  2. The Ethiopian wolf is one of the world's most endangered members of the wolf and dog family. Fewer than 500 survive, living in six small highland areas of Ethiopia. Like other wolves, they form groups that protect their homes and raise their young. That is where the similarity to other wolves ends. Most wolf species work together to hunt. Ethiopian wolves split up in the morning, and each wolf heads out on its own in search of small animals.

The wolves seem to have a special love for the African giant mole-rat. This animal lives only in the Bale Mountains. Most mole-rats feed on roots underground, but the giant mole-rat also searches for food aboveground.

Ethiopia has a rapidly growing human population, and land for farming is short. People are moving into the highlands, driving out wolves and other animals. The wolves face other threats, too. Domestic dogs carry rabies (狂犬病) and other diseases. In some years, these diseases have killed more than three quarters of the wolves in the Bale Mountains. Wolves also have been hit by cars and shot by people.

Since 1995, the Ethiopian Wolf Conservation Programme (EWCP) has worked with local people to learn about and protect the wolves. One of its most important projects has been to vaccinate (接种疫苗) wolves and thousands of domestic dogs against rabies. Another project has been to build stoves (炉子) that burn less fuel. Many people who live near the wolves collect firewood for cooking and heating. When using better stoves, the people collect less firewood — and protect the wolves' habitats.

The work is paying off. Wolf populations have recovered from recent disease outbreaks. To make sure the wolves keep doing well, EWCP has trained people to educate local people about the wolf and how to protect it.

Thanks to the hard work of scientists and local people, the Ethiopian wolf and other Ethiopian animals face a brighter future here in Africa.

1.Different from other wolf species, Ethiopian wolves _____.

    A. hunt alone

    B. share food together

    C. raise their babies alone

    D. form groups in the morning

    2.What's the purpose of EWCP?

    A. To provide food for the wolves.

    B. To search for new wolf species.

    C. To build more living places for wolves.

    D. To prevent the wolves from getting diseases.

    3.In the author's eyes, EWCP is _____.

    A. hopeless B. helpful

    C. interesting D. dangerous

  3. Easter Island is one of the most mysterious islands. The triangular shaped island is made mostly of volcanic rock.

When we think of Easter Island we think of huge stone carved (雕刻) figures called Moai that dot the coastline. The Moai are seen all over the island, and in different shapes, sizes and stages of completion. No one is sure yet as to what purpose the Moai served, but there is evidence that the Moai were carved by the ancestors of the present inhabitants of the island. They sit on rocky lava telling a story of a long lost civilization.

Ron Fisher in his work Easter Island Brooding Sentinels of Stone mentions one explanation that “two classes of people, the so-called Long Ears and Short Ears, lived on the island. The Short Ears were governed by the Long Ears, and were forced to carve the Moai. After many generations and during a rebellion (反叛), the Short Ears killed all the Long Ears, which explains the sudden end of the statue-carving.”

Moai sit on platforms called Ahu. Ahu Akivi is an observatory built about 1500 AD. As in the case of many religious structures on Easter Island, everything has been situated with astronomical precision (精度): the seven statues look towards the point where the sun sets during the equinox (春分或秋分).

Ahu Akivi is an unusual site. A low ahu supports seven statues all very similar in height and style. The site is strange in that it is located far inland and the statues were erected (竖立) to face the ocean. The only site where this was done. Like other Easter Island sites the statues were found knocked off the ahu, lying face down on the ground. In 1960, archaeologist (考古学家) William Mulloy’s team spent several months raising the statues to their original positions.

Some scholars hold the idea that its seven statues represent the seven young explorers that the Polynesian King Hotu Matu sent from across the sea, probably from the Marquesas Islands, to find this new homeland for him. But no one knows for sure. The generally accepted theory is that these great stone statues were built to honour Polynesian gods and deified (奉为神) ancestors such as chiefs and other figures important in the island’s history. It is believed that their function was to look to a village or grave site as a protector. They may also have been status symbols for villages.

1.Ron Fisher’s work is mentioned to explain _____.

    A. who carved the Moai

    B. how the Moai were carved

    C. why the Short Ears killed the Long Ears

    D. who were the primary inhabitants of the island

2.Which of the following statements about Ahu Akivi is TRUE?

