  1. Sam, an unemployed man, said it was only the second thing he had ever won in his life. The first thing was a blanket at a church raffle(抽奖) when he was 25 years old. But this was much bigger: it was $120,000! He had won the Big Cube(骰子), a state lottery(彩票) game. To win, a contestant must first guess which number a spinning cube will stop on. The cube has six numbers on it: 1X, 10X, 50X, 100X, 500X, and 1000X. If he is correct, the contestant must then guess which of two selected variables(变量) is going to be greater. So, just guessing which number appears on the cube does not guarantee that you will win any money. Sam correctly guessed 1000X, but he still had to choose between two variables. One variable was the number of cars that would run the stop sign at Hill Street and Lake Avenue in six hours. The other variable was the number of times that a teenage boy would change TV channels in a three-hour period. This was a tough decision.

Finally, Sam flipped(翻转) a coin. It came up heads, so Sam picked the teenager. He picked right. The stop sign was run only 76 times, but the teen clicked 120 times. Sixty-year-old Sam jumped for joy, for he had just won 1000 times 120, or $120,000. Sam dreamily left the lottery studio. Talking excitedly on his cell phone while crossing the street, he got hit by a little sports car.

Sam is slowly getting better. He was in the hospital for a month. His hospital bill was $110,000. And the insurance company for the little sports car's owner sued(起诉) Sam for $9,000 worth of repairs. Also, Sam still has to pay taxes on his winnings. Sam doesn't play the state lottery any more. He says it's better to be unlucky.

1.Sam won the blanket ________ years ago.

    A. 25 B. 60 C. 35 D. 76

2.Sam won the lottery because ______.

    A. he was lucky B. he was good at math

    C. he was smart D. he was tough

3.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

    A. The lottery game was a complete lie.

    B. Sam was quite familiar with the boy.

    C. The owner of the car is now in hospital.

    D. Sam will have none of the prize money left.

    4.Sam’s experience shows that ______

    A. everything has its time and that time must be watched.

    B. he who risks nothing, gains nothing.

    C. everything comes to him who waits.

    D. he who laughs on Friday will weep on Sunday.

  2. We were standing at the top of a church tower. My father had brought me to this place in a small town not far from our home in Rome. I wondered why.

“Look down, Elsa,” father said. I gathered all my courage and looked down. I saw the square in the center of the village. And I saw the crisscross (十字形) of the twisting, turning streets leading to the square. “See, my dear,” father said gently. “There is more than one way to the square. Life is like that. If you can’t get to the place where you want to go by one road, try another.”

Now I understood why I was there. Earlier that day I had begged my mother to do something about the bad lunches that were served at school. But she refused because she could not believe the lunches were as bad as I said.

When I turned to Father for help, he didn’t say anything. Instead, he brought me to this high tower to give me a lesson. By the time we reached home, I had a plan.

At school the next day, I secretly poured my lunch soup into a bottle and brought it home. Then I asked our cook to serve it to Mother at dinner. The plan worked perfectly. She swallowed one spoonful and sputtered(喷溅出) “ The cook must have gone mad!” Quickly I told her what I had done, and Mother stated firmly that she would take up the matter of lunches at school the next day!

In the years that followed I often remembered the lesson father taught me. I began to work as a fashion designer two years ago. I wouldn’t stop working until I tried every possible means to my goal. Father’s wise words always remind me that there is more than one way to the square.

1.The writer’s father took her to the top of a church tower to ________.

    A. enjoy the beautiful scenery of the whole town

    B. find out how many ways lead to the square

    C. inspire her to find out another way to solve her problem

    D. help her forgot some unpleasant things earlier that day

2.What did the writer want her mother to do earlier that day?

    A. Do something delicious for lunch.

    B. Taste her bad lunch.

    C. Dismiss the mad cook.

    D. Speak to the school about lunch.

3.The underlined sentence in Paragraph 5 means?

    A. The cook agreed to serve the soup to Mother.

    B. The matter of lunches was effective.

    C. Her father persuaded her mother successfully.

    D. The way the author thought of was successful.

  4. Let's face it. No one drinks diet sodas for the taste. People drink diet sodas in the hope that it will help them lose weight or at least keep them from gaining it. Yet it seems to have exactly the opposite effect, according to a new study.

Researchers from the University of Texas said those who drank two or more diet sodas a day had waist size increases that were six times greater than those who didn't drink diet sodas. “What we saw was that the more diet sodas a person drank, the more weight they were likely to gain,” said Sharon Fowler.

The study was based on data from 474 participants in a large, ongoing research project, where the participants were followed for nearly 10 years.

While the findings are surprising, they also offer some explanations.

Nutrition expert, Melanie Rogers, who works with overweight patients in New York, has found that when patients are switched from regular to diet sodas, they don't lose weight at all. “We weren't seeing weight loss necessarily, and that was confusing to us,” said Rogers.

So why would diet soda cause weight gain? No one knows for sure yet,but it could be that people think they can eat more if they drink diet sodas, and so over-compensate(弥补) for the missing calories.

A related study found some sweeteners (甜味剂) raised blood sugar levels in some mice. “Data from this and other potential studies suggest that the promotion of diet sodas and artificial sweeteners may be risky,” said Helen P. Hazuda, professor at School of Medicine of the University of Texas. “They may be free of calories, but not of consequences.”

    1.People drink diet sodas to________.

    A. enjoy its taste B. stay in fashion

    C. achieve weight loss D. gain more energy

2.We can learn from the passage that________.

    A. regular sodas make people lose more weight

    B. diet soda drinkers tend to eat more food

    C. diet sodas do help reduce calories

    D. most blood diseases come from diet sodas

3.The underlined word “They” in the last paragraph probably refers to“________”.

    A. sweeteners

    B. diet sodas and artificial sweeteners

    C. sodas

    D. diet soda drinkers and sweetener takers
