Scientists around the world are striving for effective detection of cancer in the early stages, which is a group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body, and a Chinese scientist may have found a quick way of knowing whether malignant tumors(恶性肿瘤)exist in a patient's body, with just one drop of blood.
Malignant tumors in early phases can be cured. However,it's extremely difficult to be aware of cancer in its early stages,as patients don't show obvious symptoms and thus it can only be found in its later stages, which is already too late,so to detect cancer early remains a global challenge for scientists.
Back in 1989,scientists have found a kind of heat shock proteins (HSP),named Hsp90α,which existed in human bodies and can be used as a cancer biomarker detection kit.Scientists around the globe have been working on it since then, and more than 10,000 journals have been published on accredited magazines, yet no one has actually turned their research results into medical products.
However,Luo Yongzhang and his team in Tsinghua University's School of Life Sciences in Beijing seemed to have cracked the code, after working on the problem since 2009.The team has produced an artificial Hsp90α protein for clinical use that gains structural stability by regrouping proteins. The test kit can diagnose multiple kinds of cancer by analyzing a drop of human blood. This means they are able to "create" the protein,in any quantity, and at any time they wish to.
The kit has since been used in clinical trials involving 2,347 patients at eight hospitals in China. It was the first clinical trial in the world to test if the protein could be a useful tumor biomarker for lung cancer, and it succeeded. Now,the kit has been approved to enter the Chinese and European markets,24 years after Hsp90α was discovered.
1.Why is cancer hard to cure?
A. Malignant tumors are found too late.
B. Malignant tumors spread too quickly.
C. Its symptoms are shown in early stages.
D. No proper treatment can be applied to it.
2.What do we learn about Hsp90α from Paragraph 3?
A. It was created by scientists in 1989.
B. All magazines have covered the topic.
C. There has been a medical product about it.
D. It can serve as a cancer detection approach.
3.How does the Chinese kit diagnose cancer?
A. By regrouping proteins.
B. By cracking cancer’s code.
C. By breaking down one drop of blood.
D. By producing an artificial Hsp90α protein.
4.It can be inferred that a European with lung cancer in early phases .

Scientists from around the world examined whether supplements marketed are good for brain health, particularly in those aged over 50. Despite the claims of some supplements that they could improve cognitive (认知的)skills, no clear evidence was found to back this up.
The report said, "For the handful that have been researched, several well-designed studies of supplements for brain health found no benefit in people with normal nutrient levels. It's unclear whether people who lack nutrition can benefit their brains by taking a supplement. The pills failed to protect against dementia (痴呆)and did not slow the process or improve the symptoms of the disease and the report said that a healthy diet rich in fruit and vegetables, being physically active and getting sufficient sleep were linked to better brain function. ”
The value of the food supplement market in Britain is expected to reach more than £1 billion by 2012 and supplements sold on the high street for brain performance cost up to £26 for 60 pills. And Caroline Abrahams, the charity director at Age UK said that people were better off spending money to improve diets.
The report did find evidence suggesting that supplements could benefit people diagnosed with lacking vitamin. It added that these should only be taken if advised by a doctor because some supplements could interact with medicines or contain high levels of nutrients, which could be deadly. Supplements were not strictly controlled in the way that medicines were and may not contain high-quality ingredients or what was on the label, the report said.
The Health Food Manufacturers' Association, which represents the British supplement industry, said that the report was based on the American market. In Britain products could only make claims approved by the European Food Safety Authority, such as the zinc (锌)contributed to normal cognitive functions, a spokesman said.
1.What is the finding of the scientists about the supplements?
A.They bring about no positive effect. B.They break the balance of normal life.
C.They get people to get addicted to them. D.They are hardly suitable for the younger.
2.The author uses the third paragraph to show people should .
A.be aware of their needs clearly B.change their daily diets regularly
C.take control of the market strictly D.make use of their money properly
3.What should people do if they do need to take supplements?
A.Follow professional suggestions.
B.Be sure of the vitamins they lack.
C.Refer to the instructions of the labels.
D.Avoid taking together with other medicines.
4.What do the British authorities think of the report?
A.Annoying. B.Unacceptable.
C.Worrying. D.Favorable.

