People have been using the wind’s energy for a long, long time. More than 5, 000 years ago, ancient Egyptians made boats powered by the wind. In 200 B.C., people used windmills(风车) in China.
Today, we collect the wind’s energy with wind turbines(涡轮). A turbine is similar to a windmill; it is a very tall tower with two or three blades(叶片) at the top. These blades are turned by the wind. The blades turn a generator(发电机) located inside the tower, which creates power.
Groups of wind turbines are known as wind farms. Wind farms can be found near farmland, in narrow mountain passes, and even in the ocean, where there are stronger winds. Wind farms create power for nearby homes, schools and other buildings.
In places like the Midwest and along coasts, winds can provide cheap power. Another great advantage of wind power is that it is a clean form of energy. Wind turbines do not burn oil or coal and do not pollute the air.
Wind is not always an ideal source of energy, however. Wind speed changes from time to time, depending on the time of day, weather and location. Wind turbines can be also dangerous for bats and birds. These animals cannot always tell how fast the blades are moving and crash into them.

Getting electricity has always been a problem for the 173 people living in Nuevo Saposoa, a small village in Peru, South America. However, things went worse in March 2017 after heavy rains damaged the only power cables(电缆) in the area. The villagers were forced to use oil lamps, which are not only expensive but also dangerous because of the harmful gases they produce.
Luckily, researchers at the University of Technology (UT) in Lima, Peru heard about their problem and found a wonderful method to solve it. They made a lamp that can be powered by plants and soil, both of which can be easily found in the Amazonian rainforest where the village lies. The lamp takes energy from a plant growing in a wooden box and uses it to light up an LED light bulb.
While that may sound amazing and even impossible, the science behind the idea is quite simple. As plants create their food (using the sun’s energy, water and chemicals from the soil), they also produce waste which they return to the soil. Tiny animals in the soil eat this waste and they produce electrons(电子). The UT team put special sticks inside the soil to get the energy and keep it in the lamp’s batteries for later use. The researchers say a single charge(电荷) can power a 50-walt LED light for two hours-enough time for local villagers to get their evening work done.
The university gave ten Plant Lamps to the villagers of Nuevo Saposoa in October 2017. So far, they have been a huge success! Elmer Ramirez, the UT professor who invented the lamp, believes the Plant Lamp could help improve the lives of many people, especially small rainforest communities, 42% of whom have no electricity.

Yu Minhong, president of New Oriental Education, shared his ideas with the young after the English speech competition of the 14th China Daily. Here is some of his advice to young people:
“One suggestion I’d like to give you is that it’s important to do what you like without fear of failure. And the process(过程)of working toward your dreams matters more than the results. Young people should take chances to show off talents. Take competitions like this one as an example: If you are afraid to fail, you’ll never get the chance to stand on the stage and make a speech. Above all, it’s most important to take part.
Another suggestion I want to give you is to read books. It is not easy to keep reading every day. For me, it is much more difficult and challenging to keep reading and taking notes every day than it is to walk 10,000 steps.”
In his speech, Yu also shared his view on life. He chose a different life rather than a more successful one. He uses the famous lines of American poet Robert Frost (1874–1963) to make his point:“Two roads diverged (分叉) in a wood, and I … took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.”Yu pointed out, “Your happiness should not be what others think you should run after, but instead you should decide what it is. It is you who should make choices for your own life.”

Mushrooms are small living things that look like umbrella. They are not plants because they do not have the green material that plants use to make food. Mushrooms get their food from the living or dead plants around them.
A mushroom has two parts: the mycelium(菌丝体) and the fruit. Mycelium is underground and gets food for the mushroom. Sometimes it dies quickly, but if it gets enough food it may live for hundreds of years.
The fruit, umbrella-shaped body, only lives for a few days. Gil(菌褶), small plants under the mushroom's cap, have small spores(孢子) on them. When these spores fall off the mushroom the wind blows them away. If they fall on a warm, wet area a new mycelium develops.
Some mushrooms can be eaten with plenty of vitamin B and also minerals like iron. They are sold at high price. The best-known and most widely eaten is the button mushroom(草菇). They are found in all kinds of food, from pizzas to salads.
Truffles(松露) are mushrooms that grow completely underground. Dogs and pigs can find the places where they grow by using their noses. The mushrooms cost a lot of money and can be eaten in very expensive restaurants around the world.
Some types of mushrooms are poisonous(有毒的). They lead to illness, and a few mushrooms are even deadly. One is a beautiful white mushroom which grows in summer and autumn, Unless you get quick treatment death may come very fast.
It's hard for people to tell between safe and poisonous mushrooms. So,never eat a mushroom you find unless you know what it is.
Mushrooms help plants grow. They help dead material and minerals get back into the soil so that it can be used again.

