On a bright, warm July afternoon, Mac Hollan, a primary school teacher, was cycling from his home to Alaska with his friends. One of his friends had stopped to make a bicycle repair, but they had encouraged Mac to carry on, and they would catch up with him soon. As Mac pedaled(骑行)along alone, he thought fondly of his wife and two young daughters at home. He hoped to show them this beautiful place someday.
Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him. “Man, that’s a big dog!” he thought. But when he looked to the side, he saw instantly that it was not a dog at all, but a wolf, quickly catching up with him.
Mac’s heart jumped. He found out his can of bear spray. With one hand on the bars, he fired the spray at the wolf. A bright red cloud enveloped the animal, and to Mac’s relief, it fell back, shaking its head. But a minute later, it was by his side again. Then it attacked the back of Mac’s bike, tearing open his tent bag. He fired at the wolf a second time, and again, it fell back only to quickly restart the chase.
Mac was pedaling hard now. He waved and yelled at passing cars but was careful not to slow down. He saw a steep uphill climb before him. He knew that once he hit the hill, he’d be easy caught up and the wolfs teeth would be tearing into his flesh. .
At this moment, Paul and Becky were driving their car on their way to Alaska. They did not think much of it when they saw two cyclist repairing their bike on the side of the road. A bit later, they spotted what they, too, assumed was a dog running alongside a man on a bike. As they got closer, they realized that the dog was a wolf. Mac heard a large vehicle behind him. He pulled in front of it as the wolf was catching up fast, just a dozen yards away now.

Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents’ home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station (加油站) about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register (收银台), I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.
I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend’s. We chatted on the way to the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.
I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holiday meaningful.
Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In the late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I’d left the lights on all day, and the battery (电池) was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership— a shop selling cars— was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.
I entered the shop, and one of the salesmen came to me, ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Megan is a bright and curious little girl, as most children at age eight. When walking she looks up, down, or sideways, never where she's going. One day, she spotted, partly covered by leaves and litter, a $100 bill. She looked to see if anyone was watching and bent down to crumple(弄皱)the bill in her tiny hand. Sliding it into her jacket pocket, she took another guilty look and then hurried off to school.
Her day was spent watching her jacket hung on the wall by the door. During lunch, she took it off and ran to the far side of the playground to pull out the crumpled bill and stare at it and see that it was real and belonged to her. When some older kids wandered by, she put it back into her pocket quickly and rushed back into the classroom.
It wasn't until she was riding home on the school bus that she started to wonder about who the bill had belonged to before it came to be hers. "Probably somebody rich, "she thought. "Why else would he be so careless with $ 100 bills? "
She imagined a tall man in a fine wool jacket walking to his big car and pulling out a roll of money, not noticing one bill drifting(飘)to the ground. Putting the roll back in his pocket, he climbed into his car and drove away. Just then, a wind blew some leaves to cover most of the lost bill.
But, then she thought, what if the bill had been a present for his little niece with her grandma because her parents were killed in a car crash? She'd have treasured that $ 100 bill because it came from her generous uncle. And she'd be dreaming, even now if she hadn't realized she'd lost it, of all the toys and treats that the bill could buy. She could use it to buy a present for her grandmother. She would be heartbroken to find she'd lost that $ 100 bill.

George's mother was very poor and was sick. Instead of having bright fires in winter, she had nothing to burn but dry sticks, which George picked up from under the trees.
One fine day in July, his sick mother sent him to the woods. He was to stay there all day, to get as much wood as he could collect.
It was a bright, sunny day, and George worked very hard, so that by the time the sun was high, he was hot, and wished for a cool place where he might rest and eat his dinner. While he hunted for a spot about the bank he saw among the grass some fine, wild strawberries.
"How good these will be with my bread and butter!" thought George Lining his cap with leaves, he set to work eagerly to gather all he could find, and then seated himself by the river.
It was a pleasant place, and George felt happy and satisfied. He thought how much his mother would like to see him there, and to be there herself, instead of in her dark room in the village.
George thought of all this, and just as he was lifting the first strawberry to his mouth, he said to himself. "How much Mum would like these!" and he stopped, and put the strawberry back again. "Shall I save them for her?" said he, thinking how much they would refresh her, yet still looking at them with a longing(渴望的) eye.
"I will eat half , and take the other half to her", said he at last, and he divided them into two heaps(堆). But each heap looked so small, that he put them together again.
"I will only taste one." thought he. As he again lifted it to his mouth, he saw that he had taken the finest and he put it back. "I will keep them all for her." said he with great happiness, and he covered them up nicely ready to take home.
