  1. If you had to pick one, who do you think is greater in terms of their contributions to the Western world: British physicist Isaac Newton or Greek philosopher Aristotle?

Chances are that you’d find it hard to make a decision, at least right away.

But somehow, when it comes to picking a major at college, the decision couldn’t be easier: Science majors – the likes of technology, engineering and math – are the “wiser” choice because they’re considered to be useful, while studying liberal arts majors – language, music and philosophy – is believed to take you nowhere.

But if we take our eyes away from job skills for one second and look at liberal arts from a different perspective, we can see how important they are. In the BBC’s new documentary Civilizations, for example, presenters take us to 31 countries on six continents to appreciate human creativity, like Angkor Wat (吴哥窟) in Cambodia.

To Simon Schama, one of the presenters, human civilization isn’t just about technological inventions, but also “those moments when human beings first began to create things that were not purely for food or shelter, but were there to be seen, and to leave a mark of their existence for future humans to witness and admire”, he said.

In fact, by comparing science and liberal arts, we’re drawing “an artificial line” between the two. But to some of the greatest innovators in history, this line never existed in the first place.

Leonardo da Vinci, for example, was just as successful a scientist as he was a painter. Then there’s Steve Jobs, who, despite being an engineer, was also an artist on the inside. “It’s in Apple’s DNA that technology alone is not enough – it’s technology married with liberal arts, married with the humanities, that yields us the result that makes our heart sing.”

1.What’s the main purpose of this text?

    A. To introduce the contributions of great men.

    B. To compare science and liberal arts majors.

    C. To explain the line between science and art.

    D. To warn people not to undervalue liberal arts.

2.Which of the following is true according to the text?

    A. Leonardo da Vinci was more successful as a painter.

    B. It is the advanced technology that makes Apple successful.

    C. People find it easier to choose a major at college than before.

    D. There is actually no artificial line between science and liberal arts.

3.What can we infer from the passage?

    A. Many people consider liberal arts majors useless.

    B. Physicists are usually more important than philosophers.

    C. Innovators prefer to become artists on the inside.

    D. The program Civilizations can let us enjoy human creativity in 31 countries.

  2. Unlike produce such as peaches or bananas, strawberries begin to decline as soon as they are picked. Scientists have been working on a special protection that delays spoilage by slowing water loss and oxidation (氧化).

Every fruit and vegetable breathes. Once a piece of produce is picked from a tree or plant, it continues to breathe, aging slowly, until it begins to break down. Microorganisms then move in, causing it to spoil. Refrigeration can delay the process, but only so much.

Some scientists now think they can make your bananas, avocados, and other fresh produce last up to twice as long by delaying spoilage. Apeel, a start-up in Santa Barbara, California, has created a way to remove lipids from several popular crops and transform each type into a powder. Dissolved in water and applied to fruits or vegetables, it forms an edible(可食用的) barrier to lock moisture in and microorganisms out.

Farmers can apply a version of the solution in the field, or distributors can use the rinse (冲洗) on the packing line, extending a fruit’s shelf life by days or even weeks. The FDA recognizes the process as safe, and earlier this year it was approved for use on organic produce.

Giving shoppers more time with their fresh food is one purpose. But Apeel’s higher goal is to fight food waste and reduce the number of refrigerated trucks and ships that race between fields and stores to deliver food at its peak. The technology can also allow more crops to be delivered to more places farther and farther from where they’re grown. “You can imagine a world without seasonality of fresh produce,” says James Rogers, Apeel’s CEO and a materials scientist.

In the meantime, who couldn’t use a few extra days before that fruit in the fridge starts to mold?

1.What has the company, Apeel, invented?

    A. A strategy to fight food waste by mixing fruits or vegetables with crops.

    B. A solution to get rid of what causes fresh fruits or vegetables spoil.

    C. A method to remove crop lipids and change them into nutritious powder.

    D. A way to lock moisture in and microorganisms out by forming an edible barrier.

2.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

    A. Fruits and vegetables picked from trees can go bad easily without any protection.

    B. Scientists are aimed at a new way to prevent fresh produce from molding soon.

    C. Farmers and distributors can use what Apeel has created but it proves unsafe.

    D. Shoppers are among those who can benefit a lot from Apeel’s new idea.

3.What do James Rogers’s words mean?

    A. Every fruit and vegetable will stay fresh all year around in the future.

    B. The food fresh keeping technology contributes to long-distance transporting.

    C. You can get any fresh produce in any season in the future.

    D. You can use the fridge to store the fresh produce for a longer time.

  3. Mrs Smith trembled with excitement when she was told her fortunes. “Somebody is coming home to you,” Mrs Gray said slowly. “He’s carrying a rifle on his back and he’s almost there.”

Mrs Smith felt as if she could hardly breathe. “And there he is!” Mrs Gray cried, pointing to the road. They all rushed to the door to look.

A man in a blue coat, with a gun on his back, was walking down the road toward the Smith farm. His face was hidden by a large pack on his back.

Laughing and crying, Mrs Smith grabbed her hat and her children and ran out of Mrs Gray’s house. She hurried down the road after him, calling his name and pulling her children along with her. But the soldier was too far away for her voice to reach him.

When she got back to their farm, she saw the man standing by the fence. He was looking at the little house and the field of yellow wheat. The sun was almost touching the hills in the west. The cowbells rang softly as the animals moved toward the barn (畜棚).

“How peaceful it all is,” Private Smith thought. “How far away from the battles, the hospitals, the wounded and the dead. My little farm in Wisconsin. How could I have left it for those years of killing and suffering?”

