  1. Not willing to pay $400 for a basic room or upwards of $1,200 for a suite(套房)at a luxury(豪华的)hotel? We hear you. In the past, this meant having to put up with cheap hotels. Essentially, you got what you paid for. But all that’s changed, as mid-level hotels have begun competing for a population that travels more then ever. Even in New York and San Francisco --- two of the most expensive cities in the country --- one can find comfortable, affordable options with much modern conveniences. We searched the country for the best hotels under $150.

    Hotel 340

    St. Paul, Minnesota, USA

This twelve-storey(层)English-renaissance(文艺复兴)building once served as a downtown clubhouse for St. Paul’s outstanding people; today, the repaired structure houses the hotel on the top three floors. Its 35 rooms stand out for hardwood floors, marble showers and nice views of the Mississippi River, and room comforts include iPod docks(基座), free local and national telephone calls and coffee makers. The University Club of St. Paul, a grand hall bar, and an all-new-60,000-square-foot fitness center(free for guests)also share space in the building.

    Marina Inn

    San Francisco, California, USA

Located in the Marina district, where the streets are lined with luxury stores and great restaurants, the Marina Inn is the ideal place for business or pleasure. Few destinations offer the quality and variety of environment, scenery, entertainment, accommodation, and dining that waits for you here at the Marina Inn. It’s a ten-minute walk to Fisherman’s Wharf and there are abundant bus connections to take you anywhere in the city.

    Hotel Havana

    San Antonio, Texas, USA

When one thinks of his historic Texas town, usually the southwest comes to mind. So does Mexico. Since 1914, the hotel has served passers-by. The 27 rooms come in all shapes and sizes, many of which include Turkish carpets and elegant Cuban art on the walls. Bathrooms are distinguished with Red Flower body care products.

1.When you couldn’t afford a luxury hotel in the past, ______.

A.you could pay $400 for a basic room

  2. Two things I really believe in --- saving money and saving the planet, and it’s even better when I can do something that accomplishes both at the same time. Rainwater harvesting is just such a thing. In the near future, rainwater harvesting will be as common as twelve-year-old girls carrying cell phones.

Many countries already rely heavily on rainwater. Every building in these countries collects the rainwater from its roof and stores it for later use. However, America is just slightly slow to take action.

There are many ways to harvest rainwater and most of them are easy and inexpensive. For example, use rain barrels(桶)to collect the water that would run off your roof. You’d be surprised at how fast a fifty-gallon(加仑)barrel will be filled with free, usable water. New building construction offers some good ways to gather rainwater, and the cost of set-up is usually made up by reduced usage very quickly. Rainwater can be conveyed by roof pipes into underground containers, where a pump can draw water up as needed.

The rainwater can even be treated to make it drinkable. If that rainwater were not collected, but allowed to run over your lawn(草坪), into the street and eventually to a storm water treatment facility, it would pick up all sorts of pollutants on its journey --- chemical compositions and agricultural poisons from the grass, motor oil, waste water and such from the roads, and who knows what else. That is to say, the shorter distance it covers the more drinkable it will be.

Depending on where you live, the rainwater may be piped to a treatment plant or it may run in natural channels to allow nature to remove the pollutants. Either way, the treatment of rainwater is high priced. If you reduce the amount of rainwater run-off from your home or office, you reduce the need for treatment.

Water is rapidly becoming one of our most precious resources and it is not as abundant as you may think. In the year 2015, the United States used generally 479 billion gallons of fresh water per day.

1.According to the passage, harvesting rainwater can ______.

A.help us save money and be good for the environment

B.help us realize the importance of water

C.promote the development of economy and peace

D.make us live a better life in the near future

2.What could we learn from the first and the second Paragraph?

A.Little girls can save money by carrying cell phones.

B.Many countries can’t afford to harvest rainwater.

C.Harvesting rainwater in America is not that common.

D.Rainwater harvesting is mainly adopted by developed countries.

3.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

A.How to take advantage of rainwater.

B.How to fix the equipment under the ground.

C.How to reduce the cost of the equipment.

    D.How to harvest rainwater.

4.What is the best time for people to harvest rainwater for drinking?

A.Before it is piped to a treatment plant.

B.After it runs over your lawn.

C.After it runs into the street.

D.Before it drops from the roof.

5.It can be inferred from the passage that ______.

A.it is easy to make rainwater drinkable

B.the author calls on people to harvest rainwater

C.many countries ignore to harvest rainwater

D.it is easy to deal with the pollutants from rainwater

  3. Last year I lived in Chile for half a year as an exchange student with the American Field Service. Compared to most visitors, I didn’t travel much. I lived with a Chilean family and had the responsibilities of any Chilean teenager. I went to school every day, in uniform. I had good days and bad days and days that I didn’t understand.

Chuquicamata, my host community, is a mining camp in the Atacama Desert. There is no disco, no shopping center, no museum or beach. Driveways must be watered daily to keep the dust down.

When I arrived here, I was scared. It was so different from the urban middle-class America I was accustomed to. There were lost dogs on the streets, and a constant cloud of brick-colored dust came from the mine. There was no downtown, few smoothly paved(用砖石铺的)streets, and little to do for amusement. The people worked extremely hard. Rain was a rare phenomenon; earthquakes and windstorms were frequent.

I had studied Spanish for two and a half years and was always one of the best students in my class. But in my first week in Chile I was barely able to communicate and desperate for one person to whom I could explain my shock. I couldn’t speak the thoughts in my head --- and there were so many.

