  1. Barbara was driving her six-year-old son, Ben, to his piano lesson. They were late, and Barbara was beginning to think she should have called it off. Barbara, a nurse at the local hospital, was very tired at that moment. The coldest season and the terrible weather just brought them more difficulties.

“Mum!” Ben cried suddenly. “Look!” Just ahead, a car had lost control on the icy road and crashed (猛撞) into a telephone pole. Barbara stopped her car quickly and opened the door. She said to Ben, “Dear, promise me you’ll stay in the car!” “I will, Mum,” Ben said as his mum ran. She was a nurse — she might be able to help the unlucky people.

It was terrible. Two girls aged about 18 were in the car. One was dead and the other was still breathing. Barbara quickly cleaned the wounds in the driver’s head. Ben called for help on his mum’s phone. Soon an ambulance came. “Good job, Barbara, you’ve saved her life,” one doctor said as he examined the driver’s wounds. Barbara walked back to her car with a feeling of sadness, especially for the family of the girl who had died. Later, Barbara was able to meet the family of the driver. 2. What is language for? Some people seem to think it’s for practising grammar rules and learning long lists of words. That’s wrong! Language is for the exchange of ideas and information. It’s meaningless knowing all about a language if you can’t use it freely.

Many students I have met know hundreds of grammar rules, but they can’t speak correctly or fluently. They are afraid of making mistakes. One shouldn’t be afraid of making mistakes when speaking a foreign language. Native speakers make mistakes and break rules, too. Bernard Shaw once wrote, “Foreigners often speak English too correctly.” But the mistakes that native speakers make are different from those that Chinese students make. They’re English mistakes in the English language. And if enough native speakers break a rule, it’s no longer a rule. What used to be wrong becomes right.

People not only make history, but also they make languages. But they can only make their own language. They can’t create another language. So Chinese students should pay attention to the grammar, but they shouldn't overdo it. They should put communication first.

    1.What is language for?

    A. For practising grammar rules. B. For learning lists of words.

    C. For the exchange of ideas and information. D. All above.

2.Generally, when an American or an Englishman speaks English, he ________.

    A. never makes mistakes B. hardly makes mistakes

    C. can’t avoid making mistakes D. always makes mistakes

3.“Foreigners often speak English too correctly.” This sentence means that ________.

    A. foreigners speak correct English

    B. foreigners speak incorrect English

    C. foreigners speak English just following the grammar rules

    D. foreigners never make mistakes when they speak English

4.If too many native speakers break a rule, _______.

    A. what they use will become right B. they are against the law

    C. they should say sorry to others D. they will become heroes

5.What is best title for the passage?

    A. Making languages B. Grammar and Vocabulary

    C. Communication first D. Native speakers’ mistakes

  3. Smart Phone, Poor Sight

Look around and you’ll see people busy on their smart phones. Smart phones do make our lives easier. But have you ever thought about what they mean to your eyes?

According to a study, half of British people own smart phones now and they spend an average of two hours a day using them. There has been a 35% increase in the number of people in the UK who suffer from short-sightedness since smart phones were introduced there in 1997.

Staring (盯) at smart phones screen for long time gives you dry eyes. When looking at something in the distance, your eyes automatically blink (自动眨眼) a certain number of times. However, when you look at things closer to your face, the blinking slows down. This reduces the amount of tears and causes discomfort in your eyes. Another bad habit is using smart phones in dark rooms before going to sleep. If you look at a bright screen while your pupils (瞳孔) become larger, too much light enters your eyes. This can do harm to the eyes and cause a disease called glaucoma (青光眼).

While you’re probably not going to stop using your smart phone, there are a few things you can do to protect your eyes. Hold your phone at least 30 centimeters away from your eyes when using it. Take a break every hour and try the following: look at something at least five meters away from you and then focus on the tip of your nose. Repeat this several times. It should reduce the discomfort in your eyes.

    D. the number of British people who own smart phones increases by 35%

3.Using smart phones improperly may cause ________.

    A. too many blinks B. more tears in the eyes

    C. smaller pupils D. dry eyes and glaucoma

  1. 阅读下面短文,根据短文内容完成句子。

Stonehenge, a rock circle, is not only one of Britain’s most famous historical places, but also one of its greatest mysteries. Stonehenge was built slowly over a long period of time. Most historians believe it must be almost 5,000 years old. Every year it receives more than 750,000 visitors. Especially in June, people go to this place because they want to see the sun rising on the longest day of the year.

For many years historians believed Stonehenge was a temple where ancient leaders tried to communicate with the gods. However, historian Paul Stoker thinks this can’t be true because Stonehenge was built so many centuries ago. “The leaders arrived in England much later,” he points out.

Another popular idea is that Stonehenge might be a kind of calendar (日历). The large stones were put together in a certain way. On midsummer’s morning, the sun shines directly into the center of the stones can prevent illness while keeping people healthy. No one is sure what Stonehenge was used for. But most agree that the position of the stones must be for a special purpose.

1.Stonehenge is one of ________, as well as greatest mysteries in Britain.

2.People go to Stonehenge in June, in order to _________.

3.Historian Paul Stoker thinks Stonehenge can’t be a ________, because the leaders arrived in England much later.