    A. Ahu Akivi was located near the coastline.

    B. The seven statues were the same in height.

    C. Ahu Akivi was discovered by William Mulloy.

    D. The seven statues faced down when discovered.

3.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?

    A. Who found the island first.

    B. Guesses as to what the statues represent.

    C. The important figures in the island’s history.

    D. Why King Hotu Matu sent explorers to the island.

4.The author writes this passage mainly to _____.

    A. introduce the Moai on Easter Island

    B. encourage people to visit Easter Island

    C. convince archaeologists to find more about Moai

    D. talk about who created the Moai on Easter Island

  4. Wild elephants wander across the crowded flatland of India; the forested river banks through fields in Brazil; a ribbon (缎带) of green spreads across Europe where the Iron Curtain used to be. Using such wildlife corridors (走廊) to link up larger but isolated (孤立的) protected areas is the most widely used method for stopping biodiversity decline (生物多样性衰退), with millions of dollars spent creating and protecting them every year. But has enthusiasm for a neat idea got ahead of the science?

As wild habitat is broken into isolated parts by farms, roads and settlements, we need to link them up with corridors of green. Then even if the entire habitat can’t be recreated, old migration (迁徙) patterns can be brought back, escape routes created ahead of climate change and — perhaps most importantly — isolated populations can interbreed (杂交), improving their genetic (基因的) diversity and their ability to survive.

Recently, Paul Beier, a biologist from Northern Arizona University, and his colleague Andrew Gregory, warned that “in spite of much research, there is little evidence that protection corridors work as expected.” There is, they say, plenty of evidence that wild animals will move through corridors. But supporters of corridors want, and claim, much more than this. They say that animals don’t just go for a walk in their protection woods, but that they move in forever and interbreed with neighbouring populations. In this way corridors supposedly linked isolated and endangered populations into an interbreeding — and much more powerful — whole.

Such claims sometimes hold up. In the United Kingdom, the expansion (扩张) of Kielder Forest in the 1960s provided a link between isolated populations of endangered red squirrels. Genes from isolated populations have now “spread through hundreds of forest parts” across 100 kilometers and more. But the Kielder Forest is much wider than an ordinary corridor. Few studies have looked for gene exchange in corridors; even fewer have found it. One study researched the genetic diversity of small marsupials (有袋类动物) in a narrow forest corridor crossing 4.5 kilometers of grassland in Queensland, Australia. It found that genetically distinct populations had kept on staying at either end. Mixing was impossible.

Other studies have shown that protection corridors work. But most have looked at short corridors of 100 meters through largely natural landscape. “That species can travel along short corridors in a natural setting doesn’t mean that they will be successful travelling along much longer corridors which are in a landscape greatly affected by human beings,” says Gregory, “still less that such movements occur frequently enough to allow enough gene exchange to occur so that the connected habitat blocks function as one population.”

Perhaps we shouldn’t make the perfect the enemy of the good. Is any corridor surely better than none? But consider this. The edges of wild areas are known danger zones for wildlife, where enemies and diseases may invade (侵略). Linking two existing protected areas with a long narrow corridor may uncover it to greater danger along these edges. Unless the benefit exceeds (超过) the threat, then there is serious possibility to do harm.

1.We can infer from Paragraph 1 that people might _____.

    A. pay too much attention to biodiversity

    B. be using wrong ways to protect wildlife

    C. be too idealistic about protection corridors

    D. have given too much protection to wildlife

2.According to Paragraph 2, wildlife corridors were put forward because of _____.

    A. their isolation B. human activities

    C. climate change D. alien animals

3.Which of the following would B eier most likely agree with?

    A. We should give up wildlife corridors.

    B. Animals don’t like to walk in corridors.

    C. We need more evidence to support how corridors can work.

    D. Corridors can link isolated animals into an interbreeding whole.

4.Kielder Forest is mentioned in Paragraph 4 as an example of the _____.

    A. primary corridor

    B. unsuccessful corridor

    C. ordinary corridor

    D. non-typical corridor

5.What kind of corridor is supposed to be effective according to Paragraph 5?

    A. Short and set in natural landscape.

    B. Long and set in affected landscape.

    C. Long and set in natural landscape.

    D. Short and set in affected landscape.

6.What’s the author’s attitude to wildlife corridors?

    A. Supportive. B. Doubtful.

    C. Disapproving. D. Unconcerned.
