  2. Swimming is one of those activities that can be learned early in life. Little children can learn to swim as soon as they walk. In fact, you need the same skills in walking as in swimming. However, I believe that five is the best age to learn. By five or six, a child knows fear of water, a very important thing to know. It's wise to be afraid, to recognize true danger. Young ones understand that the water can sometimes be very dangerous.

To really benefit from swimming, every swimmer should learn, as soon as possible, these four basic strokes; butterfly, backstroke, Breaststroke, and crawl. I feel that one of these-the breaststroke-is different from the others, since some young swimmers use this stroke naturally, without any training.

In swimming there are certain rules every swimmer should follow:

1). Never swim alone! No matter how good you are in the water, don’t risk drowning by swimming alone. If you swim by yourself, with no life guards or friends with you, you may get into trouble.

2). Don't go beyond your abilities. Most swimmers know enough not to swim too far from the bank or the beach, Showing off by doing dangerous tricks is no good. Swim safely and you will continue to swim and alive.

3). Don't smoke. Swimming depends on a healthy body; good lungs are part of it.

4). Work at any activity that builds muscles.

1.Little children can learn to swim as soon as _____.

    A.they can talk

    B.they start walking

C.they have no fear of the water

D.they are five or six years old

2.The author believes that fear of water is_____.

    A.stupid B.sensible C.dangerous D.not smart

3.The stroke that some young swimmers use first is_____.

    A.butterfly B.backstroke C.breaststroke D.crawl

4.According to the passage, you should not swim alone because_____.

    A.the water is too cold

B.your parents would not be happy

C.something in the water might attack

    D.you might drown

  3. When was the last time someone unexpectedly did something nice for you? Not someone you knew, but a total stranger? It's happened to me a few times, but two instances really stand out.

A few years ago, I was dining in a restaurant with a friend who kept talking about himself, completely not aware of the fact that I was sitting there in misery. It wasn't my friend's talks that made me suffer. I was recovering from a broken heart, and just sitting down to dinner reminded me of my last relationship. I could have burst into tears right there at the table.

When we picked up the check, the waitress said, “Your meal was already paid for.” My friend and I didn't have a clue how it happened. Then I remembered a man I saw out of the corner of my eye. He was dressed in mostly white, sat down at the bar, had a beer, and stayed for maybe ten minutes. The waitress said, “Yes, the gentleman in white paid for you.” It felt like an angel was saying, “I see you, honey. It's going to be okay.”

Just last year, I was running a halfmarathon. With just 1 mile to go, I was out of gas. Runners call it “hitting_the_wall”. I thought I couldn't move another inch. Out of nowhere, a stranger came up to me and said, “What's your name, sweetie? Jennifer? Okay, Jennifer, let's go! Come on! It's just around the corner! You can do it!” And he ran with me until I picked up my pace. I found him at the finish line to thank him for the encouragement only to learn he wasn't even supposed to be in the race that day.

I still shake my head when I think of these momentary angels that came to me at my point of need. Do you have any experiences like these?

1.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

    A.The kindness of strangers

    B.Valuable friendship

    C.Two special experiences

    D.Helping others is worthwhile

2.According to the passage, the man in white ____.

    A.was the author's friend

B.had a big meal in the restaurant

    C.was generous and kindhearted

    D.enjoyed making fun of others

3.The underlined expression in the passage means “____”.

    A.being hurt by the wall

    B.winning the game

    C.taking a deep breath

    D.running out of energy

4.A stranger helped the author during a halfmarathon by ____.

A.giving her a bottle of water

    B.accompanying and encouraging her

    C.showing her the right way

    D.keeping her cool and awake

  4. Will life in the future be better, worse or the same as now? Futurologists(未来学家)predict that life will probably be very different in 2050.

First of all, it seems that TV channels will have disappeared by 2050. A computer will send the program directly to the television. On TV screen appear holograms(全息图), which are pictures with certain height, width and depth. We will be able to see, smell and touch the things that we see on television.

Water has become one of our most serious problems. Agriculture is changing and people are growing more fruit and vegetables to export. Demand for water will increase ten times in 2050. Some futurologists predict that water will be the cause of war if we don’t act now.

In transport, cars will run on new fuels and go very fast. A car will have computers to control its speed and there won’t be any accidents. On the other hand, space planes will take people around the earth in about three hours. People will fly from Los Angeles to Tokyo by space plane in just half an hour.

In the field of technology, robots will have replaced people in factories. By 2050, we will see robots everywhere. They do not ask for pay rises or go on strike, and they work 24 hours a day.

Medicine technology will have conquered many diseases by 2050; we will be able to help blind and deaf people see again and hear again. Scientists have discovered how to control genes. They have already produced clones of animals and will be able to produce clones of people and decide how they look, how they behave and how much intelligence they have. If you want all this to come true, you should study science and technology hard.

1.What is the main difference between today’s and 2050’s TV?

A.We can use a computer to turn off the TV set.

B.We can talk with the characters appearing on TV.

C.We can choose whatever we like to see on TV.

D.We can touch the things we see on TV.

2.What isn’t mentioned about the future in 2050 in the passage?

    A.Technology. B.Medicine. C.Movies. D.Agriculture.

3.What will be more likely to cause the war in the future?

A.The lack of water. B.The less farmland.

C.The shortage of robots. D.The more space planes.

4.From the passage we can infer that by 2050 ____.

A.people will spend less time in studying

B.more and more people needn’t go to school

C.people will have more time to relax or rest

D.no patients will be found in the world
