  2. Many Americans think of driverless cars as a futuristic technology that will revolutionize travel in cities and along state highways. But recent experiments are proving that autonomous vehicles also have the potential to improve the quality of life for millions of Americans underserved by traditional ways of transportation, such as the elderly and disabled, so long as lawmakers make smart policies that pave the way for innovation.

A retirement community in San Jose, Calif. , which has been transformed by a small fleet(车队) of driverless taxis, shows the potential of self-driving cars to transform people’s lives. Built by a tech start-up called Voyage, the modified(被改进的) Ford Fusions are currently limited to a two-mile road, but residents are already having the benefits of these autonomous vehicles, which allow them to participate in social activities they would otherwise be unable to enjoy simply because they could not get to them.

When the trial run finally expands to 15 miles of road, these residents—whose average age is 76—will also have a convenient and reliable new way to appointments. As these cars continue to serve residents there, it is easy to understand why California is moving to simplify regulations for the industry.

In Michigan, forward-thinking policies have the potential to unlock other hidden benefits of autonomous vehicles, especially for those with physical disabilities. The Michigan Disability Rights Coalition has strongly advocated for the development of this technology, saying that it could give people with disabilities greater opportunities in the workforce and enable them to lead more fulfilling(满意的), independent lives.

Many recognize that autonomous vehicles will be the future of transportation, but it is too often overlooked that this future cannot arrive fast enough for millions of Americans who are forced to depend on others for day-to-day travel. The policymakers should follow the lead of places like California and Michigan, and pass rules and regulations to unlock these hidden benefits of driverless cars.

1.What’s the attitude of most American people to the future of autonomous vehicles?

    A. uncertain B. doubtful

    C. indifferent D. optimistic

2.What is the modified Ford Fusion?

    A. The collection of social activities. B. The name of a retirement community.

    C. A kind of autonomous vehicle. D. A two-mile road for self-driving cars.

3.Examples are given in the third and fourth paragraphs to prove

    A. what are preventing the development of the technology

    B. why driverless cars are restricted in many states in America

    C. how driverless technology benefits the aged and disabled

    D. when driverless cars can enter people’s life eventually

4.What does the author attempt to inform us in the last paragraph?

    A. The concept of autonomous vehicles has been widely recognized.

    B. The weak groups are often overlooked despite technology advances.

    C. The benefits of driverless cars have been fully unlocked.

    D. Regulations should go hand in hand with driverless technology.

  3. A Competitive Sport

Over the years, cheerleading(啦啦队) has taken two primary forms: game-time cheerleading and competitive cheerleading. Game-time cheerleaders’ main goal is to entertain the crowd and lead them with team cheers, which should not be considered a sport. However, competitive cheerleading is more than a form of entertainment. It is really a competitive sport.

Competitive cheerleading includes lots of physical activity. The majority of the teams require a certain level of tumbling (翻腾运动) ability. It’s a very common thing for gymnasts, so it’s easy for them to go into competitive cheerleading. Usually these cheerleaders integrate lots of their gymnastics experience including their jumps, tumbling, and overall energy. They also perform lifts and throws. This is where the “fliers” are thrown in the air, held by “bases” in different positions that require strength and working with other teammates.

Competitive cheerleading is also an activity that is governed by rules under which a winner can be declared. It is awarded points for technique, creativity and sharpness. Usually the more difficult the action is, the better the score is. That’s why cheerleaders are trying to experience great difficulty in their performance.

Besides, there is also a strict rule of time. The whole performance has to be completed in less than three minutes and fifteen seconds, during which the cheerleaders are required to stay within a certain area. Any performance beyond the limit of time is invalid.

Another reason for the fact that competitive cheerleading is one of the hardest sports is that it has more reported injuries. According to some research, competitive cheerleading is the number one cause of serious sports injuries to women. Emergency room visits for it are five times the number than for any other sport, partially because cheerleaders don’t use protective equipment. Smiling cheerleaders are thrown into the air and move down into the arms of the teammates, which may easily cause injuries. Generally, these injuries affect all areas of the body, including wrists, shoulders, ankles, head, and neck.

There can be no doubt that competitive cheerleading is a sport with professional skills. Hopefully, it will appear in the Olympics since cheerleaders are just as athletic and physically fit as those involved in the more accepted sports. It should be noted that it is a team sport and even the smallest mistake made by one teammate can bring the score of the entire team down. So without working together to achieve the goal, first place is out of reach.

1.What is the main purpose of competitive cheerleading?

    A. To compare skills of participants.

    B. To make the audience feel amused.

    C. To attract more people to watch events.

    D. To cheer up the competitors on the court.

2.The underlined word “integrate” in Paragraph 2 probably means “______”.

    A. examine B. combine

    C. identify D. replace

3.We can learn from the passage that competitive cheerleading ______.

    A. lacks necessary guidelines to follow

    B. enjoys greater popularity than other sports

    C. requires more designed actions than gymnastics

    D. has a relatively high rate of damage to the body

4.Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?

    I: Introduction P: Point Sp: Sub-point (次要点) C: Conclusion

    A. B.

    C. D.

  4. The Golden Egg

“I don’t want to write a story about girls! I don’t know anything about girls,” Louisa May Alcott told her publisher, Mr. Niles. But she was desperate for money. She seemed to be the only one in her family who could make money. Niles had asked her to write about something she knew, instead of the romantic adventure stories she had been writing. “So I plod away,” Alcott wrote,” though I don’t enjoy this sort of thing.” It was 1867, and the horrible Civil War was over. Now Alcott could turn her energy to making money.

Alcott wrote a simple story of life in her family, their pillow fights on Saturday nights and the amateur(业余的) plays they performed.” Our experiences may prove interesting, though I doubt it.”(Good joke,” she wrote years later.) Her book described her days growing up with four sisters in a family that had no money. She sketched a loving mother who took time to be interested in each child, and she told of the death of a beloved sister. She portrayed her family and friends in her book Little Women, Finally, in July of 1868, she finished writing. With a sigh and a headache, she sent off all 102 handwritten pages of her book.

Niles thought the book was dull, and so did Alcott. But when she received her copies of the book, Alcott thought it seemed better than expected. “Not a bit sensational,” she wrote, “ but simple and true. We really lived most of it .” Niles asked some girls to read Little Women, and they loved it. If the girls liked it, Alcott was satisfied.

In three months, all the copies of Little Women had sold. It was already time to print more books! Niles thought he could sell three or four hundred more copies.” An honest publisher and a lucky author made a dull book into a golden egg for an ugly duckling,” Alcott wrote in 1885. Later, with a great sigh of relief, she was able to write, “Paid off all the debts! Now I feel that I could die in peace. If my head holds out, I’ll do all I once hoped to do.”

1.Which of the following would be used to describe Alcott’s book?

    A. Funny . B. Boring.

    C. Magic. D. Skillful.

2.In which order did the following happen?

    a. Alcott began writing Little Women

    d. Alcott performed plays with her sisters

    A. a, b, e, d, c B. d, c, a, b, e

    C. c, b, e, d, a D. d, c, e, b, a

    A. Alcott wrote another book

    B. some girls started to read the book

    C. Alcott paid off all her debts

    D. Niles published hundreds of books girls liked

4.when she handed her first writing in Niles was__________?
