  3. What does it take to graduate (毕业) from a university? Many may say all you have to do is to take classes and pass the exams. Well, it is not enough if you're a student at Tsinghua University.

Starting this September, students at the university will have to take swimming courses, If they fail a swimming test at the beginning of their university course, they won't receive their degree (学位) until they can pass the test successfully. But students with certain physical or mental (心理的) illness are not included. Why does the university connect swimming ability with degrees? Liu Bo, head of the Division of Sports Science and Physical Education, explained, "As a necessary living skill, swimming is helpful in improving students' endurance (耐力). And students don't get hurt easily when doing the water sport." Considering the ability to swim as a must for students is not something new to this university-it was also necessary in the early 20th century. It was later dropped because of a rising number of students. Another reason is that there were not enough swimming pools. Besides Tsinghua University, Peking University and Xiamen University, have also listed swimming as a compulsory course for students.

However, the rule made by Tsinghua University has caused a heated discussion. Some welcomed the new rule, saying it's a necessary skill that can save lives in unexpected and dangerous situations as well as a way to stay healthy. However, some said it has nothing to do with getting a degree. It's not reasonable to ask people to be able to swim for them to graduate, especially for a lot of people who grew up in inland (内陆) cities, learning how to swim as an adult will be difficult. In fact, Chinese universities are not the only education organizations that encourage their students to swim. A few colleges in the. United States-including Cornell University, Columbia University and MIT-provide swimming classes for students, too. They believe that anything that stops people from dying needlessly is a valuable skill.

1.Besides Tsinghua University, another _______ universities encourage their students to swim.

    A.2 B.3 C.5

2.From this passage, we can learn that at Tsinghua University, _______.

A.students are expected to learn some living skills

B.all the students have to take a swimming course

3.The underlined word "compulsory" means _______ in Chinese.

    A.选修的 B.无关的 C.必修的

4.As for the discussion in paragraph 3, which statement is NOT mentioned?

A.It's helpful and healthy to learn to swim.

B.Swimming will get in the way of students' study.

C.Learning to swim should not be a must for getting a degree.

5.What can we infer from the passage?

A.All universities believe' that swimming is the most important skill.

B.Students at Tsinghua University had to take swimming courses in the 1910s.

C.It is much, easier for an adult who grew up in Chengdu to learn to swim.

  4. When HarmonyOS, the Chinese self-developed operating system (操作系统) for Huawei mobile phones, appeared on Aug 9, it quickly became a hot topic on social media. Many believe it not only means the rising power of our country's technology, but also shows respect to classical Chinese culture by naming the system "Hongmeng" in Chinese.

"Hongmeng" is a word from the ancient book Zhuangzi. It was used to describe the original state (原始状态) of the universe (宇宙) before the material came into shape. For HarmonyOS, "Hongmeng" shows that the developers want to make a new operating system, different from any other. Besides "Hongmeng", Huawei has also owned many of its products (产品) under the names of legendary creatures from traditional Chinese folk stories, such as "Qilin", a lucky monster and "Kunpeng", an animal that changed from a fish into a large bird. Many Chinese Internet users and media have spoken highly of Huawei's use of these names because they carry Chinese wisdom and ancient people's imagination.

In fact, Huawei is not alone in using traditional culture or modern business. Ne Zha, the new film, also connects traditional culture with modern elements (元素) successfully. It became the biggest surprise this summer. It tells a different story of Ne Zha-he is a devil (恶魔) born into a loving family and becomes a hero in the end.

Although Ne Zha's appearance in this film is strange and kind of ugly with scary teeth and heavy dark circles around his eyes, his spirit of trying to control his own life greatly encourages young people to fight for their bright future.

Indeed, the long history and a large number of classic works have given China a colorful culture. Myths and legends like Nv Wa Repairs the Sky and Hou Yi shoots the Suns are the creative works of imagination. After all, imagination is the beginning of creation.

1.You may not find the name of "_______" among Huawei's products.

    A.Tiger. B.Qilin C.Kunpeng

2.According to paragraph 2, lots of Chinese Internet users and media welcome Huawei because of _______.

A.the high quality of its products

    B.the use of traditional culture

    C.its development of HarmonyOS

3.Ne Zha in the new film is _______.

A.scary but kind B.strange but creative C.ugly but brave

4.Which of the following is NOT true?

A.Not all Huawei products are under the names of legendary creatures.

B.Only Huawei takes traditional culture for modern use.

    C.Creation starts from imagination.

5.The passage mainly tells us that _______.

A.Huawei becomes famous because of the self-developed operating system.

B.China is getting stronger and more people show respect to Chinese culture.

  1. The 32nd Summer Olympic Games. will be held in Tokyo, Japan in 2020. Recently, the organizers showed the medals (奖牌) to be presented at the Games. The design of the medals is simple, but they look shiny from any direction. And do you know that these medals were made from old smartphones and other electronics (电子产品)?

The idea was first introduced in 2016 by a group of young Japanese environmentalists. They wanted people to pay attention to the amount of e-waste created by the country's tech-loving people who change their electronics very often. To protect the environment, the Organizing Committee started the "Everyone's Medal" program in April 2017. The program encouraged people to drop used electronics in certain places. By the time the collection ended in March 2019, 78,985 tons of used smartphones and other small electronics had been collected. The program finally got 32 kilos of gold, 3,500 kilos of silver (银), and 2,200 kilos of bronze-more than enough metals (金属) to make every medal.

The Olympic Committee hopes the Tokyo 2020 Olympic medals will draw people's attention to the fast increase in e-waste not just in Japan, but worldwide and cause people to rethink upgrading (更新) electronics unnecessarily.

Though Japan is the first Olympic host country to make all the medals by using metals from used electronics, it is not the only one to think of the idea. Brazil made 30% of the silver and bronze medals for the 2016 Summer Olympics from recycled materials(回收材料).
