  2. In summer the extreme heat often makes people sweaty and restless. While people are annoyed by it, experts suggest summer is the best season to discharge(排放) your body’s toxins(毒素) and recover your energy.

One popular option is hot-stone massage(按摩). Therapists use smooth and heated stones, usually river rocks, to massage certain parts of the body, or place them on key points of the body. The warmth of the hot stones will improve blood circulation and also help relax muscles, while sweating is also believed to be good for discharging the body’s toxins.

Another popular option is hot-stone baths. The hot-stone bath will help the body discharge toxins and humidity (湿气) that accumulated during the last winter. Summer is the best season to build a good body. Rather than use water or steam to heat and wash the body, people simply wear a coat or something comfortable, and then lie on heated stone tablets made of hot stones, which are warmed to around 45℃. The body will gradually warm up and blood circulation will also be improved. More sweat will come out quickly. The sweat is smooth and fresh, not smelly like that released after sports activities. Such baths bring a number of health benefits, such as anti-aging, improved blood circulation and stress relief. The slimming effect of dieting can even be promoted.

Using hot stones for healing dates back to ancient times, but the modern renewal of hot-stone massage is generally credited to Mary Nelson, a native of Tucson, Arizona, America, whose trademark is “LaStone Therapy”.

The therapy is gaining wide popularity with many people, especially those who have jobs in cool air-conditioned rooms. The hot-stone therapy can help cure many diseases, including back pain.

1.What do people use to release toxins in our body according to the text?

    A. Swimming in white water. B. Living in cold winter.

    C. Lying on the warm beds. D. Discharging lots of sweat.

2.What can we know from the text?

    A. There are no toxins and humidity in the body in summer.

    B. Sports have greater effects on the health than hot-stone massage.

    C. Using water of about 45℃ to wash the body is good for the health.

    D. People should take advantage of summer to improve their health.

3.What can be learned about the hot-stone therapy?

    A. It was invented by Mary Nelson, an American.

    B. It successfully cured many people of cancer.

    C. It is popular with people because of its excellent effects.

    D. It can help people avoid sweating too much in hot summer.

4.Which of the following could be the best title for the text?

    A. How to live comfortably in summer

    B. A healthy and comfortable lifestyle

    C. The amazing functions of the hot-stone therapy

    D. The origin and development of the hot-stone therapy

  3. Whatever Rock was doing down there, it made enough noise for me to go to him. By the time I made it to the bottom of the stairs, he was running up, and he never came up the stairs, no matter what. I think that was his way of telling me, “We’ve got to go back up.”

When I got to the top of the stairs, I turned around and saw a light on, but I didn’t remember leaving one on. I walked downstairs again, and that’s when I saw fire, I immediately shouted to my wife to wake up and get our three kids, I grabbed a knife and cut out the plastic that covered the window to the porch roof. I then broke the window and kicked out the screen. I got everybody out on the roof and threw a blanket out there so we wouldn’t slip off. It was cold, January cold. Then I started screaming for help. But help never came.

Now, I’m scared of heights and have physical issues, what with my rheumatoid arthritis(类风湿性关节炎), but I couldn’t let my family burn up. So I jumped off the roof. I didn’t run to the edge; I just jumped and got the wind knocked out of me when I landed.

I found our ladder, placed it against the house, and climbed back up to the roof. I wrapped my arms around my daughter and carried my nine-month-old son with my teeth, by his little sleeper. Then I climbed down the ladder. Once on the ground, I had my little girl hold her brother, and I went back up to the roof to get my other daughter. Then I went back up again and got my wife. I tried to get my dog, but he just disappeared in the black smoke. I never saw him alive again.

I’m no hero. I’m just an ordinary person who’d help anybody. This happened to be the time when I helped my own family. I live to protect my family. Just like Rock—he lived to protect us.

1.Why did Rock make enough noise?

    A. Rock caused the fire and tried to escape. B. Rock was warming up itself to fight cold.

    C. Rock was playing upstairs and downstairs. D. Rock tried to remind the author of the fire.

2.The author jumped off the roof ________.

    A. to call for help B. to challenge himself

    C. to find tools for rescue D. to escape being burned

3.What can we learn about the author?

    A. Strict and devoted. B. Smart and sociable.

    C. Responsible and brave. D. Powerful and considerate.

4.Which of the following can be the best title of the text?

    A. Rock’s Heroic Life B. Escape from the Fire

    C. A Lesson I Have Learnt D. My Adventure Experience

  4. When Dee Dee Bridgewater learned that she would become a 2017 NEA Jazz Master, a series of thoughts and feelings flooded her mind. “It was so far out of my orbit and just my whole sphere of thinking,” she said in a conversation at NPR this spring, hours before she formally received her award.

She’s 66-far from retirement age in jazz, and on the extreme forward edge of the NEA Jazz Masters people. So she was aware of her relative youth in the field She also recognized that there haven’t been many women in the ranks of NEA Jazz Masters: fewer than 20, out of 145. That idea led her to reflect on her predecessors (前任): legendary singers like Betty Carter* who was seated back in 1992, and Abbey Lincoln, who received the nod in 2003.

Bridgewater sought inspiration and advice from both Carter and Lincoln, as she recalls in this period of Jazz Night, which features music recorded during the season opener for Jazz at Lincoln Center. On a program called “Songs of Freedom”, organized by drummer Ulysses Owens, Jr., Bridgewater sang material associated with Lincoln as well as Nina Simone: an extremely angry song of the civil rights movement, like “Mississippi Goddam”.

A separate concert, “Songs We Love”, found Bridgewater singing less politically charged (but still exciting) fare like “St. James Infirmary”, which appears on her most recent album. In words as well as music, this period reveals how seriously Bridgewater takes that responsibility, seeing as how it connects to her own experience in the jazz lineage. But maybe “seriously” isn’t the right word when it comes to Dee Dee, whose effervescence (欢腾) shines through even in a reflective mood. Join her here for a while; she’s excellent company, no more or less so now that mastery is officially a part of her resume.

1.What did Bridgewater think of her winning the award?

    A. It confused her.

    B. It was beyond her expectation.

    C. It won great popular support for her.

    D. It gave her much confidence about her career.

2.What can we learn about the musicians winning NEA Jazz Masters?

    A. Women ranked higher than men.

    B. Men accounted for a bigger part of them.

    C. Most of them were unwilling to retire at first.

    D. Many of them received the award at an early age.

3.Who is more likely to have a great influence on Bridgewater?

    A. Carter and Lincoln. B. Ulysses and Lincoln.

    C. Nina Simone and Carter. D. Nina Simone and Ulysses.

4.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?

    A. Bridgewater’s music theme.

    B. Bridgewater’s music experience.

    C. Bridgewater’s personal characters.

    D. Bridgewater’s great achievements.
