  1. Scientists around the world are striving for effective detection of cancer in the early stages, which is a group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body, and a Chinese scientist may have found a quick way of knowing whether malignant tumors(恶性肿瘤)exist in a patient's body, with just one drop of blood.

Malignant tumors in early phases can be cured. However,it's extremely difficult to be aware of cancer in its early stages,as patients don't show obvious symptoms and thus it can only be found in its later stages, which is already too late,so to detect cancer early remains a global challenge for scientists.

Back in 1989,scientists have found a kind of heat shock proteins (HSP),named Hsp90α,which existed in human bodies and can be used as a cancer biomarker detection kit.Scientists around the globe have been working on it since then, and more than 10,000 journals have been published on accredited magazines, yet no one has actually turned their research results into medical products.

However,Luo Yongzhang and his team in Tsinghua University's School of Life Sciences in Beijing seemed to have cracked the code, after working on the problem since 2009.The team has produced an artificial Hsp90α protein for clinical use that gains structural stability by regrouping proteins. The test kit can diagnose multiple kinds of cancer by analyzing a drop of human blood. This means they are able to "create" the protein,in any quantity, and at any time they wish to.

The kit has since been used in clinical trials involving 2,347 patients at eight hospitals in China. It was the first clinical trial in the world to test if the protein could be a useful tumor biomarker for lung cancer, and it succeeded. Now,the kit has been approved to enter the Chinese and European markets,24 years after Hsp90α was discovered.

1.Why is cancer hard to cure?

    A. Malignant tumors are found too late.

    B. Malignant tumors spread too quickly.

    C. Its symptoms are shown in early stages.

    D. No proper treatment can be applied to it.

2.What do we learn about Hsp90α from Paragraph 3?

    A. It was created by scientists in 1989.

    B. All magazines have covered the topic.

    C. There has been a medical product about it.

    D. It can serve as a cancer detection approach.

3.How does the Chinese kit diagnose cancer?

    A. By regrouping proteins.

    B. By cracking cancer’s code.

    C. By breaking down one drop of blood.

    D. By producing an artificial Hsp90α protein.

4.It can be inferred that a European with lung cancer in early phases .

    A. can’t be cured in the end

    B. can be diagnosed with it in time

    C. has to be examined in China

    D. expects the kit to come into the market

  3. I drove a taxi for extra money east of Toronto thirty years ago. Each time a taxi drove up to the front of the Greenwood Racetrack, a group of local kids would run along the sidewalk angling for position by the passenger door. One lucky kid, or rather, the most aggressive one, would open the passenger door and say “Good luck, Mister!” The man getting out of the cab would vaguely say thanks and throw the kid a quarter. It was a routine everybody knew.

Throughout the summer, one kid caught my eye. He was bigger than most of all the other kids but pushed away by even the smallest. He never made it but never gave up. One day, his chance arrived. As I was pulling up to the sidewalk, all the kids were pushing for a cab just ahead of mine. The boy saw me and walked toward my taxi. As I positioned the passenger door right beside him, he never paused and opened the passenger door, warmly saying, “Good luck, Mister!”

But the man neither said thanks nor flipped him a quarter. He pushed him aside so hard that the boy fell on the sidewalk. I knew it hurt him badly. I got out in less than 10 seconds, but the man was gone in the crowd. So I looked for the kid. I decided to give him $20 for the effort. By the time I spotted him he was far up ahead, walking away in the opposite direction through the crowd and his head hanging down. When I got the cab turned around I lost sight of him. I never saw him again. I’d like to find him one day and tell him that if only he had stuck around a little longer I would have given him a whole $20.

I learned from this kid that when things seem so hopeless that you are ready to give up, it’s the time when things are most likely to turn around for you.

1.What can we learn from the first paragraph?

    A. The passenger was ready to give a tip to the kid.

    B. The author was a professional taxi driver at that time.

    C. The lucky child was the toughest among the local kids.

    D. The driver would work with and benefit from those children.

2.Why did the kid never succeed in opening the passenger door?

    A. He was modest. B. He was the shortest.

    C. He made no effort. D. He pushed his way.

3.Why did the author get out of his taxi?

    A. To catch up with the kid.

    B. To encourage the disappointed kid.

    C. To give the kid some money.

    D. To intend to demand the tip for the kid.

4.According to the passage, which goes with the author’s intention?

