    ● Introduce yourself and ask for names

Make sure you properly introduce yourself. Ask for their names in a polite way. 4.. This will increase the chances of their remembering your name in the future. Always remember to stand up when greeting someone and be sure to introduce them to anyone you’re with.

    ● Make a good conversation

To get the most out of your discussion, try to find something common between the two of you. 5.. A person will feel more comfortable with someone who they can relate to(产生共鸣).

  2. Melbourne, Australia

Melbourne is a hot-spot travel destination, and it’s easy to see its beautiful beaches and busy city life.

Why it’s a great choice: Australia as a whole is considered a safe destination for international travel, and because of that, many solo travelers go there. As an English-speaking country, you won’t be faced with any language barriers. Melbourne is easy to get around because you can walk or bike practically anywhere!

    Thailand

Thailand is great for solo travelers—perhaps because it is one of the Buddhist mindsets, which promotes equality among the sexes.

Why it’s a great choice: Thailand is known for its friendly atmosphere, and as a travel hotspot, there are plenty of chances to meet other like-minded travelers. It is also well known for being very cheap, especially in the north. Thailand has a lot to offer, from the party-central Bangkok to beautiful beaches and tropical(热带)jungle.

  3. Christopher came to our school in the middle of the year, right after Christmas. He was the only new kid but he wasn’t shy at all. He stood front of the class and introduced himself with full confidence. Right away, I felt as if I found my other half. I immediately ran to Mrs. Rose and asked if Christopher could sit next to me.

We both were funny and liked sports, food. But my classmates stayed away from Christopher because he had to get pricked(验血)every time after he ate sweets like cookies.

The day before spring break all sorts of candies and desserts were being passed out. I stuffed my face with every sugary sweet I could find. I made sure to take a couple for Christopher too but he didn’t touch them.

“Why aren’t you eating Christopher?” I asked. He replied firmly, “I can’t.”

I begged him and then he got mad and said, “I told you I couldn’t eat it! Stop it! Stop!” I sat there puzzled.

I went home that night with a million questions. My mom sat me down and told me that Christopher had diabetes(糖尿病)and that was the reason why he couldn’t eat as much sugar as everyone else.

After spring break when we got back, I asked Mrs, Rose if I could share with the class about Christopher’s medical condition and she agreed. I told them about his diabetes and suggested that every snack or sweet that we brought to class be appropriate for Christopher to eat. Surprisingly, all of them agreed.

Months went by and Christopher was happier than ever. He had even more friends now and he didn’t feel so left out during snack time because everyone was eating the same treat.

  4. Internet use appears to cause a decline in psychological well-being(安康), according to research at Carnegie Mellon University.

Even people who spent just a few hours a week on the Internet experienced more depression and loneliness than those who logged on less frequently, the two-year study showed. And it wasn’t that people who were already feeling bad spent more time on the Internet, but that using the Net actually appeared to cause the bad feeling.

Researchers are puzzling over the results, which were completely contrary to their expectations. They expected that the net would prove socially healthier than television, since the Net allows users to choose their information and to communicate with others.

The fact that Internet use reduces time available for family and friends may account for the drop in well-being, researchers suggested. Faceless, bodiless “virtual”(虚拟的)communication may be less psychologically satisfying than actual conversation, and the relationship formed through it may be shallower. Another possibility is that exposure to the wider world via the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives.

“But it’s important to remember this is not about the technology per se; it’s about how it is used,” says psychologist Christine Riley of Intel, one of the study’s sponsors. “It really points to the need for considering social effects in terms of how you design applications and services for technology.”

1.The best title for this passage would be ________.

    A.Internet may Cause Depression

    B.The Dark Side of Internet

    C.How to Use Technology Properly

    D.The Importance of Psychological Well-being

2.Internet use may cause a decline in psychological well-being because ________.

A.people who were already feeling bad spend more time on the Internet

B.Internet users thought the world was wider than it really was

C.people were too eager to turn the “virtual” communication into reality

D.people have less time for actual communication with their family and friends

3.What does the underlined Latin word “per se” (in Para. 5) mean?

    A.probably B.absolutely

    C.oneself D.itself