Most exchange students experience this like me. Culture shock presents itself in everything from increased aggression toward the people to lack of appetite or weight gain and depression. I was required to overcome all difficulties. Being an exchange student is not easy.

As time passed, everything changed. I began to forget words in English and to dream in Spanish and love Chilean food. I got used to not depending on expensive things for fun. Fun in Chuquicamata was being with people. And I took math, physics, chemistry, biology, Spanish, art, and philosophy --- for which I received half a credit in global studies. Somehow my high school couldn’t figure out a way to relate my experience to its curriculum.

But the sacrifices were nothing compared to the gain. I learned how to accept as well as to succeed in another culture. I now know the world is my community and have a much deeper understanding of both myself and others.

1.The author went to Chile last year with the purpose of ______.

A.paying a visit to Chile as a tourist

B.working as a volunteer of the American Field Service

C.studying Chilean culture as a college student

D.experiencing Chilean life as an exchange student

2.On arriving in Chile, the author felt frightened because ______.

A.he couldn’t get used to working so hard as Chileans did

B.he did not know how to get along with local people because of the culture gap

C.its living conditions were much worse than what he was familiar with

D.his life was threatened by earthquakes and windstorms

3.During the first week in Chile the author ______.

    A.could hardly communicate with people

B.found one person to explain his shock

C.couldn’t express his thoughts in English

    D.couldn’t overcome his great depression

4.According to the text, the author most probably thinks that his life in Chile was ______.

A.wonderful but tiring B.hard but meaningful

C.difficult and terrible D.boring and disappointing

5.What can we learn from the passage?

A.Most Chileans are not friendly to foreigners.

B.Exchange students always fail to succeed in another culture.

C.The author benefits greatly from the experience in Chile.

D.The official languages of Chile are Spanish and English.

  4. Every year in America, high-school students who want to go on to college take a national examination called the Scholastic Aptitude Test, or SAT in a shortened way. Their score is an important factor in determining which colleges will admit them. The Scholastic Aptitude Test measures one’s mathematical ability and use of the English language. Traditionally, the English part involved grammatical questions and paragraphs that test reading comprehension.

But the SAT folks have added a single question, to be answered in an essay, handwritten on the spot. That’s an interesting way to test writing ability, but content aside. Have you ever seen young people’s handwriting lately? Or anyone’s for that matter, in this age of computer keyboards? Students write numbers and sign their names on bank checks. They scribble class notes in what can generously be described as the written word.

Yet today’s kids are asked to write, thoughtfully and clearly, for several minutes on this SAT Test. Good luck to the text scorers who must work out difficultly the scrawl(潦草的笔迹)of young people who’ve been typing on computers since the age of three! Teachers insist that good handwriting can not only help one’s score on the SAT, but also, later on in life, impress potential employers. And don’t forget, we all have to use handwriting from time to time, as computers go down when the power goes out.

Then how to improve the handwriting? Well, with a few simple steps you can improve your handwriting.Position the pen. You should hold the pen between the forefinger and the thumb. You should then rest it near the first knuckle(指节)of the middle finger. The rest of your fingers should be curled(卷曲)under your hand and your hand should remain relaxed.

Evaluate your writing. What do you like and what don’t you like about the way you write? Make changes to your letters till you like how they look.

Take your time. Make sure that, while you are writing, you take your time. Speed can definitely make your writing terrible. If it is worth writing well, then take your time.

Practice. Practice it a lot; it’s not enough to do it once and hope for the best. It has to be something you work at to make great improvements.

1.At present, the SAT tests students on ______.

    A.math, English, reading and writing

    B.math, grammar, reading and handwriting

    C.math, foreign language and writing

    D.math, foreign language and handwriting

2.The underlined word “scribble” in Paragraph 2 probably means ______.

    A.writing quickly and roughly

    B.typing simply and correctly

    C.painting clearly and neatly

    D.describing properly and well

3.According to the text, good handwriting can ______.

    A.help students pass the test

    B.make a student more popular

    C.show students’ ability

D.assist students in getting a job

4.Which of the following should you avoid when improving your handwriting?

    A.Practicing writing a lot.

B.Writing as fast as you can.

C.Relaxing your hand when holding the pen.

D.Changing your letters till you like how they look.

5.The author mainly wants to tell us that ______.

A.writing seems to be very important in the SAT

B.those who will go to college have to take the SAT

C.students should practice handwriting more often

D.kids don’t know how to write in the computer age

  1. 阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。

A young lady was standing on the corner with a map in her hand. She looked puzzled. Several people passed by, looked at her but did not stop. I wondered why. Maybe it was because of the way she was dressed. She wore a dirty dress and looked pale.

As I crossed the street and came closer to her I asked if she wanted help. She thanked me and smiled in relief. As it turned out she was looking for the hospital. I felt wonderful just reaching out, and taking that extra moment to help.

Many times in these situations I end up walking a person to where he or she is going when giving directions would be too complicated. I like helping people this way due to my own experience. Many years ago, we travelled in Japan and needed directions. A kind Japanese who saw our problem came to us and helped us out. This man just took my heavy bags and guided us to where we needed to be. We could not speak any Japanese while the man could not speak any English. Although we could not communicate through words, we communicated through the heart.

Sometimes when I do a special favor for a stranger, the person will say, “I hope I can do something for you one day to return the favor.” They already have done something for me by giving me the opportunity to help them. But I hope that when they come across a situation where someone needs their help, they will be willing to reach out as well.