Trembling and weak with emotion, Mrs Smith hurried up to her husband. Her feet made no sound on the grass, but he turned suddenly to face her. For the rest of his life, he would never forget her face at that moment.

    “Emma!” he cried.

The children stood back watching their mother kissing this strange man. He saw them, and kneeling down, he pulled from his pack three huge red apples. In a moment, all three children were in their father’s arms. Together, the family entered the little unpainted farmhouse.

Later that evening, after supper, Smith and his wife went outside. The moon was bright, above the eastern hills. Sweet, peaceful stars filled the sky as the night birds sang softly, and tiny insects buzzed in the soft air.

His farm needed work. His children needed clothing. He was no longer young and strong. But he began to plan for next year. With the same courage he had faced the war, Private Smith faced his difficult future.

1.Why could Mrs Smith hardly breathe when told her fortunes?

    A. She had a sudden heart attack and almost lost consciousness.

    B. She was shocked by the scene of a man with a rifle on his back.

    C. She was overjoyed on hearing the return of her husband.

    D. She ran out of the house too fast to catch her breath.

2.What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 7 suggest?

    A. The moment expected for years would be a life-long memory.

    B. He had almost forgotten her face after those years’ suffering.

    C. He was shocked by the excitement written on her face.

    D. He was afraid to be apart from her again.

3.What’s Private Smith’s attitude towards the future life?

    A. Skeptical. B. Confused. C. Hopeful. D. Concerned.

4.Which of the following might be the best title for the text?

    A. An Unexpected Visitor

    B. Husband and Wife

    C. The Return of a Private

    D. The Smiths

七选五 共 1 题
  1. Just Do It Today, Not Tomorrow

You're about to call your grandma and you figure you’ll call her as soon as you finish your after school snack. But then you decide to catch up on your favorite TV series, and after that you decide to upload the pictures and then..., before you know it, it’s time for bed. And you still haven’t called Gram. Uh-oh.

1.. But is this your day, every day? Are you always dragging your feet until the last minute and then rushing around to get it all done? Then listen up, because we can help you stop putting things off and start getting things done.

    1.Get organized---make a list!

Write everything down, and be sure to include when it needs to be completed. 2.. And make it fun--buy a cute notebook just for your to-do lists, and give yourself a happy face sticker every time you complete a task. Or, if you prefer to go digital, try note-taking apps, or just keep your list in the “notes” feature on your phone or pad.

    2.Reward yourself.

3.. For smaller jobs, promise yourself one TV series of your favorite YouTube show, or an uninterrupted 15 minutes reading your favorite book. For bigger accomplishments, like finishing up a huge school project, see if your parents will agree to something special, like a sleepover with your two best friends, or “just the two of us” breakfast with mom or dad.

    3.4..

When a project seems overwhelming, it’s so easy to come up with an excuse to postpone. So set small goals instead. For example, if you’re studying for a final exam, put each chapter you need to review on your to-do list, and then work on checking off one chapter a night the week before the exam. Thus, you won’t be stuck staying up late trying to cram everything in the night before the test---so not fun.

    4.Face your fears.

Sometimes you might put off doing something that you really want to do, like taking tennis lessons. If fear is holding you back, just remember that everyone had to start somewhere. 5.. So stop delaying, and get moving!

With just a few small changes, you’ll be able to get things done on time. So what are waiting for?

A.Once you identify the reason, you can figure out which strategy will help you tackle the task.

    B.Just do it.

C.You won’t be a beginner forever, and the longer you put it off, the harder it will be.

D.We all have those days when we just don't get enough done.

E.As you finish the task, put a big check-mark next to it!

    F.Break it down.

G.For those things that just aren’t that exciting to do, reward yourself for getting them done.

  1. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Alan and the other campers sat around the fire chewing meat chops. It would be Alan’s first night in a tent, and he was excited but a little nervous.

As they ate, the conservation officer spoke. “Much of the wildlife in this area comes out only at night. So after supper, let’s start a night watch. Volunteers will take turns to stay down here by the fire, away from the tents. Those who take part will get a chance to see a world that many of you never knew existed.”

    Alan’s stomach tightened.

    “Isn’t it dangerous?” someone asked.

“No, it’s quite safe,” the officer said.

“There are no dangerous animals this close to Cape Town. Any volunteers?”

A tough-looking kid with red hair muttered something about needing a good night’s sleep.

Another boy spoke up. “I’ll take a shift.” The kid who’d sat next to Alan on the bus volunteered. Alan sat tight. Then one of the girls raised her hand with a giggle.

Alan frowned. If a girl could do it, he could, too. He volunteered.

A few more kids raised their hands, and then the officer explained, “This is how it works. When the rest of you go to bed, the first watcher takes his or her place by the fire. The duty of watcher is to keep the fire going gently. After thirty minutes, he or she wakes the next person.”

Alan heard his voice asking, “Are you sure it’s absolutely safe?”

The officer looked at him. “Well, nothing is absolutely safe. Crossing the road isn’t absolutely safe. But the danger is minimal. We wouldn’t have taken you here otherwise. Do you still want to volunteer?”

Alan nodded but felt uneasy. Sleeping in a tent with other campers had sounded OK, but the idea of being alone in the night made him tremble.

Earlier that day, the officer had challenged the campers to spot animal tracks along the river. That was fun. But being alone in the dark was not. Alan’s flashlight was already fading to a dim glow because he had used it too often. Looking around, Alan thought he saw a large bird swooping(俯冲) and wondered if it was an owl. He had seen small paw prints in the sand by the river. Was the owl hunting for the creature that had made them?
