Brandy was an old dog. When her owner died, the dog stayed near the house and waited for her owner to return. Some of the neighbors left food out for Brandy. One day, Brandy walked into the neighbor’s yard and began playing with the 18-month-old Adam. The young mother didn’t like the dirty dog at first. But seeing her son having fun playing with her, she decided to give Brandy a bath and let her stay.

Oink! The Year of the Pig is coming. How much do you know about pigs? Do you like them? Many people don’t because they believe that pigs are naturally fat, lazy and dirty. But are any of those things true?
It is true that pigs are fat. They eat a lot. But they are useful to us. We get more than just pork from pigs. We can use their skin to make shoes. We can use their hair to make brushes. Pigs also provide us with ingredients for drugs like insulin (胰岛素). Insulin can treat diabetes (糖尿病)
People sometimes say, “You are as stupid as a pig.” But pigs are not stupid. In fact, pigs are one of the 10 smartest animals. They have a good memory and can tell different shapes apart. Many experts think pigs are easier to train than dogs or cats. In France, people teach pigs to find truffles (松露). With their good sense of smell they can find truffles even faster than dogs.
When you see pigs, they are usually in dirty water or mud. That’s because pigs have no sweat glands (汗腺). On hot days, they have to cool themselves in water or mud. This keeps insects of them as well. Mud can also protect their skin from sunburns.
These stereotypes about pigs often make us hold a negative view about the animal. For example, if someone eats a lot, we say that they have “pigged out”. If someone’s room is very mess, we might say his or her room looks like a pigsty (猪圈).
But people in ancient China really liked pigs. People thought the pig’s big head and ears were a symbol of good luck. If someone had a round and chubby (胖乎乎的) face, he or she was thought to be blessed (有福气的). People also believed the animal stood for wealth, as humans use every part of the pig. Piggy banks are a symbol of this. Most children have a piggy bank that they can use to save money.

The Science magazine reported that scientists had successfully grown meat in their laboratory by November, 2018. The news aroused heated discussion among the public. Is the meat safe? Is it any different? Why do we have to grow meat in a lab? People have tons of questions about this. And the scientists said that the lab-grown meat is produced when cells from animals are grown under lab conditions. It isn't like plant-based meat substitutes (替代品) made from vegetable proteins (蛋白质), since cell-based meat is grown from actual animal cells. This means that it is an animal product, so not suitable for vegetarians.
Is cell-cultured meat the same as ordinary meat? The muscle fibers (纤维) produced in the lab are the same as those found in steak, said leading researchers in this technology at Maastricht University in The Netherlands. But they pointed out that to get the same nutrient. (营养物) content that is found in red meat, they need to make some changes to the procedure. Scientists say they are also looking into changing the type of fat in lab-grown meat, for example.
Some people have concerns with growing meat in the lab. Some say this method of meat production would result in less land and water use. Others argue that growing meat in the lab would influence the environment more negatively than our traditional way of raising cattle. It would take massive amounts of energy resources to produce meat in this way, they say.
Some groups have petitioned (请求) the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to better define the term “meat”. They want to know if we are buying the traditionally produced type or the cultured variety. Hopefully we will see some labeling guidelines on these products before they show up in grocery stores. And that may be a few years away. Regulatory issues and cost - the first lab-grown hamburger patty (肉饼) cost $330,000 (2274,900 yuan) - could delay the arrival of cultured meat.