The British people are famous for being quite reserved(保守的). We are known around the world for having the biggest "personal 1 "? the distance between us and the person we are 2 to. Preparations are underway around the world for Chinese New Year (Feb 19) and celebrations in China will be mirrored across the planet wherever the Chinese Diaspora (华侨) calls home. Here are some Chinatowns for those outside of China wishing to mark the day.
London
Although it may not be as large or as long-built as others, having only become a center for the Chinese community during the 1950s, London's Chinatown is a perfectly formed little firework that knows how to see in the year with a bang. Decorated with red lanterns (灯笼), previous years have seen shows with acrobatics (杂技), martial arts (武术), dance and opera nearby.
San Francisco
San Francisco's Chinatown is perhaps the most famous in the United States. The city was the main entry-point for Chinese who had crossed the Pacific to the USA during the early 19th century. Between the Grant Avenue and the Stockton Street, this historic area is a local treasure, attracting more visitors per year than the Golden Gate Bridge.
Bangkok
With a more than 100-year-old history, the Thai capital's Chinatown contains complex streets offering all kinds of tasty treats, clothes, toys and antiques. Sunday market days are such a good time to get the full atmosphere of the neighborhood. The area is also known for its gold dealers, whose shops line the road.
Mauritius
Found in Port Louis, this Mauritian Chinatown shows the island nation's rich multicultural diversity. Established in the early years of the 20th century by settlers from China, its tiny shops and restaurants serve locals and visitors. During the Chinese Spring Festival, the most exciting sight is the Dragon Dances on Rue Royale when Chinese musicians and dancers perform the traditional Lion dances through the streets.

Scientists are making new studies of color and its effects on our health. They have known for a long time that the color of a room or the color of the light in it can affect our feelings and emotions. Many prisons and hospitals have at least one room that is painted pink. Officials have found that light and color can produce physical changes in our bodies.
Professor Falfan worked with a group of 9 disabled children at school in Albert. Two of the children were blind. The other seven had normal sight. The scientists changed the color of the school room, and then looked for changes in blood pressure, heart beat and breathing rate. The effects of color changes were the same for the blind children as for those with normal sight. Their blood pressure dropped from about 120 to 100. Similar changes were reported in heart-beat and the breathing. The children were also calmer and less excited. Then the colors of the room were returned to orange and white. Blood pressure, heart-beat and breathing rate went up and the children became excited again.
Professor Falfan said different colors produce different levels of light energy. He said the differences seem to affect chemicals in the brain that carry messages from nerve to nerve and from nerve to muscle.

Scientists around the world have been studying the warming of waters in the Pacific Ocean known as El Nino. The appearance of El Nino is known to affect the weather around the world. Scientists still do not completely understand it. Yet they now find they can use it to tell about the future in different areas of the world.
One example is the work of two scientists at Columbia University in New York, Mark Cane and Gordon Eshel. A scientist of Zimbabwe(津巴布韦), Roger Buckland worked with them. They have found that when El Nino appears, Zimbabwe has little or no rain. This means corn crops in Zimbabwe are poor. The last El Nino was in 1991 to 1993. That was when southeastern Africa suffered a serious lack of rain.
The scientists wrote about their recent work in the publication Nature. Their computer program can tell when an El Nino will develop up to a year before it does. They suggest that this could provide an effective early warning system for southern Africa, and could prevent many people from starving.
1.El Nino is known as ________.
A. the changing of the weather in southern Africa
B. the weather which brings drought (旱灾) to Africa
C. the warming of waters in the Pacific Ocean
D. the weather phenomenon that brings heavy rains to Africa
2.Scientists study El Nino in order that ________.
A. they can put all this information into their computers
B. they can tell why Zimbabwe has little or no rain
C. they can do some research work in this field
D. they can provide a kind of early warning to the place that will suffer from drought
3.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Scientists come to understand how El Nino appears.
B. Three scientists from the USA work on this subject.
C. El Nino has something to do with Zimbabwe’s poor crops.
D. Southern Africa suffered a serious drought and many people died from hunger.
