PAssionArts Festival
PAssionArts Festival this year will run from 6 July to 25 August, bringing community arts to 250,000 residents across Singapore. The festival theme, “Our Home, Our HeARTs”, invites residents to use arts to express our love for our community and for Singapore.
Our aim is to bring residents together to experience and appreciate creativity. Look forward to over 500 arts activities and programmes, including visual art displays and performing arts co-created by residents and artists. The following are some of them.
ARTS PARTY @ TELOK BLANGAH
TIME: 14 July (9:00 AM—12:00 AM)
PLACE: Talok Blangah Mall
Art can happen in so many ways and for so many people—and that is what Arts Party @ Telok Blangah will show you this July!
For example, you can participate in the large oil painting activity to complete a huge oil painting art. Or carry art in your pocket anytime and anywhere by creating your own matchbox art.
We’re also bringing art therapy to the elderly as it becomes more popular in our society. Come explore Nagomi art, a Japanese art healing method that introduces calm and relaxation to the painter.
HUES IN TUNE
TIME: 20 July (2:00 PM—8:00 PM)
PLACE: Kampung Admiralty
One of the most expected part is Hues in Tune’s performance line-up. Sembawang Hues is the highlight with music performances. Fusion Tunes features cross-racial bands, and Our Own Tune presents heartfelt music by talented residents. Come to this festival village!
L.O.U.D @ KAMPONG GLAM TIME: 27 July (7:30 PM—9:30 PM)

At Kampong Glam, the theatre performance Voices from the Belly of Carp will take us back centuries into Singapore’s history for new discoveries.
MAD TEA PARTY

ARTISTS: Stacy Huang, Jesse Chong and Lena Lok
Mad Tea Party is inspired by Alice in Wonderland. This will be an installation of delightful treats, where residents can gather around the tea table to create “food” together.

Visiting a festival abroad can be a great reason to travel and a way to experience different cultures. These days there is such a number of choices that it’s possible to spend the whole summer watching live music in exciting places. Of course, it’s also a chance to meet people from across the world.
Melt! Festival, Germany
This festival takes place on the site of an open air museum for industrial machinery. There’s also a lake which can be used for swimming when it’s hot. This year’s line-up has over 120 different bands (乐队). Around 90% of the people attending the festival are German providing a perfect chance to practise speaking the language.
Exit Festival, Serbia
Set on the banks of the Danube in an old fortress (城堡), the festival began as a way to show people’s dissatisfaction with the government. These days it’s less political (政治的) but still worries about people who are poor, ill, old, etc and tries to help them. This year’s festival will host many famous bands. From electronic music and dance music to hard rock, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival, Scotland
Set on a Scottish estate (庄园) near Inverness, this year Belladrum will welcome artists from around the world. The most enjoyable part of the weekend is the ceilidh (traditional Scottish dance and party) which is always a lively event. It doesn’t even matter if you’re a beginner because the band teaches you each dance.
Open’er Festival, Poland
Held in an airfield near the northern city of Gdansk, each year Open’er has a seriously good selection of bands. This year is no exception, with many famous bands set to play. Not only are there amazing artists, but both Poland and the festival itself also provide very excellent value for money.

Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival
Where: Becket, Massachusetts
When: June 15-Aug. 24
Each summer, this influential dance center presents a number of classes and performances by more than 50 companies from around the world. Highlights (最精彩的部分) this season include the Dance Theater of Harlem's production of Alvin Ailey's “The Lark Ascending”, which opens the festival.

Moab Music Festival
Where: Moab, Utah
When: Aug. 29-Sept. 9
This area is better known for mountain biking than for music. But since 1992, it has hosted a private festival that brings classical, jazz, Latin and other types of music to the land. This year there will be 16 concerts, including three “Grotto Concerts”, where guests take a 45-minute boat ride down the Colorado River to performances.

Cheyenne Frontier Days
Where: Cheyenne, Wyoming
When: July 19-28
There's something for everyone at this 117-year-old festival, from an “Indian village” and Old West museum to country concerts. But the competition is still the main attraction, with cowboys and cowgirls competing for major money in the world's largest outdoor stage.

The Glimmerglass Festival
Where: Cooperstown, New York
When: July 6-Aug. 24
Each summer, opera lovers from around the country (and the world) travel to upstate New York to watch productions that include stars like Nathan Gunn and Ginger Costa-Jackson. This year's performances include Wagner's “The Flying Dutchman” and Verdi's “King for a Day”, in honor of the 200th birthdays of both composers (作曲家).

Most cultures have a festival of light. Each culture celebrates this festival in a different way. There is one thing that is the same, however, and this is the wish for peace and happiness in the world.
The Jewish Festival of Light is called Hanukkah. Hanukkah usually takes place in December. The story of why Hanukkah is celebrated is very old. It takes place on the 15th day of the Chinese New Year, bringing the New Year season to a close. During the festival, parks become a sea of lanterns. Sometimes streets are blocked off and lanterns are put down on each side to make a hallway of lanterns. People also hang lanterns in their gardens, outside their houses or on boats. The lanterns are made in many shapes, sizes and colours. They are usually made from silk, paper and plastic. Some are even made from ice. It is believed that these lanterns will guide visitors and the spirits of ancestors to the celebrations. The Lantern Festival is a time for families, young and old to spend together. Every year, as Spring Festival draws near, most Chinese people will get excited to make preparation for the most important festival and make plan for the winter break. It is a little like Christmas in the United States, but there are some differences between the two festivals.
Both the major Chinese and the major Western holidays come during the cold season, and special food is expected. In western countries, cookies and cakes begin just after Thanksgiving in November and show up everywhere. Turkey, potatoes and other food come later. Similar thing happens in China.
