  1. My writing career began ten years ago with my articles published locally and nationally. As a beginning writer, I was happy to be on my way, writing and learning as much as I could . With two little kids underfoot, as well as working full-time, it was really difficult to make time for writing, but I managed.

Readers told me they laughed, cried or were inspired by my articles. But they didn't know what was really going on behind the typewriter. I was not a happy mommy, and found it difficult to enjoy the everyday little things in life. In short, I was not a happy person.

I realized I had to make some changes. I started walking every morning. It cleared my head, allowed me time to think, gave me fresh air, and made me feel invigorated (精神焕发) and healthy. I was eating wisely, and the weight started to go. I started a new job, joined a monthly writing chapter, and was determined to keep up my walking. Finding the balance was sometimes difficult. But I was determined to fit in writing time because it made me happy. Sure I loved to watch the news and have my tea, but that wasn't what made me truly happy.

My own happiness has shown through my family, my job performance and my attitude towards challenging situations. I again have readers telling me the effect my writing has had on them, with some able to get on with their own writing because of my articles.

It was up to me to make it happen—my own happiness. One step at a time-one word at a time. And I did it.

    A. To be physically healthy.

    B. To enjoy fresh early morning air.

    C. To have more energy for writing.

3.What can we know about the author from the text?

    A. Her articles had a great effect on readers.

    B. She didn't enjoy making changes in her life.

    C. She wasn't interested in watching TV news.

    D. She couldn't find the balance between work and life.

4.What do you think is the main idea of the story?

    A. Practice makes perfect. B. Well begun is half done.

  3. It is probably the strangest sport anyone has ever invented. And at first sight, it looks like the easiest. Competitors have to do two things. The first is to stand still. The second is to place their hands anywhere on the body of a car, and keep it there.

This is where things start getting difficult. Lots of people are doing the same thing. And the winner of the “handstand” contest is the person who can carry on doing it for the longest time. That person gets to own the car.

It still seems to be an easy thing to do. At the beginning it is. Anyone can stand still. But when the contest has been going for four or five days, standing still seems like the most difficult job in the world . And keeping the hand in place over this time becomes an act of serious attention. After a few days, the hand seems to belong to someone else----someone who wants to go home and get some sleep.

Competitors are allowed to take a five-minute break every hour to eat, drink or do whatever else is necessary. No one is allowed to lean on the car for support. Winners need to be able to show great powers of attention. They also need to be able to develop special skills.

Maybe the popularity of the “handathon” is due to the fact that it is not necessary to be a trained athlete to enter. Competitors in the Longview handathon certainly don’t seem to do much preparation. Most say they will prepare by “getting lots of sleep”. Others say they will “eat healthy food” or “pray for success”. The whole event gives ordinary people the chance to do something interesting and win something in the end.

Handathons are competitions, but there is little rivalry (竞争) between competitors. They help each other out and keep each other’s spitits up. People who drop out early return with food, drink and encouragement.

1.What ability is most important in a handathon?

    A. Not leaning on the car B. Standing without any support

    C. Having strong powers of attention D. Eating and drinking in five minutes

    2.Why is handathon popular?

    A. Anyone who is interested can join in it.

    B. Someone can win with special training

    C. It doesn’t need to make any preparation

    D. People get along well with each other in it.

3.Which of the following statements about the “handathon” is right?

    A. Competitors are not allowed to drop out

    B. Competitors don’t encourage each other

    C. Competitors can sit down and take a 10-minute break every hour

    D. A competitor has to place his or her hand anywhere on the body of a car.

4.Which is the writer’s opinion about the “handathon”?

    A. It is the easiest of all sports.

    B. It can last a whole day.

    C. It is not as easy as it looks at first.

    D. It is no good competing in a “handathon”

  4. As the population of the planet increases, so does the number of homes, business, parking lots, schools, airports and roadways. All these structures use electricity and need to be lighted. Humans demand light. They want their homes more comfortable and they want their streets safe. The problem is that researchers are finding that all the light is having a negative effect on humans and wildlife as well.

Less than 10 years ago I drove to a thinly populated section of my own, lay down in the middle of the road and watched an attractive meteor shower(流星雨). If I did that today, I wouldn’t be able to see the meteor shower.

Nowadays scientists are finding light pollution can be almost as bad as carbon dioxide (二氧化碳)pollution. One of the saddest parts of light pollution is that most of it is unnecessary and most of the outdoor light that we use is wasted. One only needs to look at a row of street lights to see how much of the lights shines upwards and lights the sky: a total waste of electricity.

Additionally, the production of electricity creates pollution by releasing greenhouse gases. This affects the air we breathe and our quality of life.

Scientists are also studying the effects of light pollution on wildlife. Thousands of birds die each year when they crash into highly lighted buildings, as they become puzzled by the light. It has been long known that tiny baby sea turtles become lost and follow the light on the shore instead of heading towards the sea.

Fortunately, light pollution is one of the easiest sources of pollution that can be corrected without a negative effect. Following some guidelines and a little searching on Google can give you many ideas on how to reduce your contribution to light pollution.

1.According to the passage, the best way to deal with light pollution is to ______.

    A. Reducing the output of lights

    B. Educating people about light pollution

    C. Avoiding the use of unnecessary lighting

    D. Inventing environmentally-friendly lights

2.What can be inferred from the passage?

    A. Astronauts can’t see clearly in space nowadays

    B. Global warming results in light pollution in some way

    C. We are almost at a loss how to deal with light pollution

    D. Some animals use natural light to direct their movements.

3.What will probably be provided following the last paragraph?

    A. Benefits of searching on Google

    B. More bad effects of light pollution

    C. Helpful tips for suffering the Internet

    D. Ways to decrease light pollution
