Thanksgiving Day is near. The first-grade teacher gave her class a fun task——to draw a picture of something for which they are thankful.
Most of the class will celebrate the holiday with turkey and other traditional goodies of season. These, the teacher thinks, will be the subjects of her students’ art. And they are, for most students.
But Douglas makes a different kind of picture. He draws a hand. Nothing else. Just an empty hand. Douglas is a different kind of boy. Most of the time, as other children play together, Douglas just stands closely by his teacher’s side. Everyone can see the sadness he feels from his eyes.
His picture interests other students. Whose hands could it be? A farmer’s? A police officer’s? No one knows. The teacher stops at Douglas desk, bents down, and asks him whose hand it is. The little boy looks away and says, “It’s yours, teacher.”
She remembers the times she has taken his hand and walked with him here and there. How often has she said, “Take my hand, Douglas, we’ll go outside.” or, “Let me show you how to hold your pencil.” Douglas is thankful for his teacher’s hand. It means much to Douglas. He might not always say thanks, but he’ll remember the hand that reaches out. She dries her tears and goes on with her work.