Aristotle once wrote that “happiness is a state(状态) of activity” In other words, whether you want life-long happiness or a few moments of good cheer, you’ve got to move forward. We’ve found five steps to take toward happiness.
University of Illinois researchers asked nearly 1,200 people how money, volunteer activities and close relationships influenced their happiness. Reported Newsweek’s Sharon Begley on the findings, “The highest levels of happiness are found in the most stable(稳定的) relationships. ” The new study found those who were friends of happy people had a greater chance of being happy themselves.
Singing aloud, talking to a stranger: all may increase a feeling of happiness, according to the study. Participants(参与者)followed the advice for two weeks and felt happier.

These days the teenagers’ sleeping problem is getting more and more serious. World Sleep Day, on 21st March, was created to bring attention to the growing number of sleep problems. Sleep is a natural part of human life, but many people in the modern world don’t realize it’s very important. As a result, sleep problems are quite common.
In 2011, scientists at the University of Athens in Greece did a survey(调查) of over 35,000 people in 10 countries around the world, The survey found that many people suffer the effects of poor quality sleep, some even can’t fall asleep and often wake up in the middle of the night. The main reasons of the problems are pressures (压力) from school or work and a fast pace (节奏) of life, but noise pollution and light pollution also affect sleep and cause poor quality sleep.
The survey also found that large numbers of people find it hard to sleep at night. The short term effects of this are tiredness and trouble concentrating (专心). If this happens for a long time, the risk of gaining weight and having a heart attack may increase.
There are many things you can do to improve the quality of your sleep. First, you should have good sleep habits. Try to go to bed and wake up around the same time each day. You also need to make your bedroom a cool, dark, quiet place to sleep so that heat, light and noise do not disturb you. At night, you should also avoid things that include caffeine(咖啡因), such as chocolate, coffee, tea and many soft drinks, as caffeine may keep you from sleeping.
Getting a good night’s sleep is important for everyone. By following the advice above, you can rest better at night and work better during the day.

Clothing(服装) is a language. We can look at the traditional clothing to know more about culure.
Africa has a long history and a rich culture, and this is shown in traditional dress. The three colours—red, gold and green, are often used in the clothing. The first colour represents the blood of millions of people who fought for freedom; the second, rich resources of the African earth; and the third, the grassland of home.
Because clothing has strong social meanings, people are very careful in choosing what to wear. It would be a serious mistake to wear the wrong clothes, or to dress in the wrong way. For example, in Ghana, a woman should wear her waistband (腰带) differently according to the importance of the social event.
Traditional dress also tells us about everyday life. African designs are famous for loose (宽松的) clothing. The temperature there can be very high during the daytime but very low at night, so it requires that the clothes are comfortable for daily life.
Today although more and more young people like wearing Western clothes, especially in big cities in Africa, traditional African dress is still quite valuable. This is because it has deep cultural meanings.

Politeness(礼貌) is a mark of civilization. The sooner children learn this, the better. In any case, a lot can be completed by a smile and good manners.
Like it or not, our adult lives will be consumed(消费,消耗) by the struggle for money, but we don’t make an effort to teach children how to manage it. So our schools have a duty to teach them this ability from the beginning.
If we agree that the use of education is to prepare us for life, then there is very little time to waste. So, while we can, we ought to try our best to teach children something really useful. Here is what our schools should teach.
We’re likely to accept something we are told, but that’s not what educated people do. Educated people are reasonable (理性的)and they look at facts. If our schools teach nothing else, they should at least teach critical(批判性的)thinking.
Children should learn to take care of their health. They should know that if they eat junk food(垃圾食品), they will become fat and unhealthy. They should be very clear about what happens to their bodies when they drink or smoke.
All of us are part of society. We have rights and duties. We ought to understand what they are. We have to know a little bit of our history and geography, because we need to have an environment in which to connect to the people around us.
How will we test students on these? We can’t. But that’s not a reason to avoid teaching what is important. Our schools should spend every moment they have telling this to our children: “This is life, this is what you are going to face, and this is how you deal with it.”
