When was the last time you went to your local library? Last week? A month ago? A year ago?
For many reasons, borrowing books from libraries seems to be in decline. With advances in technology, it is now possible for people to download and read whatever they like on electronic devices such as Kindles. It has been argued that doing this is cheaper than buying hard-copy books. They are also lightweight, making them ideal for travelling.
Call me old fashioned, but I’ve never got into the e-books: I like to have printed books lining my bookshelves; I love the smell of a new book; and I enjoy leafing through paper pages — as long as I avoid the paper cuts!
So, I prefer paper books, and I also prefer to own them myself. Libraries only lend books, so what use are they to someone like me, or to someone who only reads electronic books?
Personally, I still love libraries. They offer a quiet space to sit, read, think, do research…a real escape from the outside world. When I was at university, I frequently spent hours at the library and borrowed numerous journals, articles and other printed materials, as it was just too expensive to buy brand new books every week. Libraries are free!
Libraries often organize a series of interesting activities as well. My local library hosted actors, historians and other speakers during the town’s annual art and literature festival. Well-known authors are also invited to libraries to give speeches or lead discussions about their work. Events such as these are a great way to appeal to people of all ages in the community and encourage the use of libraries.
There are still many fantastic ways to use libraries — maybe we just need to be more awake to them!

Besides the excitement of travel, one reason to study abroad is that you will experience new customs, holidays, foods, art, music, and politics firsthand.
“I learned the language and am now fluent, but perhaps what’s more important was how much I learned about cultures, people, and myself. I learned this from the viewpoint of an active member of the community and my host family, not from the tourist’s point of view,” says Andrew, who studied in Poitiers, France.
Another reason for studying abroad is that you’ll gain self-confidence. Christina studied in Caracas, Venezuela, a city of 10 million people and a huge change from her home town of 35,000! Christina says she learned how to better stand up for herself and her beliefs and to express herself in another language. What could make you more confident than that?
Living away from home can also help you adjust in the transition(过渡) to college and adulthood. Mathew says he returned from studying in Australia with confidence and a real interest in international affairs that made him different from his peers(同龄人). “After having gone abroad in high school, I found the transition to college to be a breeze –moving 560 miles from home didn’t seem particularly frightening after having lived thousands of miles away.”
Most of all, it’s fun while you’re studying in a different learning environment.
1.The passage is mainly about .
A.the benefits of studying abroad
B.living in a foreign country
C.the excitement of travel
D.learning a language
2.What did Andrew pay special attention to while studying abroad?
A.Host families. B.The foreign cultures.
C.Places of interest. D.Community problems.
3.The example of Christina mainly shows that studying abroad can .

C.increase our knowledge D.build our confidence
4.The underlined words “a breeze” in Paragraph 4 probably refer to .

Audiences who are present at music festivals often do not think about the work behind the scenes. There are many factors (因素)when organizers want to create a successful festival of any type. They have to make efforts to organize the music festival. They must spend a large amount of money bringing in popular artists, and the event must have excellent advertising. Once a site is chosen, it is often a space that is rented. Organizers must also take parking and crowd control into consideration when large audiences are expected to attend.
As a whole, a successful music festival combines all the necessary parts into a series of events that attract the audience. If any one part of the festival brings in a large number of complaints, it is not successful and the number of audiences will be down both that year and the following year. This is one of the reasons why organizers work hard to make sure every part of a festival functions as flawlessly as possible. They want people to take away great memories so they will attend the festival the next year and continue to do so. Organizers have long recognized this fact and take the time to find out what their audiences want. They recognize changes in audience moods and values. This allows their festivals to continue growing by satisfying their specific audiences.
The growth of many music festivals has caused organizers to seek out more modern musicians. Organizers don’t choose musicians that only perform for small crowds. Musicians, such as electric violinists or saxophone players, are more able to handle larger crowds who require amplified (放大的)music. Their ability to deal with technical aspects of greater sound production makes them popular with organizers. These musicians are also popular with large crowds who appreciate their ability to produce beautiful sound in the musical genre (流派)of the festival.
1.What does a successful music festival need?
A.Control of the number of audiences.
B.Money to buy a site.
C.Experienced audiences.
D.A great deal of organizers’ effort.
2.What does the underlined word "flawlessly" in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Perfect. B.Crazy. C.Quick. D.Limitless.
3.What kind of musicians will be popular with the organizer of a music festival?
A.Those who are members of a band.
B.Those who like performing for small crowds.
C.Those who can play the latest popular music.
D.Those who have the ability to handle larger crowds.
4.What can be the best title for the text?
A.The Origin of Music Festivals
B.The History of Music Festivals
C.The Organizers of Successful Music Festivals
D.The Factors in Successful Music Festivals
