  2. When you see flowers for sale, do you ever think of how they got from where they were grown? In most cases, they were grown in another country and imported to a big market in the Netherlands (荷兰),which sells 80 percent of the flowers and plants in the world. After they are traded there, they are exported again by plane all over the world. Eventually, they come to your town or city.

Since the 1500s Netherlands has been famous for growing and selling plants. In 1592,the first tulip (郁金香)bulb was imported to Netherlands from Turkey and tulips quickly caught on. As a matter of fact, some people struck it rich with tulips. Just one tulip bulb was worth as much as a house in Amsterdam!

These days, the nation is still famous for its tulips and many other kinds of flowers as well. Many kinds of flowers are grown in greenhouses that are heated and lit so it's summer all year inside. In addition, millions of flowers arrive by plane every day at Amsterdam Airport. The center of the flower industry is the Aalsmeer Flower Auction located near the airport, about 16 kilometers from downtown Amsterdam. Every year, three billion flowers and 400 million plants are traded here. They come from 8,000 growers in places like Kenya, Ecuador and Indonesia. In an auction, buyers try to get the best flowers for the lowest prices so they can make a profit. At Aalsmeer, the prices start high and decrease. You have to watch out because it happens very quickly. The first person to press a button gets the plants at that price. As a rule, it only takes seconds to sell bunches of flowers, especially those in high demand. six hundred groups are sold each hour, so you have to decide what price you will payin a hurry. As soon as beautiful roses catch your eye, you must act. The next time you admire a bunch of roses, think about the adventure that the flowers have had. Where they came from may remain a mystery, but they almost certainly had a brief stop at Aalsmeer.

  3. One of life's great treats, for a lover of books( especially fantasy books),is to open a cover to find a map secreted inside and filled with the details of a land about to be discovered. A writer's map shows a fully imagined world. A new book, "The Writer's Map," contains dozens of the magical maps that writers have drawn or that have been made by others to explain the places they've created. " All maps are products of human imagination, "writes Lewis Jones, the book's editor." For some writers making a map is absolutely central to the skills of shaping and telling their tale."

The book includes the map from Thomas More's "Utopia", which were published in 1516 and contained the first fantasy map in a work of fiction, as far as anyone can tell. The book also has the maps that remind fantasy —filled childhoods: Middle Earth, the mystenous Narnia, the Hundred Acre Wood, etc. But there are more maps of private treasures here. too. Among these maps, the one for. "Treasure Island" is a landmark," one of the most typical literary(文学的) mans of all "Lewis Jones writes. It comes up more than once in the book's reviews, which are written by writers and mapmakers. Robert Stevenson first sketched the map in 1881 for his son, and a red X marks the place where treasure was buried.

For many writers, mapmaking is a practical work that pulls them into their own work. “ I always draw my way into stories," writes Abi Elphinstone, the author of the "Dreamsnatcher" books. “ I begin every story I write by drawing a map because it helps me know where my characters move next. Also, making maps is fun." Mapping does have problems. Frances Hardinge, a British children's book writer, explains the worlds she dreams up are"unmappable." A map helps shape a reader's idea of a fictional Place, but it may limit the readers' imagination.

Many of you may know that Jakarta is the capital city of Indonesia.1.Last month, Indonesia said that the country would move its capital from Jakarta to Kalimantan. This is big news for Indonesia.

The word capital comes from the Latin word "caput", meaning "head". It is no doubt the "head" of a country. The central government and important institutions (机构)are put there. 2. In English -language news reports, when you read "relations between Beijing and Moscow" ,it actually means "relations between China and Russia".3. Therefore, it is important to choose a good place for one's capital. In many countries, the capital is the richest city. This is because when a city becomes an important business center, it takes on a more important place around the world.

London, for example, has been the economic(经济)center of Britain for nearly 2,000 years, so people naturally chose it as the capital. 4.For example, Brazil's capital used to be Rio de Janeiro, which is a coastal city. Later the capital moved to the island city of Brasilia, partly because coastal cities can be attacked( 攻击) more easily.

In the case of Indonesia, the new capital was chosen in order to achieve development in different areas. 5. By becoming the new capital, it can expect faster economic growth.

    A. But this will change soon.

    B. That is how important the capital is.

    C. Some countries have several capitals.

    D. Kalimantan is an underdeveloped area.

    E. Maybe we got the right ideas because of that.

    F. Sometimes, capitals are chosen for safety reasons.

    G. The leaders of a country usually work and live in the capital as well.
