  1. There are many reasons why people can’t get a good night’s sleep and as with any other health conditions, things are not likely to improve until you find a way to break the cycle.

These are some of the main factors that need to be addressed.

    Worry and stress

We have all been kept awake by many factors that cause worry and stress in our lives. Money problems, relationship issues and work stresses can have you sitting up all night. A useful habit is to download your thoughts at the end of the day. Keep a pen and paper next to your bed and before you go to sleep, write down your thought and worries, create a to-do list for the following day or set down solutions and ideas that relate to work.

    Diet and eating patterns

What and when you eat can have a major impact on your ability to sleep. Eating too late or indulging in a rich or spicy meal can keep you awake. These foods take a long while to digest and the after effects of indigestion and heartburn are not going to set you up well for a good quality sleep.

A research suggests that both calcium and magnesium may be linked to poor sleep. Even low intakes of magnesium found in green vegetables, beans, nuts and seeds have been shown to make it harder to stay asleep. Calcium is found in dairy foods, soybeans and green vegetables and low levels have also been shown to make it more difficult to nod off.

    Alcohol and caffeine

Tea, coffee and energy drinks contain caffeine that helps to stimulate the nervous system and make you more alert, which is great if you need a pick-me-up. Dosing up on caffeine during the day can affect your ability to sleep later on in the evening. Try limiting your intake of caffeine to the morning and switch to decaffeinated options such as herbal teas. Alcohol is a double-edged sword when it comes to sleep. While a little may help to induce slumber, even in small amounts it can cause fragmented sleep patterns.

    Bedroom environment

“Your bedroom should be dark once the lights are switched off because melatonin, a sleep-regulating hormone, is very light-sensitive. Maintaining the right temperature can also help with sleep as a room that is too hot may prevent your core temperature from going down, which is essential for switching on the sleep mechanism within the body.

1.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

    A. Melatonin is a chemical in our bodies that disturbs our sleep.

    B. The lower the temperature is, the easier you will find it to sleep.

    C. Drinking a little coffee in the morning may not affect your sleep at night.

    D. You should eat more vegetables and wholegrains for supper to get a better sleep.

2.The passage can be found in the column of ________ in a newspaper.

    A. Science B. Health C. Fashion D. Education

  2. MCDONALD’S drew ridicule(嘲笑)in China when it changed its registered name to Jingongmen, or “Golden Arches” in October, after it was sold to a Chinese company. Some on Weibo, a microblogging site, thought it sounded old-fashioned and awkward, others thought that it had hidden meanings of furniture. The fast-food chain was quick to reassure customer that its restaurants would continue to go by Maidanglao, a rough transliteration(音译)that has, over the years, become a recognizable brand name. But for most companies now entering Chinese markets, transliterations are a thing of the past, says Amanda Liu, vice-president of Labbrand, a consultant firm based in Shanghai that advises firms on brand names.

Companies are instead choosing Chinese names with meanings that capture people’s imagination. That often involves going beyond a direct translation. New entrants are taking inspiration from BMW, which is Baoma, or “treasure horse” in China, and from Coca-Cola, which is Kekoukele, or “delicious happiness”.

The naming process is forcing companies to think harder about the image they want to project in China, says Ms Liu. LinkedIn, a professional networking site owned by Microsoft, chose the name Lingyin, or “leading elite(精英)” in 2014, meaning more uniqueness than its Western name. Her other corporate customers have included Airbnb, Marvel Comics and Haribo. Labbrand tests proposals with focus groups, ensuring that the name has no negative associations in any of the major Chinese dialects.

A vital part of the process is checking that candidate names have not already been snapped up. The Chinese are energetic trademarkers: in 2015 there were 2.8 million trademark applications in China, more than three times those in America and the EU combined. Companies considering entering the Chinese market might often find that their products have already been given local names, thanks, for example, to coverage in the press.

Some even find that their Chinese name has already been trademarked, says Dresden of Harris Bricken, a law firm, either by their own distributors, competitors seeking to block its entry, or counterfeiters(伪造者)taking advantage of soundalikes, etc.

Perhaps thanks to these mishaps, foreign firms are getting wiser to the importance of naming in China. More Chinese firms are also seeking advice on foreign names, says Ms Liu, as they seek to conquer Western markets. Both know that if they make a mistake, the social-media critics will be waiting.

1.The example of McDonald’s in Paragraph 1 indicates that ________.

    A. it doesn’t attract Chinese customers any more.

    B. having a recognizable name is important for companies

    C. transliteration becomes less popular for many companies

    D. more foreign companies tend to change their brand names

2.According to Paragraphs 2 and 3, with a proper Chinese name, companies entering the Chinese market are trying to ________.

    A. project their ads more widely B. ensure that customers are satisfied

    C. show a good and impressive image D. give inspirations to other companies

3.The underlined “snapped up” in Paragraph 4 can be replaced by ________.

    A. quickly seized B. properly used

    C. carefully examined D. completely forgotten

4.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

    A. Chinese firms also put emphasis on their foreign names.

    B. There were more trademark applications in China than in America in 2015.

    C. Some new entrants feel bothered by counterfeiters making use of soundalikes.

    D. With the Chinese name Lingyin, LinkedIn has more elite members than before.

  3. Self-driving vehicles have been proposed as a solution for the rapidly increasing number of fatal traffic accidents, which now cause 1.3 million deaths each year.

While we have made great progress in advancing self-driving technology, we have yet to explore how autonomous vehicles will be programmed to deal with situations that endanger human life, according to a new study published in Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience.

