In the United States, when one becomes rich, he wants people to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what “keeping up with the Joneses” is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbours.
The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $ 125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighbourhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbours.
It was like a race, but one could never finish his race because one was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment in New York City.
Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do things just to keep up with rich lifestyle of their neighbours. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it “Keeping up with the Joneses” because “Jones” is a very common name in the United States. “Keeping up with the Joneses” came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momand’s series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years.
People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are “Joneses” in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.

It’s a long-awaited day for China. The navy now has its first aircraft carrier(航空母舰), Liaoning.
It’s a unique experience to get to know the life in the carrier. The carrier is just like a small city on the sea. It has all the functions for daily life. There are 4 words to sum up its characters: big, small, much and high. The carrier Liaoning is such a huge one that the total length of the whole corridor(过道)could reach over 20 kilometers. But the living space for the sailors(水手)is quite small. That’s because the carrier is designed for researching purposes, rather than comfortable living. Over 1,000 sailors, both men and women, are living onboard. They are arranged among over 3,000 tiny rooms below the deck. For visitors, it’s so easy to get lost. So the first thing the new sailors have to learn is their way around. The number of female sailors is much less than that of the males, taking about 5 percent of the total. But they play a key role in carrying out some special missions.
Also, you will be surprised by the high level of education of today’s sailors. The captain said that over 90 percent of the sailors are college graduates. Six hold Doctor’s Degrees and 45 have a Master’s. The whole team is young but vigorous(朝气蓬勃的). The complex work on the carrier requires high management abilities for the commanders onboard(在船上).
1.Why do we visitors get lost easily inside the carrier?
A.Because they don’t have a map.
B.Because the living space is quite small.
C.Because there are too many corridors for rooms.
D.Because the corridor inside the carrier is too long.
2.What does the word “high” in Line 6 refer to(指代)?

It’s possible to do many simple tricks with numbers. Here is one trick, if you follow the instructions, you will find it’s really interesting.
First, write down your house number. For example, if your address is 73 Jin Shang Road, you would write down 73. After you write down your house address number, you double it. Then add 5 to this doubled number. For example, if your address is 73 and you double it, you will get 146. Then you add 5, you will get 151.
And then, multiply this number by 50. In our example here, you’ll get 7550. The next step is to add your age to this total. For example, if you’re 16 years old, you should add 16 to this total. In our example here, the result will be 7566.
After that, you have to add the number of days in a year, which is 365. In our example here, 365 added to 7566 is 7931.
The final step is this: Subtract 615 from the number that you have. Take away 615 from the total. In our example, 7931 minus 615 is 7316.
The result here—7316—is the trick. The first part of the number is the address and the last part of the number is the age of the person. That is, 73 is the address that we started with, and 16 is the age that we used.
Isn’t it interesting? Do you want to have a try now?
1.How many steps are there in the trick?
A. Four B. Seven C. Nine

From a large elephant to a small mouse, animals live happily together in Disney’s new movie Zootopia. Judy Hopps, the main character, becomes the first rabbit police officer in the city. While solving a mystery, she meets the smart fox, Nick, who helps her with her case, and some other animals like the lion mayor(市长) and a sloth called Flash. Here is something more about the movie.
There are 64 kinds of animals in the movie. Each kind is special. Elephants have trunks(big noses), pigs have snouts; some animals have feet, some have paws; some animals have three fingers while some have two. Judy’s character is a bit different from real rabbits. Real rabbits actually have a split lip(裂唇), but the film makers decided to keep Judy’s lip all together to look nice.
Film makers learned that not all fur of animals is the same. In the movie, some of polar bear fur is clear. It appears white because the light reflects(反射) off of it. Part of fox fur is dark at the root(根部), getting lighter till its red top. They did so to make sure that the animals in Zootopia were believable.
Moreover, a film maker, Nathan Warner with his partners also took a trip to Africa for researching animals. There they had a close watching of different animals. Based on their discovery, these artists added leaves and sticks to animals’ coats like the big sheep. They also make animals’ tears run from the inside corners of eyes down to the outside of the mouth.

After five acting nominations and 22 years of disappointed hopes since his first nomination(for What’s Eating Gilbert Grape in 1993), the 41-year-old actor finally won his first Oscar for his effort in the film The Revenant, which hit Chinese cinemas on March 18.

An article in Life Week wrote, “Compared with DiCaprio’s terrible experience in The Revenant, Robinson Crusoe’s seems as easy and comfortable as a vacation.”
