  2. For the past 15years, factory owner Kamal Parmar has been running an after-school program for slum kids in Ahmedabad, India, helping them with basic skills like reading and writing and even preparing for their school tests.

Parmar’s story began one afternoon 15 years ago. He stopped a few kids returning home from the local school and took their exam paper and asked them a few questions. Shockingly, he made a shocking discovery--the students, even the older ones, knew nothing about reading except the alphabet. And that left him thinking that something should be done for these children.

So he invited the kids to visit his workshop every evening, where he set up a temporary classroom with metal desks. The shabby school started off with 10 students. Today, the Footpath School has a total of 155 students and many of the kids that Parmar has taught in the past 15yearshav e gone to attend college and build successful careers.

Despite having studied only till the seventh grade, he has been able to teach the kids by inventing creative techniques. He asks them to read first and then to form questions on their own and read them out. In this way, many kids learn all seven subjects in six months.

Parmar’s family are very supportive of his project and are proud to see how much of an impact he has had on the kids. His students love him. Ten of his ex-students are currently serving as teachers at the school and he doesn’t have to employ any teachers.

For those who are inspired by his story, but can’t actually volunteer at school, Parmar has a simple piece of ads ice: “Try to educate just one child a year, and see the difference it makes to the society.”

  3. At least 35 percent of Beijing households will be covered by family doctor service at the end of this year. All local households will enjoy the service as of 2020, according to the Municipal Health and Family Planning Commission.

It is good that Chinese communities can expect more general practitioners(从业者),who do not specialize in any particular area of medicine but who are able to treat the general health problems for people of all ages. By the end of last year over 8 million residents in Beijing had reportedly signed up for family doctor services, accounting for more than 40 percent of the city’s permanent population.

Since 2009 China has launched scores of programs nationwide to ensure citizens have fairer access to elementary public health services ,among which the introduction of family doctors has been one of the most successful. Some regions have issued guidelines on the promotion of the family doctor service. And four months ago, Premier Li Keqiang said in this year’s Government Work Report that the service should cover at least 85 percent of the Chinese cities this year.

The expanding coverage, however, may not guarantee more residents will be offered quality medical services.

Family doctors in some places rarely visit the families they are assigned to, and some of them have been struggling to solve patients problems either because of their unfitness or because they have too many households to attend to. In some cases, a family doctor might be assigned to see hundreds of residents a day.

That highlights the need to better the arrangement of medical resources and to offer proper encouragement to family doctors, who should get patients to make appointments rather than employ temporary arrangements.

1.How many permanent people were living in Beijing by the end of last year?

    A. About 20 million.

    B. About 8 million.

    C. About 85 million.

    D. About 32 million.

2.What is the government’s attitude to public health services?

    A. Cautious.

    B. Favorable.

    C. Ambiguous.

    D. Disapproving.

3.From the fifth paragraph we can infer that .

    A. some family doctors seldom visit the assigned families

    B. some residents can’t get quality medical services

    C. some family doctors have no ability

    D. the new program still faces some problems

4.What is the best title for the text?

    A. Family Doctor’s Quality Service Matters.

    B. Medical Resources in China.

    C. Beijing’s Permanent Population in 2017.

    D. The Introduction of Family Doctors.

  4. Bats are the only mammals(哺乳动物) that can fly a great distance, but they have another ability. Many bats live a very long time for an animal of their size. European researchers are studying bats to understand why they lives0 long. They hope to make discoveries aimed at fighting the aging process in human beings.

Last week, the group of scientists said they had identified important biological qualities in some bat species. The group studied bat chromosomes(染色体), a line of genes found in the nucleus(细胞核) of cells. The scientists were most interested in structures connected to the ends of the chromosomes. They are called telomeres(端粒), which protect the ends of chromosomes and shorten each time a cell divides. Scientists believe this shortening process causes cells to breakdown. They say this is what causes aging.

The European researchers studied 493 bats from four bat species. The group used information that had been gathered over more than 60 years. Of these animals ,the greater mouse-eared bat generally lived the longest, an average of 37 years. The scientists said this and a related species, which are grouped together under the name Myotis, had telomeres that did not shorten with age. Another Myotis bat holds the record for oldest age, reaching 41years. The scientists’ findings suggest that these bats cells have the ability to maintain and repair their telomeres. This, they said, helps guard against the aging process.

Based on its body size, a bat like the greater mouse-eared bat would be expected to live four years. But, these mammals have been found to live nearly 10 times longer than that. The scientists found that only 19 species of mammals live longer than humans when their body size is considered. Eighteen of these are bats.

1.European researchers are studying bats mainly hoping to .

    A. learn the living habit of bats.

    B. find out why bats enjoy a long life.

    C. try to understand why bats can fly as a mammal

    D. discover a good way to prevent human beings from aging.

2.What does the second paragraph mainly explain to us?

    A. The structures of bats’ chromosomes.

    B. What cause aging biologically.

    C. The functions of telomeres.

    D. What causes cells to break down.

3.The greater mouse-eared bat and Myotis bat live so long because .

    A. they are grouped together under the name Myois

    B. their telomeres are decreasing with age

    C. their ells are able to keep up and fix their telomeres

    D. their bodies produce more telomeres than human beings

4.From the last paragraph, we can infer that. .

    A. bats live 10 times longer that human beings

    B. bats enjoy the longest life among mammals

    C. bats like the greater mouse-eared bat should have lived longer

    D. Most bats live longer than human beings considering their body size
