New Way to Recycle
When Shanghai introduced a new garbage-sorting policy in July last year, the city's residents(居民)took some time to get used to it. They joked that every time they took out their garbage, the staff(工作人员)standing by the bins would ask "What kind of garbage are you?"
Starting on May 1, Beijing joined many Chinese cities by introducing a new garbage- sorting policy, People's Daily reported. Residents should sort their garbage into four groups kitchen, recyclable, hazardous(有害的)and other waste.
These groups are represented(代表)by four different colors of trash bins—green, blue, red and grey. Those who fail to sort their trash correctly may face fines of up to 200 yuan, Xinhua reported.
The way Beijing sorts its trash sounds different from others like Shanghai and Qingdao. These cities use for different groups: wet, recyclable, harmful and dry. Although their names are different, the groups are actually the same. Wet garbage in Shanghai is, in fact, kitchen garbage. And dry garbage is the same as other waste. China Daily reported.
To help residents sort their trash correctly, the Beijing government is offering online guidelines. If people don't know how to throw away garbage, they can search for it on the WeChat account Guanchenglish(管城理事) to find out. By searching a key word or taking a photo, people can immediately find out which group their waste belongs to.

This morning, my teacher introduced a new student to us. He said that Marco, the new student, was from Mexico and he didn’t know English. Clearly, there was a nervous look on his face. Seeing it, I thought of my first day in this school when I moved from Mexico to Utah. It was hard to live in a place that had a different language and different ways of doing things. I was a little nervous because I had trouble understanding the teacher.
When school started, I sat in the back so I wouldn’t draw any attention. Miss Bolling, my new teacher, asked us to introduce ourselves. I went up to a boy named Ivan and told him my name and started talking to him in Spanish. Ivan knew Spanish so he was the only one I could talk to. Ivan helped the teacher translate (翻译) what she was saying to me.
During the lunch break, I didn’t want to go outside. But the rule was that no student in the school could stay inside during the break. After lunch, Miss Bolling took me out and gave me a soccer ball. Then, I started playing it by myself. I was good at soccer, and it attracted (吸引) Ivan. On May 23, Shenzhen introduced tough new rules in order to discourage the “Chinese style of crossing the road”. “Chinese people cross roads without thinking about traffic lights, so long as they are part of a crowd,” said a post on Sina Weibo.
A CCTV news program showed that in only an hour, more than 600 people jumped red lights when crossing a road in Shijiazhuang, Hebei.
Many people say that they jaywalk (乱穿马路) because the red light lasts too long. Such an opinion is supported by a research team at Tongji University. The teamdid research on people’s waiting times at different road crossings for three years. They found that Chinese people would wait for 70 to 90 seconds before they lost their patience. “People are likely to ignore (忽视) the light when the waiting time is longer than they can bear,” said Ni Ying, a member of the research team.
However, a survey on Sina Weibo suggested that people jaywalk mainly because they ignore rules. “I always obey traffic rules. Time is important but safety should come first,” someone wrote on his Weibo.
Many countries give out punishments to jaywalkers. In Singapore, the maximum can be three months in prison. Some Chinese cities have started taking some actions, too. For example, the first three people in a jaywalking group will be fined 50 yuan in Shijiazhuang.
But calling on people to respect rules is more important. To completely solve the problem, everyone should realize the importance of obeying the traffic rules.
