  2. “Mum, what does it mean when someone tells you that they have a skeleton (骨骼) in the closet (衣橱)?”Jessica asked. “A skeleton in the closet?” her mother paused thoughtfully, “Well, it’s something that you would rather not have anyone else know about. For example, if in the past, someone in Dad’s family had been arrested for stealing a horse, it would be ‘a skeleton in his family’s closet’. He really wouldn’t want any neighbor to know about it.”

“Why pick on my family?” Jessica’s father said with anger. “Your family history isn’t so good, you know. Wasn’t you great – great grandfather a prisoner who was transported to Australia for his crimes?”“Yes, but people these days say that you are not a real Australian unless your ancestors arrived as prisoners.”“Gosh, sorry I asked. I think I understand now,” Jessica cut in before things grew worse.

After dinner, the house was very quiet. Jessica’s parents were still quite angry with each other. Her mother was ironing clothes and every now and then she glared at her husband, who hid behind his newspaper pretending to read. When she finished, she gathered the freshly pressed clothes in her arms and walked to Jessica’s closet. Just as she opened the door and reached in to hang a skirt, a bony arm stuck out from the dark depths and a bundle of white bones fell to the floor. Jessica’s mother sank into a faint (晕倒), waking only when Jessica put a cold, wet cloth on her forehead. She looked up to see the worried faces of her husband and daughter.

“What happened? Where am I?” she asked. “You just destroyed the school’s skeleton, Mum,” explained Jessica. “I brought it home to help me with my health project. I meant to tell you, but it seemed that as soon as I mentioned skeletons and closets, it caused a problem between you and Dad.” Jessica looked in amazement as her parents began to laugh madly. “They’re both crazy,” she thought.

1.According to Jessica’s mother, “a skeleton in the closet” means .

  3. Can you believe everything that you read? It seems as if every day, some new articles come out about a new discovery about this or that. For example, water is bad for you, or good for you. The answer depends on which scientific study has just come out. People cannot decide which food items are healthy, how pyramids were constructed, and why dinosaurs disappeared. When we look for answers we sometimes can believe persuasive researches and scientists. But can we really trust them? Here are two examples of scientific hoaxes (骗局).

As far back as 1726, Johann Beringer was fooled by his fellow scientists into thinking he had made an amazing discovery. The fossils (化石) of spiders, lizards, and even birds with the name of God written on them in Hebrew were unlike anything that had been found before. He wrote several papers on them and was famous for those which was revealed to ruin his reputation by some jealous colleagues.

When an early human being was discovered in 1912, scientists at this time were wild with excitement over the meaning it had for the theory of evolution. There were hundreds of papers about this Piltdown man over the next fifty years until it was finally discovered to be a hoax. The skull (头骨) of a man had been mixed with the jawbone of an orangutan (猩猩) to make the ape (猿) man.

The next time you read the exciting new findings of a study of the best scientist, do not think that it is true at once. Even scientists can get it wrong. While we certainly should not ignore scientific research, we do need to take it with a grain of salt. Just because it is accepted as the truth today does not mean it will still be trustworthy tomorrow.

1.What is the main idea of Paragraph1?

    A. Researchers and scientists are not perfect.

    B. Something that we read may not be true.

    C. Researchers and scientists know everything.

    D. People don’t know whether water is good or bad.

2.What is the reason why Johann Beringer was fooled?

    A. His fellow scientists wanted to make fun of him.

    B. His workmates are eager to become famous, too.

    C. These scientists made a mistake because of carelessness.

    D. His colleagues envied him and did so to destroy his fame.

3.The excited scientists thought that this Piltdown man ______.

    A. was in fact a hoax B. was a great scientific invention

    C. contributed to the theory of evolution D. had the skull like that of an ape

4.What does the underlined phrase “with a grain of salt” in Paragraph 4 mean?

    A. Happily. B. Generally. C. Doubtfully. D. Completely.

5.What can we learn from the passage?

    A. Hebrew is probably a kind of language.

    B. Truths of science will never be out of time.

    C. People believe scientists because they are persuasive.

    D. We are advised to believe famous scientists.

  1. Believe it or not, there are times when you don't agree with your mother or even quarrel with her. Then what should you do?

Stay calm. It is normal that you feel sad and angry after quarrelling with her, but don't go and make big decisions like moving out, or running away from your home because not only will your friends and parents miss you , but it is dangerous for a teenager to do so.

Try to understand your mother. When your mom shouts and screams at you, she is not angry with you but she's disappointed about what you've done. This is because she cares a lot about you and doesn't want you to make bad choices which will do harm to your future. She is just trying to do you good. Remember it is never good to say "Mom I really hate you", because it has a bad effect on your relationship. Don't shout at your mom because she is your mother and she deserves respect from you. If you're angry with her, don't do things that would only make her angry.

Think of ways to get reconciled. After you quarrel with your mother, wait until she cools down a bit and if you dare not to speak face to face with her, find another way to approach her, for example, write a letter to her. By and by, you will find chances to talk to your mother. You should apologize to her first for your bad attitude and then tell her what you are thinking in your mind in a very polite way.
