Every parent wants his or her children to grow up loving life. But we don’t always know how to encourage this. Here are a few tips to help you guide your child to a joyful life.
Teach gratitude
Help your children appreciate the everyday wonders of life by stopping what you are doing and expressing thanks for the moment. Whether it is the chance to play ball in the park together, or watch a beautiful sunset, express gratitude and your child will follow your example. Doctors say that when parents show gratitude, their children grow up, more enthusiastic, joyful, interested, and engaged in the world around them.
Help your child handle frustration
When your child complains that he can’t do something, like finishing a puzzle or tying his shoes, don’t try to convince him that he can. Rather, show patience and say, “That’s okay. There’s no rush. When you want to try again, let me know.” The child is then likely to come back to the task, a few minutes later.
Follow your child’s interests
Happy people are often those who have mastered a skill. For example, when your child practices throwing a ball to you, she learns from her mistakes, she learns persistence and discipline, and she experiences the joy of succeeding due to her own efforts. She also experiences the joy of recognition for this accomplishment. Most importantly, she discovers she has some control over her life. This feeling of control through mastery is an important factor in determining adult happiness.
Teach your child to do meaningful things
As your child gets older, teach her how satisfying it can be to help others. Research shows that people who have meaning in their lives feel less depressed. Working for a charity and helping others can help make life more meaningful. Even young children can benefit from this lesson. Even helping out with simple household chores can help your child feel that she is making a contribution.

Dear daughters,
Most parents tell their children, “You can be anything you want when you grow up.” I feel the same and I say this often. But I also want you to understand that realizing your dreams comes from hard work, some good luck and good timing. Here are some words of wisdom for you as you make your way in the world, from an entrepreneur (企业家) and from your mama.
1. Be open-minded to changing your path along the way
In high school, I wanted to be a politician. I left my hometown and went off to college in Washington, DC. There, I discovered that I loved to support women. It taught me that I’m creative, a strong leader and great at marketing. As a result, I moved on to be the head of a national healthcare nonprofit. Becoming a mother while in that job opened my mind to launching a breast pump bag (储奶袋) business. Now I run a highly successful company that I started up on my own. I'm not a politician!
2.Failure is critical to your success
Failure can be heartbreaking. But I will tell you that every failure I’ve had along the way has absolutely made me better. Failing the big math exam in high school and going to summer school was embarrassing. I eventually passed, and I’ve never failed an exam again. I learned from that experience to ask for help. Now, I ask for help in business all the time. I’m proud to be a role model to you as a mom and an entrepreneur. I hope I inspire you to believe that you can be anything you want. It will be my pleasure to watch your lives unfold before my eyes.
Love,
Your mom

Dear daughters,
Most parents tell their children, “You can be anything you want when you grow up.” I feel the same and I say this often. But I also want you to understand that a dream itself comes from hard work, some good luck and good timing. Girls, here are some words of wisdom as you make your way in the world.
Firstly, be open-minded to changing your path along the way. In high school, I wanted to be a politician. I left my hometown and went off to college in Washington, D.C. There, I discovered that I loved to support women. It taught me that I’m creative, a strong leader and great at marketing. As a result, I moved on to be the head of a national healthcare nonprofit(非营利机构).Becoming a mother while in that job opened my mind to launching a breast pump bag business. Now I run a highly successful company that I started up on my own. In my opinion, you need to figure out what you are good at and what you are passionate about. Keep an open mind: the initial path you choose may lead you into other areas. Don’t waste your money or time, but you can change what you are doing based on what you are learning about yourself.
Secondly and more importantly, remember that failure is vital to your success. I won’t tell you to feel good about failure. Failure can be heartbreaking. But I will tell you that every failure I’ve had along the way absolutely made me better. Failing the math exam in high school and going to summer school was embarrassing but I've never failed an exam again.
Being deprived(剥夺) of the job for a significant job opportunity that I was more than qualified for because of unfair assumptions hurt me but I went out and got a big job at a national organization at age 27. It’s okay to get angry! Take that and turn it into positive action.
I’m proud to be a role model to you as a mom and an entrepreneur(企业家). I hope I inspire you to believe that you can be anything you want and you can have anything on your list. It will be my pleasure to watch your lives unfold before my eyes.
Love,
Your Mom
