Are the lives of city kids the same as those in villages? In lots of ways, they are very different. But what are the differences?
Hu Peng and his four friends decided to find them out. Earlier this month, they went to live for a week at Huagui Village near Xishui. They went door to door there and asked kids there lots of questions. They wanted to learn more about village kids’ everyday lives, so they asked questions like these: Do your parents teach you how to do housework? How much money do you usually spend on dinner? What would you do if a thief comes into your houses? They also asked 150 city kids the same question.
On April 12, the team gave a report to their class. They told about lots of differences between children’s lives in cities and those in villages. The biggest difference is independence. Hu’s team say that more than 60 percent of city kids can’t do much housework, but more than 80 percent of village kids can care for themselves.
City kids told Hu they cared about school a lot, and they had no time to wash clothes or make their beds. Village kids said they helped their parents with a lot: they cook, clean houses and feed farm animals, Hu’s team also saw that village kids had less pocket money. Many never use computers. They play in rivers or on mountains. Some don’t really like to make new friends.
Hu’s team said their trip gave them more self-confidence(自信心) because they were doing something by them-selves. But it also worried them a bit because they saw they still had a lot to learn. “When we grow up, our parents can’t take care of us,” Hu said. “We have to learn to take care of ourselves. ”

Arog and Brog are two frogs. They had lived in a village all their lives. They thought they would like to go and see the big city that was about ten miles away.
They talked about it for a long time, and at last they set off to see the city.
It was a hot day, and they soon began to feel tired. They had only gone a little way when Arog said to Brog, "We must be nearly there. Can you see the city?"
"No," said Brog, "but if I climb up on your back I might be able to see it."
So Brog climbed up on Arog's back to see the city.
Now when Brog put up his head, his eyes could only see what was behind, and not what was in front. So he saw the village they had just left.
"Can you see the city?" asked the frog who was below.

North American black bears are shy animals. They are fearful by nature, and will usually run away if they see or hear people. Because of this, it can be difficult for scientists to learn about these animals.
In order to study black bears, researchers from New Jersey, USA, catch bears and use drugs(毒品)to help them go to sleep. Researchers then work out the size and the weight of the bear, take blood to test for diseases(疾病), remove a tooth and take it to the lab to find out its age. From these studies, researchers want to find out how many bears live in New Jersey, how long they live, and how many babies they produce.
But in Minnesota, USA, researchers study bears that are completely awake. The bears know the researchers’ voices and they are not afraid of the research team. With the help of a few grapes to keep the bears busy, researchers can touch them to check their hearts, look at their teeth, and do other jobs. Researchers can also walk or sit with bears for hours and make videos to learn about their everyday lives.
In both places, the main purpose is the same— to make sure there is a healthy population of black bears. But the research methods and the kinds of information that researchers are able to collect are quite different.
1.In the first paragraph, we can learn that North American black bears are ______.
A.shy and fearful animals B.not found today
C.well known to scientists D.not afraid of people
2.The word “remove” in the second paragraph probably means ________.
A.pull out B.clean up C.fix up D.pick out
3.Which of the following is NOT included in the New Jersey studies on bears?
A.The age.
B.The way of their communication.
C.The weight.
D.The number of babies they produce.
4.What do the two studies have in common?
A.Research places. B.The main purpose.
