  2. While the other kids seemed excited about celebrating the end-of-term party by playing games and sharing treats, Jeremy hated the very idea of the gathering.

Afraid to raise the pressure too high, I decided to contribute something that was easy to purchase on the walk to school.

Off we went the day of the party, approaching his school as if nothing was planned. I reminded him of our need to make a purchase, entered his favorite shop, and asked him to select the ripest bunch of grapes. He shot me an anxious look and insisted none of his classmates ever be able to notice he had something to bring to the party. My vision of a successful parenting method, resulting in delivering a sociable child to his school, diverted(转移)sharply from reality.

Back on route, I did my best to hide the sinking feeling of fear. How could I possibly drop him off and then walk into my own classroom to teach a successful class?

My next move was born in the heat of the moment. I said a quick goodbye at the front gate and rushed to his classroom through the emergency exit. I managed to inform his teacher about the grapes in the backpack and be out of the classroom before I could be spied by my son.

So, what happened on that June day? His teacher, a caring educator, worked wonders. My son and I still laugh about the way Mr. B started the day with an unusual question, “Does anyone have any grapes?” While Jeremy admits feeling a bit uncomfortable, the words encouraged him to take out the fruit. Because of the support he received, he remembers that day with pride for his courage.

1.Why did the author determine to purchase what was easy to get on their way to school?

    A. Because the food was tasty . B. Because the food was affordable.

    C. Because it was out of respect. D. Because it was a relief.

2.How did the author feel when she left the shop?

    A. Grateful. B. Satisfied.

    C. Worried. D. Regretful.

3.Why did the author hurry to her son’s classroom?

    A. She went there to give her lesson.

    B. She went to ask the teacher for help.

    C. She was afraid of her son being punished.

    D. She was invited to take part in the celebration.

4.What does the passage mainly talk about?

    A. The teacher inspired Jeremy to share grapes.

    B. Jeremy prepared for the coming party.

    C. The author taught Jeremy to select goods.

    D. The author helped Jeremy to become sociable.

  3. Much meaning can be conveyed, clearly, with our eyes, so it is often said that eyes can speak.

Do you have such kind of experience? In a bus you may look at a stranger, but not too long. And if he is sensing that he is being stared at, he may feel uncomfortable. The same in daily life. If you are looked at for more than necessary, you will look at yourself up and down, to see if there is anything wrong with you. If nothing goes wrong, you will feel angry toward other's stare with you that way. Eyes do speak , right ?

Looking too long at someone may seem to be rude and aggressive. But things are different when it comes to stare at the opposite sex. If a man glances at a woman for more than 10 seconds and refuses to remove his gaze, his intentions are obvious, that is, he wishes to attract her attention, to make her understand that he is admiring her.

However, the normal eye contact for two people engaged in conversation is that the speaker will only look at the listener from time to time, in order to make sure that the listener does pay attention to what the former is speaking, telling him that he is attentive. If a speaker looks at you continuously when speaking, as if he tries to control you, you will feel disconcerted. A poor liar usually exposes himself by looking too long at the victim, since he believes in the false idea that to look straight in the eye is a sign of honest communication. Quite the contrary, in fact, continuous eye contact is confined to lovers only, who will enjoy looking at each other tenderly for a long time, to show affection that words cannot express. Evidently, eye contact should be done according to the relationship between two people and the specific situation.

1.When a person stares at another one, it may be

① there is something wrong with another person

    ② a man wants to draw a woman's attention

③ a poor liar is telling a lie to another person

④ a person wants to say something but forgets

    A. ①②④ B. ①②③

    C. ②③④ D. ①③④

2.Why does a person look at another one from time to time in normal conversation?

    A. To show the speaker is polite. B. To attract the listener's attention.

    C. To make sure the listener is listening. D. To show affection words can't express.

3.The meaning of the underlined word in the last paragraph is close to

    A. unfair B. unsatisfied

    C. unfortunate D. uncomfortable

4.What is the best title for the passage?

    A. Eyes can speak. B. Eyes can tell lies.

    C. Eyes are important. D. Eyes can show affection.

  4. With its tall buildings and crowded streets, Hong Kong is one of the last places you would expect to find a wild animal. But green sea turtles have become regular visitors to beaches found in more peaceful parts of the metropolis.

Over the last month, people living in Hong Kong and Hainan Province have been lucky enough to see the giant turtles lay their eggs on the beaches at night. Male turtles spend their entire lives in the sea. But every two to six years, the females swim thousands of miles from their feeding grounds to lay eggs in their own birthplaces

Unluckily, few of the baby turtles survive with only one in 1,000 living into adulthood. If they manage to grow big, which takes 20 to 30 years, they can live for more than a century.

Man is the main reason why turtles are dying out. The creatures’ habitats are destroyed by fishing and pollution, while the turtles themselves are killed for food and leather.

“Sea turtle eggs and meat saved us during Japan's occupation of Hong Kong in World War II,”

said 65-year-old resident Chan Kam-wan. But the days of eating turtle eggs have long since passed. Hong Kong banned the eating and sale of them in 1976, hoping to help save the endangered creatures.

In recent years, the government has closed beaches between June and October so the turtles can lay eggs in peace. Scientists also try and keep a count of the number of turtles, even following them using satellites. Through tracking the turtles, they hope to learn new ways of protecting them.

Officials in Hong Kong have recently finished a study on sea life in the area. They are considering setting up a sea park to protect the sea turtles from water pollution and illegal fishing.

1.We can learn from the passage EXCEPT_________.

    A. Most of the baby turtles die before growing up

    B. It is difficult to find wild animals in Hong Kong

    C. Turtles can live for more than one hundred years

    D. You can find some male turtles on the beaches if lucky enough

2.A large number of turtles were killed for food by Hong Kong residents in

    A. 1976 B. 1978

    C. 1944 D. 1898

3.What can we conclude from the passage?

    A. The Problems that the turtles were facing have been settled.

    B. The government has built walls on the beaches to protect turtles.

    C. The government will plant many trees on the beaches to set up a park.

    D. The government is using some advanced equipment to protect turtles

4.Where may you read this passage?

    A. In a novel. B. In a tour guidance.

    C. In a newspaper. D. In a history book
