  1. Nearly each country in the world has its official honors reserved (保留) for outstanding people. For instance, in the United State, the highest civilian honor is the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In China, there are also such official honors given to people who have made outstanding contributions (贡献)to the nation's construction and development.

On Sept. 17, 2019, President Xi Jinping signed a presidential decree (主席法令) to award 42 individuals the Medal of the Republic, the Friendship Medal and various honorary titles.

Shen Jilan, an 89 year old farmer, is one of the eight people who were awarded the Medal of the Republic. She is the only person in China who has served at all 13 National People's Congresses (人民代表大会) since 1954. She is the very witness to the development of the People's Congress system. It was she who put forward the clause on “equal pay for equal work” between men and women, which was written into the first Constitution of PRC in 1954.

Tu Youyou, who had received the Nobel Medicine Prize in 2015,was also awarded the Medal of the Republic. She is famous for finding out Qinghaosu, which has helped to save millions of lives. Before the discovery, malaria is a deadly disease to people of tropical developing countries in South Asia, Africa and South America. Therefore, her discovery of Qinghaosu and its treatment of this disease is considered as an important breakthrough in the 20th century.

Yuan Longping, the father of hybrid rice (杂交水稻), received the Medal of the Republic as well. He is known for his great contributions to hybrid rice research and the wonderful work he has done to improve rice production in many developing countries. Judging from his appearance, he looks like a farmer rather than a scientist, with his sunburnt face and slim, strong body. That is because he always works under the sun for a long time and that is how he developed hybrid rice which produces 1/3 more than normal rice.

Ye Peijian who has been devoted to China's lunar program for twenty years, received the honorary title “the people's scientist”. He is well-known as a leading scientist in deep-space exploration at the China Academy of Space Technology.

  2. It is hard, it hurts —and yet more than two million of us in the UK run at least once a week.

Of course, some people run to lose weight, or to get fit, and these are great reasons. Running is also easy to do, it's cheap, and you can do it when you want. All these factors certainly contribute to the fact that running is one of the most popular sports in the UK.

But for many of those two million runners, the real reason we head out to beat the roads until our legs hurt is more intangible (无形的) than weight loss or fitness.

Many runners become interested in times. They try to break the 40-minute barrier for the 10K, or run under four hours for the marathon. Yet, really, these times are almost meaningless. And as soon as they are achieved, another target is thrown out almost immediately.

The times are only the carrots we put in front of ourselves. But why do we put them there in the first place? Nobody ever gives a wise answer Deep down, we all know the answer.

Running brings us joy. Watch small children when they are excited, at play, and mostly they can't stop running. There's a great moment in The Catcher in the Rye when Holden Caulfield, caught in the uneasy space between childhood and adulthood, is walking across his school grounds one evening and he suddenly starts to run. “I don't ever know what I was running for一I guess I just felt like it,” he says.

This will to run is born. In fact, humans may well have evolved (进化) the way we did because of our ability to run. As children, and even adolescents, we can respond to this natural call to run whenever the feeling takes us.

As we run, we begin to sense that childish joy, which is born to live a wilder existence. As we run, the layers of responsibility and identity we have gathered in our lives, father, mother, lawyer, teacher, all fall away, leaving us with the raw human being.

If we push on, running harder, deeper into the loneliness, further away from the world and the structure of our lives, we begin to feel strangely excited, separated yet at the same time connected, to ourselves. With nothing but our own two legs moving us, we begin to get a sense of who, or what, we really are. After a long run, everything seems right in the world. Everything is at peace. To experience this is a powerful feeling, strong enough to have us coming back, again and again, for more.

1.Why does the author think setting time goals is almost meaningless?

A.Because those time goals can' t be achieved.

B.Because those time goals can be achieved easily

C.Because people will be very proud once the time goals are achieved.

D.Because there will always be a new time goal once the former one is achieved.

2.The author mentions the reasons for running EXCEPT___________.

A.challenging ourselves B.running away from responsibility

C.losing weight and keeping fit D.bringing us joy and peace in mind

3.Which of the following words can best describe the author's attitude towards running?

    A.Uncertain. B.Doubtful.

    C.Supportive. D.Puzzled.

4.What does the underlined word "this “in the last paragraph probably mean?

A.breaking the 40 -minute barrier for the 10K.

B.running under four hours for the Marathon.

C.feeling separated from the world after running

D.feeling everything is right after a long run.

5.What may be the best tile of this passage ?

A.Running to Keep Fit B.Running to Break Records

C.Running to Be the Real You D.Running to Become an Adult

  3. In 1987, a mountain on Mercury (水星) got a name--Li Qingzhao, the name of a Chinese female poet. According to the International Astronomical Union, all new mountains on Mercury must be named after a litterateur (文人) or an artist who was famous for more than fifty years, and dead for more than three years, before the date they are named. Of the total of 310 names, fifteen are named after famous Chinese writers and artists, and Li Qingzhao is one of them, together with Li Bai, Bai Juyi ,Cao Xueqin and Lu Xun.

What did Li Qingzhao do to deserve such an honour? Li is a poet of the Song Dynasty. Compared with other male poets in China, who have left hundreds or even thousands of poems, Li has only eighty-seven, like a drop in a bucket of water However, her talents and artistic creativity as shown in her eighty-seven works have earned her a lasting place in the Chinese literary circle.

Li was born into a scholar-official family in 1084. Like other young women in a rich family, she was well-read and trained in Chinese calligraphy (书法) and musical instrument. Most young women of rich families were taught to follow the "Three Obediences and Four Virtues" at that time, while Li was free in both character building and artistic development.

When it was time for her to start another stage in life--marriage, Li married Zhao Mingcheng. a student at the supreme academy of the imperial court. The couple devoted their spare time to their common interests --literature and the collection of calligraphy and painting.

Unluckily, their happiness didn't last long. The power struggle at the very top of the government destroyed everything. Li first followed her husband to Qing Zhou, and spent the next ten years there. It turned out that the ten years in Qing Zhou was the most productive period for her artistic creativity. Then in 1127, when the North Song Dynasty ended, Li followed her husband to Lin'an. Soon her husband died. And the worst part was that not only did she lose her loved husband but she also lost most of her accumulated (积累的) works.

Later, Li remarried a government official, who turned out to be a total liar and treated her badly. She died in 1155 in loneliness and pain.

1.With the strict rules set by The International Astronomical Union in naming mountains on Mercury,_____________.

A.Li Qingzhao is the only female poet

B.310 of them are named after famous Chinese figures

C.15 of them are named after well-known Chinese writers and artists

D.none but Li Qingzhao, Li Bai, Bai Juyi, Cao Xueqin and Lu Xun are chosen

2.Why did Li Qingzhao deserve such an honour?

    A.Because she wrote eighty-seven poems.

B.Because she was like a drop in a bucket of water.

C.Because she was a famous female poet in the Song Dynasty.

D.Because she had great talents and artistic creativity shown in her poems.

3.What can we learn about Li Qingzhao's young adulthood from the passage?

A.She grew up in a quite relaxed family.

B.She was free to do whatever she wanted to.

C.She was forced to follow the "Three Obediences and Four Virtues".

D.She showed little interest in Chinese calligraphy and musical instrument.

4.Which of the following factors may help Li Qingzhao become an outstanding litterateur?

A.Praise from an international union. B.The family background as a child.

C.Change of the dynasties. D.Her second marriage.

5.How does the author tell the story of Li Qingzhao ?

A.In time order. B.By listing facts.

C.In space order. D.By giving examples.