To understand how self-driving cars might make these judgments, the researchers looked at how humans deal with similar driving dilemmas.

When faced with driving dilemmas, people show a high willingness to sacrifice themselves for others, make decisions based on the victim’s age and turn onto sidewalks to minimize the number of lives lost. Ethical(伦理的)guidelines tend to disagree with human instincts(本能) in this case, saying that no life should be valued above another.

“The technological advancement and adoption of autonomous vehicles are moving quickly but the social and ethical discussions about their behavior are lagging behind,” says lead author Lasse T. Bergmann from University of Osnabrück, Germany.

Automated vehicles will eventually outperform their human counterparts, but there will still be circumstances where the cars must make an ethical decision to save or possibly risk losing a human life.

The study is especially relevant considering earlier this year a self-driving Uber car struck and killed a passenger in Arizona, in an incident widely regarded as the first death resulting from an autonomous vehicle.

An ethics commission launched by the German Ministry for Transportation has created a set of guidelines, representing its members’ best judgement on a variety of issues concerning self-driving cars. These expert judgments may, however, not reflect human instinct.

Bergmann and colleagues developed a virtual reality experiment to examine human instinct in a variety of possible driving situations. It was based on the well-known ethical thought experiment—the trolley problem.

In this experiment, there is a trolley running down the railway tracks. Ahead, on the tracks, there are five people tied up, unable to move, and the trolley is headed straight for them. A person is standing some distance off in the train yard, next to a lever(操作杆).If he pulls this lever, the trolley will turn to a different set of tracks. However, there is one person tied up on the side track. Does the person choose to pull the lever and kill one person, or do nothing and let five people die?

Bergmann recognized that the majority of people would not approve of the proposal made by the ethics commission that a passenger in the vehicle should not be sacrificed to save more people. “We find people chose to save more lives, even if this involves turning onto the sidewalk, endangering people uninvolved in the traffic incident,” said Bergmann, “Furthermore, subjects considered the factor of age, for example, choosing to save children over the elderly.” He also realized further discussion and research were needed. “Driving requires a complex weighing of risks versus rewards, for example, speed versus the danger of a critical situation,” Bergmann explained.

1.According to the passage, “human counterparts" in Paragraph 6 refers to ________.

    A. human drivers B. all human beings C. vehicle makers D. guideline makers

2.The virtual reality experiment carried out by Bergmann shows that ________.

    A. no life should be valued above another

    B. a passenger shouldn’t be sacrificed for more lives

    C. people prefer to sacrifice a child to an old man in an emergency

    D. all the subjects didn’t approve of the ethics commission decisions

3.It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

    A. people’s instinct is the most important factor in making decisions

    B. there is a long way to go to find solutions to ethic problems in self-driving cars

    C. the experiment of “the trolley problem” proved effective in solving driving dilemmas

    D. the first death of a self-driving Uber car set people thinking about ethic problems involved

4.The passage is mainly about ________.

    A. people’s attitudes towards self-driving vehicles

    B. people’s instinct when faced with driving dilemmas

    C. the ethical problems involved in self-driving vehicles

    D. the technological-problems concerning autonomous vehicles

  1. Guilt, a positive use for a negative emotion

Guilt is one the most painful emotions that humans experience but also one of the most common. Nobody enjoys feeling guilty, but this emotion serves an important purpose: it alerts a person when he or she has done something wrong. This makes it possible for the person to make amends and it can also motivate people to avoid making similar mistakes later.

Nevertheless, guilt can be destructive if not dealt with in the right way. It can cause people to avoid others because they are too embarrassed to apologize for their actions or inaction. Some try to avoid the pain of guilt by turning to other worse habits. Others try to cover up their guilt by blaming others or becoming angry.

What makes it more complicated is that sometimes people feel guilty about things that they can’t control. One example of this is survivors’ guilt, when people who survived a disaster feel guilty because they escaped death while others didn’t. Other people experience false guilt because of too high expectations for themselves.

The proper response to guilt depends on what kind of guilt you're dealing with. For false guilt, it’s important to recognize that guilt does not reflect an actual ethical failure. For example, some false guilt focuses on failing to meet expectations you had for yourself. In this case, it’s important to remind yourself that you have limits. No one is perfect, and no one can do everything, so admitting your limits is actually a sign of humility.

It’s also important to acknowledge what you are feeling. Even when you don’t need to feel guilty, these feelings are real and normal. Try to balance them with positive thoughts, but realize that it often takes time for feelings to change.

It’s possible that you feel guilty because you actually did something wrong—or didn’t do something you should have .If so, don’t try to hide it. Apologize and ask for forgiveness, working to heal relationships that were damaged by your actions, which will make your guilty feelings fade.

Guilt is painful, but it can serve a good purpose if you use it well.

Guilt, a positive use for a negative emotion

    One purpose it serves

To warn people of their mistakes, 1. them to mend their mistakes and motivating them to avoid 2. the same action again.

    Destructive results

If it is not 5. correctly, people may:

    6. from others because of embarrassment;

    ● turn to other worse habits to avoid the pain of guilt;

    ● cover their guilt by 7. the blame or being angry.

    Proper response

    ● Recognize guilt is not a reflection of ethical failure.

Admit your limits when you 8. to meet your expectation.

    ● Acknowledge your feelings.

Balance them with positive thoughts and be 9..

    ● Don’t hide your guilt.

Apologize and ask for forgiveness and work to 10. up with the people you hurt.
