is influenced by climate change.