    A. Never give in to difficulties. B. Sunshine comes after a storm.

    C. Face up to competitions. D. Each road leads to Rome.

  4. Procter & Gamble (P&G), one of the world’s biggest marketers, has announced a change in the way it buys advertising on Facebook. It has started cutting its spend on highly targeted ads and increasing its spend on ads that address much larger numbers of the potential audiences for its brands, which include Tide, Pampers and Gillette. Explaining this change of emphasis, P&G’s global brand building officer, Marc Pritchard, said, “We targeted too much, and went too narrow.”

Facebook’s astonishing income growth comes, in part, from its ability to deliver micro-targeted audiences(推送精准目标受众)to advertisers, and P&G in fact admits that it has wasted millions of dollars in the misguided pursuit of effectiveness.

Facebook used to be irresistible to advertisers. It presents advertisers this question: Instead of sending your message to millions in a television ad, why not use data to reach only those you need to reach? But as many people may have noticed, making perfectly targeted ads appears to be much harder than it sounds. Most digital ads are easily ignored. Information about consumers is not the same as insight into human beings.

The more fundamental problem with micro-targeting is that for big brands, advertising has never really been about messages—even brand owners have never quite realized it. It is about the creation of shared memories, triggered at the point of purchase. Think about some of the great brands: Nike, Apple, and yes, Pampers. If you buy them, it is because you know millions of others do, and because they seem to stand for something that, far from being unique to you, is common to all of us: achievement, creativity, and nurturing. The broader these brands go, the better they do.

When a consumer reaches for something on the shelf, they usually reach for the familiar. To achieve that status, a brand needs to have done something that lots of people regularly see, notice and enjoy. What seemed to be the wastefulness of TV was in fact its secret sauce. By reaching large numbers of people at the same time, TV ads had the power to turn brands into cultural icons, which took up consumers’ minds.

In its conversations with advertisers, Facebook now talks less about targeting, preferring to emphasize the large number of consumers that it can help brands to reach. It is investing in video functions and is encouraging its clients to make short films. After years of telling clients TV is wasteful, it is now doing a good job of imitating it.

1.Which of the following contributes to P&G’s strategy change?

    A. The rise of digital media. B. The high cost of targeted ads.

    C. The limitations of micro-targeting. D. The reduction of targeted advertising.

2.It can be learned that Facebook has already ________.

    A. stopped delivering micro-targeted audience to advertisers

    B. been faced with the challenge of slowing income growth

    C. been blamed for its ineffective ads

    D. lost its attraction towards P&G

    3.According to Paragraph 4, micro-targeting is problematic with ________.

    A. delivering messages B. building common values

    C. creating unique experiences D. triggering the purchasing desire

4.What’s the author’s attitude towards Facebook’s opinion about TV ads?

    A. Tolerance. B. Approval. C. Doubt. D. Hesitancy.

七选五 共 1 题
  1. Asking for a raise can be a discouraging prospect for any employee. 1. If you’re a female employee seeking a raise, it matters to approach that conversation strategically. Here are a few tips for pulling it off successfully.

    Do your research.

    2. So if you’re making a case for a pay increase, you’ll need to gather some data on what others in similar positions are earning. To that end, do some research on sites like Salary.com. 3. Remember to collect the average earnings for all workers in your position and make your case for why you deserve to be paid similarly.

    Don’t get emotional.

Women are often accused of getting emotional on the job. In fact, it’s that so-called sensitive nature that causes some people to claim they’re uncomfortable working with and promoting female employees. That’s why it’s extremely important to keep you cool during a salary negotiation. Be specific and present hard evidence of your value to the company. Try to focus on your positive contributions, rather than the negative feelings. And although the discussion might get heated, be sure not to yell or, worse yet, cry while it’s going down. 4.

    5.

Given many news stories about how men out-earn women, you may tend to draw on some of that data as a reason for getting a raise. But be very careful about using that argument, because unless you have definitive proof that your male colleagues - with the same exact titles, experience, and responsibilities — are making more money than you, you’re better off avoiding that angle.

    A. Don’t accuse your employer.

    B. Staying calm will only help your case.

    C. Take advantage of how much men colleagues earn.

    D. It’s never a good idea to go into a salary negotiation blindly.

    E. You are often paid less salary than your workmates in similar positions.

    F. But women face unique challenges when it comes to requesting more money.

    G. They allow you to search for compensation info based on industry and geographic region.
