  1. I ran into a stranger as he passed by. “I'm so sorry!” was my reply. Then he said, “Excuseme too... I wasn't  36watching for you.” We were very polite, this stranger and I. Then we went 37 our way after saying goodbye.

But at 38 , a different story is told. How we treat our loved ones, young and old. Later in the kitchen, as I 39our meal, my daughter walked up to me, very still. When I turned, I 40  knocked her down. “Get out of the way!” I shouted with a frown(皱眉). She stepped away silently, with her little heart 41_ . I didn't realize how harshly(苛刻地) I had spoken.

That night, when I lay 42  in bed, God's quiet voice spoke to me and said, “While  43  with a stranger, you are calm and polite, but with those you love, you are QUICK to excite... Go look around on the kitchen floor, you'll find some flowers there by the 44 . Those are the flowers she brought for you. She 45  them herself-- pink, yellow, and your favorite blue. She stood there quietly, and you never saw the 46 in her eyes.”

By this time, I felt sad and small and now my own tears had begun to fall. I quietly went and knelt by her 47 : “Wake up, my dear,” I said, “Are these the flowers you picked up for me?” She smiled, “I found them out by the tree. I 48 them in a napkin, just for you. 1. Two travelling angels stopped to spend the night in the home of a wealthy family. The family was impolite and refused to let the angels stay in the guest room. Instead the angels were given a space in the cold underground room. As they made their bed on the hard floor, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and repaired it. When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied, "Things aren't always what they seem."

The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very poor, but very kind farmer and his wife. After sharing what little food they had, the couple let the angels sleep in their bed where they could have a good night's rest. When the sun came up the next morning, the angels found the farmer and his wife in tears. Their only cow, whose milk had been their only income, lay dead in the field.

The younger angel was very angry and asked the older angel, "How could this happen? Why did you not watch out for the cow? The first man had everything, yet you watched over his house," she accused. "The second family had little but was willing to share everything, and you did not help."

"Things aren't always what they seem," the older angel replied. "When we stayed in the underground room , I noticed there was gold stored in that hole in the wall. Since the owner was so greedy and unwilling to share his good fortune, I asked God if I could seal the wall so he couldn't find it. Then last night as we slept in the farmer's bed, the angel of death came for his wife. I asked God if the angel could take the cow instead. You see, things aren't always what they seem. "

1.Why did the older angel repair the hole for the rich family?

A.Because she didn't like the greedy owner.

B.Because she wanted to save the gold for the poor.

C.Because the underground room was too cold to stay in.

D.Because she believed that one should always be ready to offer help.

2.The younger angel was very angry because ________.

A.the older angel killed the farmer's cow

B.the older angel treated the two families differently

C.the wealthy man gave them a bad place to live in

D.the angel of death took the cow away

3.Why did the older angel let the farmer's cow die?

A.Because God wanted the older angel to take the cow.

B.Because she wanted to teach the younger angel a lesson.

C.Because she wanted to save the farmer's wife.

D.Because she was sympathetic to the rich.

4.The story tries to tell readers that ________.

A.angels are always ready to help the poor

B.sometimes things are not what they seem

C.angels are always ready to help the rich

  2. What is your body language saying to your children? What is their body language telling you? I had the honor of hearing Jan Hargrave speak the other day. She is one of four body language experts in the US. Jan Hargrave says we lie with the right side of our brains, so it is our left hand that gives us away. A person touching his nose, pulling at his ear or rubbing his eye with his left hand might be lying to you. Also, a person who, in any way, crosses any fingers might just be lying. That, she says, is a holdover(遗留物) from childhood, when we crossed our fingers to signal that we didn’t mean what we were saying. When children squint(眨) their eyes, move their body away from you, or can’t seem to make good eye contact, you may need to ask for a little more clarification.

But just as important, children learn early how to read our body language when they are conversing(交谈) with us. Here are some acceptance signals to let them know you are interested when they are talking to you. Lean(倾斜) towards them. Make good eye contact and smile. Open your arms. Let your hands relax with the palms(手掌) showing: an open, upward palm always show acceptance. If your legs are crossed, make sure you are not crossing them away from your child. These are important because they signal to your child that you are focused on them and are accepting and welcoming them into your world.

By paying attention, we can open those lines of important communication with our children and we can see the truth more clearly. I think it would be a mistake to use these tools to lie, but we need to be aware of the signals we are giving so we can show people that they really do matter to us.

1.According to Jan Hargrave, we can tell whether a person is lying by _______.

    A.observing his/her left hand’s movements.

B.looking at how he/ she crosses his/ her fingers

C.observing whether he/ she uses body language

D.making good eye contact with him/ her

2.We can learn from the passage that body language _______.

A.is hard to master for children

B.can be understood in different ways

    C.may help improve communication

D.is more likely to hide the truth

3.Which of the following does NOT show acceptance to people?

