  1. Director-General Bokova,

    Ladies and gentlemen,

I am Peng Liyuan. It gives me a great pleasure to join you for this important initiative as the UN marks its 70th anniversary.

Education is very close in my heart. My father grew up in a very small village in China. In those days, not many villagers could read. So my father opened a night school to teach them how to read. With his help, many people learned to write their own names. With his help many people learned to read newspapers for the first time. With his help, many women were able to teach their children how to read.

As his daughter, I know what education means to the people, especially those without it. After generations of hard work, China has come a long way in education. I myself am a beneficiary ( 受益者) of that progress. Otherwise I would never become a professor of musical…

Many years ago my father made a small difference in his village. Together we can make a big difference in the world. I was once asked about my Chinese dream. I said I hope all children especially girls can have access to good education. This is my Chinese dream. I believe one day education first will no longer be a dream, it will be a reality enjoyed by every young woman on this planet.

    Thank you very much.

  2. It was the old lady's birthday. She put on her favorite blue dress and got up early to wait for the postman. Today she was sure there would be something. Myra wouldn't forget her mother's birthday, even if she hardly wrote to her.

The old lady was eighty today. Perhaps Myra might come. After all, eighty was a special birthday. Even if Myra did not come, she would send a present. The old lady was sure of that. She was excited—like a child.

The little boy, Johnnie, said he wouldn’t go out to play until the post came. "I guess you'll get lots of presents," he said, "I did when I was six."

What would she get? Perhaps a new sweater. Emm, blue is such a pretty color. Or a book, a travel book, with pictures, or a little clock, with clear black numbers...

Finally, the postman turned round the corner on his bicycle. Johnnie ran to him at once. "Granny," he shouted, "I've got your post."

"Just post ? No parcel (包裹), Johnnie?" Her heart beat fast.

"No, granny. Maybe the parcel was pretty large to come by letter post. It would come later by parcel post. You must be patient."

She tore the envelope open. It was a card with a message under the printed Happy Birthday—Buy yourself something nice with the check, Myra.

A big number is in the check! But with shaking fingers she tore the check into little bits. The pieces flied to the floor like a bird with broken wings. Her present, her lovely present.

  3. One morning when I was 11, I explored the town’s abandoned (废弃的) round grain barn. I found a chained sliding door that was wide enough for me to pass through.

Inside, there was a heavy smell of dead mice in the dark. After my eyes adjusted, I noticed a shaft (通风管道) that rose all the way to the top of the barn. On one side was a one-man elevator with a long rope and roller.

I stepped onto the platform, gave the rope a drag and the elevator began sliding up the shaft, but stopped halfway. After a brief panic attack, I noticed there were some holes formed a ladder (阶梯). For reasons known only to an 11-year-old, I decided it would be better to go up than down. So, with shaking hands, I began climbing up.

After what seemed like forever, I reached the top of the shaft. I stood up and found nothing of interest. It was just an empty room with a ladder leading up to the roof. I tried my best to climb all the way up but it was very difficult. There was too much heavy dust. When dust was blown, I even couldn’t breathe. I didn’t know how long it took but luckily I climbed up, popped the straw roof and saw a bright blue sky.

I suddenly realized the dust and powder pouring out of the top could draw attention. So when the dust had settled, I climbed down and slipped out of the chained door. I’m not sure if I was more excited about being alive or about not being caught, but I ran all the way back home.

  4. ① More and more teachers say the digital age has had a good and a not-so-good influence on the American teenagers. More than 2,000 high school teachers took an online survey. 75 percent of the teachers said the Internet and digital search tools have had a “mostly good” use for their students' research habits and skills. But 87 percent agreed that these technologies “make the students not have enough attention.” And 64 percent said the technologies “do little to help them in courses.”

② The Pew Internet Project did the survey with the National Writing Project. Judy Buchanan is a voice director of the National Writing Project. Ms. Buchanan says digital research tools are helping students learn more, and learn faster. Teachers really like these tools, because they are ways to make some of learning exciting. Young people enjoy using these tools. And the goal is to help them become creative students of meaningful work, and not just that kind of copyist.

③ But one problem the survey found is that many students lack digital literacy. In other words, they trust too much of the information. Judy, Buchanan says these students, have not developed the skills they need to tell whether the online information is good or bad.

④ Another problem the survey found is something that might not seem like a problem at all, being-able to quickly find information online. Teachers say the ability of their students to work hard to find answers is becoming weaker. They say students depend too much on search engines (引擎) and do not make enough use of printed books or research, librarians.

⑤ Besides, many teachers are also worried about the problem that the Internet makes it easy for students to copy work done by others, instead of using their own abilities.

1.What does the writer want to tell us by writing this passage?

A.Digital search tools are playing a key role.

B.Students don't know how to use the digital search tools.

C.Many teachers are worried about the students' abilities.

D.Digital tools bring about benefits and problems.

    2.How is the passage organized?

    A. B.

    C. D.

3.The underline sentence in Paragraph 3 probably means _______________.

A.many students can’t understand how to use the digital knowledge well.

B.many students don’t have the right digital tools.

C.many students can’t find the information from the Internet.

D.many students don’t trust their university teachers.

4.What is the next paragraph probably about?

A.Show an online survey from students. B.Show another benefit of digital tools.

C.Show the solutions to the problems. D.Show the names of digital tools.
