  1. Passport control

If you are arriving at London Heathrow Airport and are not transferring to another flight outside Britain or Northern Ireland, you must pass through Passport Control and Customs immediately after leaving your plane. If you are not Britain or a citizen of the European Community(欧共体),you must fill out a special form before your passport is examined. This form is called a landing card and should be given to you during the flight to London.

If you have only hand luggage, go directly through the Baggage Reclaim Area to the Customs.

Information about Duty Free allowance can found on special notice – boards in the Baggage Reclaim Area. 2. f cars had wings, they could fly and that just might happen, beginning in 2011.The company Terrafugia, based in Woburn, Massachusetts, says it plans to deliver its car-plane, the Transition, to customers by the end of 2011.

“It’s the next‘wow’vehicle,”said Terrafugia vice president Richard Gersh.“Anybody can buy a Ferrari, but as we say, Ferraris don’t fly.”

The car plane has wings that unfold for flying—a process the company says takes one minute—and fold back up for driving.A runway is still required to take off and land.

The Transition is being marketed more as a plane that drives than a car that flies, although it is both. The company has been working with FAA to meet aircraft regulations, and with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to meet vehicle safety regulations.

The company is aiming to sell the Transition to private pilots as a more convenient and cheaper way to fly. They say it saves you the trouble from trying to find another mode of transportation to get to and from airports: You drive the car to the airport and then you’re good to go.When you land, you fold up the wings and hit the road. There are no expensive parking fees because you don’t have to store it at an airport—you park it in the garage at home.

The car-plane is designed to fly primarily under 10,000 feet.It has a maximum takeoff weight of 1,430 pounds, including fuel and passengers.Terrafugia says the Transition reduces the potential for an accident by allowing pilots to drive under bad weather instead of flying into marginal(临界)conditions.

The Transition’s price tag: $194,000, But there may be additional charges for options like a radio, transponder or GPS.Another option is a full-plane parachute.

“If you get into a very awful situation, itis the necessary safety option,”Gersh said.

So far,the company has more than 70 orders with deposits.“We’re working very closely with them, but there are still some remaining steps,”Brown said.

1.We can learn from the first paragraph that .

  3. Maybe you are aware that the latest job markets news isn’t promising: Unemployment is still more than 9 percent, and new job growth has fallen close to zero, which is bad for economy, of course. And it may be especially discouraging if you happen to be looking for a job or hoping to change careers right now. But it actually shouldn’t matter to you nearly as much as you think.

That’s because job growth numbers don’t matter to job hunters as much as job turnover data. After all, existing jobs open up every day due to promotions, resignations, terminations, and retirements. In both good times and bad, turnover creates more openings than economic growth does. Even in June of 2007, when the economy was still falling along, job growth was only 132,000, while turnover was 4.7 million!

And as it turns out, even today — with job growth near zero — over 4 million job hunters are being hired every month.

I don’t mean to imply that overall job growth doesn’t have an impact on one’s ability to land a job. It’s true that if total employment were higher, it would mean more jobs for all of us to choose from. And it’s true that there are currently more people applying for each available job opening, regardless of whether it’s a new one or not.

But what often distinguishes those who land jobs from those who don’t is their ability to stay motivated. They’re willing to do the hard work of identifying their valuable skills; be creative about where and how to look; learn how to present themselves to potential employers; and keep going, even after repeated rejections. The Bureau of Labor Statistics data showed that 2.7 million people who wanted and were available for work hadn’t looked for a job within the last four weeks and were no longer even classified as unemployed.

So don’t let the headlines fool you into giving up. Four million people get hired every month in the U.S. You can be one of them.

1.The author tends to believe that high unemployment rate _______.

    A. causes many people to lose job opportunities

    B. should not stop people from looking for a job

    C. prevents many people from changing careers

    D. does not mean the U.S. economy is worsening

2.Where do most job openings come from?

    A. Job growth. B. Business expansion.

    C. Improved economy. D. Job turnover.

3.What does the author say about overall job growth?

    A. It increases people’s confidence in the economy.

    B. It doesn’t have much effect on individual job seekers.

    C. It gives a ray of hope to the unemployed.

    D. It doesn’t mean greater job security for the employed.

4.What is the key to landing a job according to the author?

    A. Never giving up. B. Being intelligent.

    C. Being educated. D. Being experienced.

5.What do we learn from the passage about the unemployment figures in the US?

    A. They clearly indicate how healthy the economy is.

    B. They provide the public with the latest information.

    C. They don’t include those who have stopped looking for a job.

    D. They warn of the structural problems in the economy.

  1. Every parent wants his or her children to grow up loving life. But we don’t always know how to encourage this. Here are a few tips to help you guide your child to a joyful life.

    Teach gratitude

Help your children appreciate the everyday wonders of life by stopping what you are doing and expressing thanks for the moment. Whether it is the chance to play ball in the park together, or watch a beautiful sunset, express gratitude and your child will follow your example. Doctors say that when parents show gratitude, their children grow up, more enthusiastic, joyful, interested, and engaged in the world around them.

    Help your child handle frustration

When your child complains that he can’t do something, like finishing a puzzle or tying his shoes, don’t try to convince him that he can. Rather, show patience and say, “That’s okay. There’s no rush. When you want to try again, let me know.” The child is then likely to come back to the task, a few minutes later.

    Follow your child’s interests

Happy people are often those who have mastered a skill. For example, when your child practices throwing a ball to you, she learns from her mistakes, she learns persistence and discipline, and she experiences the joy of succeeding due to her own efforts. She also experiences the joy of recognition for this accomplishment. Most importantly, she discovers she has some control over her life. This feeling of control through mastery is an important factor in determining adult happiness.

Teach your child to do meaningful things

As your child gets older, teach her how satisfying it can be to help others. Research shows that people who have meaning in their lives feel less depressed. Working for a charity and helping others can help make life more meaningful. Even young children can benefit from this lesson. Even helping out with simple household chores can help your child feel that she is making a contribution.