    A.Smile while making eye contact.

    B.Open your arms to them.

C.Relax your hands with the palms showing.

D.Cross your leg away from them.

4.In the last paragraph, the author seems to suggest that parents_______.

A.spend more time with their children

B.learn to read and use body language

    C.pay attention to family communication

D.try to prevent their children from lying

  3. Last spring, members of Alaska’s Troop 34, based in Fairbanks, trudged (跋涉) out into the snowy wilderness to take part in their state’s Take a Kid Trapping program. In many parts of the state, beavers (海狸)are pests and need to be controlled.

The 10-to-12-year-old girls found out where beavers lived, set traps, and skinned the two animals they caught. The girls hope to catch ten more beavers so that the entire troop can make mittens and hats with the fur. They also want to cook beaver meat.

Troop leaders and members say the Scouts are doing a good deed by helping control the state’s beaver population. But animal-rights activists say trapping is cruel. They want the Girl Scouts to stop in their tracks.

Beavers aren’t only causing a problem in Alaska. Residents in Sampson County, N.C., have turned to a local committee to help them battle the growing beaver population there.

County landowners are frustrated after the county spent more than $ 50,000 in eight years trying to reduce the beaver population through a government program. The joint state and federal program included paying money to trappers for every beaver carcass they trapped.

Many local residents say that the program didn’t work because there were too few trappers. That’s why the county set up its own committee to investigate other ways to control the area’s beaver population.

The county will rely on its own beaver-trapping program. It has hired a trapper to set traps in various areas. The county will pay $10 for every beaver carcass.

Why do many people say that beavers are a nuisance? For beavers to survive, they need lots of water. Water provides the large rodent (啮齿动物)with a place to hide from meat – eating animals. Beavers also store food underwater for the winter. When there’s not enough water in a particular area, beavers get busy building dams.

Beaver dams can cause major flooding and damage to the surrounding countryside as the animals cut down trees to use in their construction projects. Beavers build canals to transport heavy objects.

    1.What is Alaska’s Troop 34?

A.A team of the Boy Scouts.                 B.An army.

C.A team of the Girl Scouts.                 D.A sports team.

2.Why does the troop hope to catch ten more beavers?

    A.To fulfill their task.

    B.To sell them for money.

    C.To get enough fur.

D.To exchange them for mittens and hats.

3.Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.Sampson County has to find a new way to control the beaver population there.

B.The government program in Sampson County has proved to be a success.

C.The local government has controlled the number of beavers in the County.

D.More and more trappers now start to set traps in Sampson County.

4.Local residents hate beavers because they can ___________.

    A.cause damage to dams

B.block up canals with heavy objects.

C.do great harm to construction projects.

D.badly damage the environment and cause floods.

  4. Let’s say you have a piece of wood, a nail, and a hammer. Pretend the wood is a person, and the nail is a mean rumor(谣言) about that person. If you hammer in the nail, you’re obviously hurting him or her. If you then pull out the nail, there’s still a hole in the wood, and the damage has been done.

There are many reasons why that nail of a rumor can be so harmful. Rumors are, quite simply, a form of bullying(欺侮). When a person or a group makes up a rumor about someone or decides to spread gossip, it’s usually to hurt someone, break up a friendship, or make someone less popular. It’s the same thing as teasing, only it’s done behind someone’s back instead of to his or her face.

When you spread a rumor about someone, you’re sending a signal that the person is outside of the group, and somehow less worthy of friendship than others. You’re making fun of that person or pointing out negative things about him or her. This can let others think that it’s okay to make the person feel bad, and make him or her an outsider.

We need to be able to trust our friends, and gossip and rumors can break this trust. If you tell a personal secret to a friend, and he turns around and tells it to someone else, you might feel like you will get burned if you ever get close to him again.

Letting a rumor influence your behavior is like letting someone else make a big decision for you. Let’s say you hear that the teacher plans to call a Snow Day tomorrow because a blizzard (暴风雪) is coming. Expecting a day off, you don’t do your homework. The next morning, the blizzard turns out to be nothing more than a drizzle(毛毛雨), and school isn’t off after all. You get zeroes on your work.

1.To tell a rumor and a tease apart, you depend on ______.

A.whether it is done behind someone

B.whether it is painful or not

C.whether it is a kind of bullying

    D.whether it is spread fast.

2.If a rumor is spread about someone, others may_______.

A.point out his or her advantages

B.keep away from him or her

C.not feel he or she is an outsider

D.be hurt if getting close to him or her again.

3.The purpose of this passage is to _______.

A.advise on how to deal with rumors

B.teach us how to judge a rumor

C.find out why rumors spread fast

    D.explain why rumors hurt

So I tried taking things easy by taking part in various activity out of class, enjoying music and even daydreaming about fun things. To my delight, this worked! Gradually,I became more anxious about exams and began to take pleasure in my studies. Pressure cannot avoided.
