Most people have mixed feelings about mice and avoid them if they can. Bart Weetjens thinks that we must treat mice as heroes.
He started an organization called APOPO in Tanzania. Bart's organization trains African giant mice to smell the ground in order to find underground landmines (地雷) left in the area during past wars. Many of these landmines are still active. They often explode (爆炸), killing and injuring thousands of people each year. Villagers avoid places where the dangerous landmines are. But much of this land could be used as valuable farmland if the mines weren't there. These mice are helping villagers get their land back.
The giant mice are never mistreated. None of them die from doing their work. They even have sun block(防晒霜) put on their ears and tails while they work. And when they find a landmine, they get a treat!
While mice aren't usually seen as heroes, some animals, like dogs, often are. There are many stories about dogs that save lives, but dogs have another lifesaving skill that we're still learning about. Just like landmine—smelling mice, dogs have an amazing sense of smell. They're now being trained to smell out chemicals from the body which are connected to certain illnesses, sometimes even before doctors or medical tests can find them!
So, the next time you see a mouse or dog, don't be afraid of it anymore__Remember, these animal heroes can save lives.

Antigua in Guatemala(危地马拉) is a place where time stopped three centuries ago. It is one of the most beautiful cities in Central America. In this city, you can feel what life was like in the past.
You can see the buildings that people designed in the 1700s. You can walk in the streets, see the Cathedral of San Jose, and visit the church.
I have visited this city several times because I like it so much, but I will never forget my first time in this city. I was 12 years old when I first discovered the streets covered with small stones, the houses with big windows and beautiful gardens, the colonial(殖民地的) buildings, the people from different cultures walking around the central park, and the natives wearing the typical multicolored clothes and talking with the tourists to try to sell their products.
I still remember the taste of the candies from the Kona Maria Gordillo Shop and the smell of hot chocolate and banana bread from the Dona Luisa Chicothencalh Restaurant.
Antigua mixes the past with the present, and I think this is one of the reasons that make people who visit this city feel delighted. To me, thinking about Antigua is like travelling back to another epoch(时代). If you have the opportunity to travel to Guatemala and also want to travel back to colonial times, you must visit this beautiful city.
1.The writer likes Antigua so much that he has ________.
A.lived there B.worked there C.visited there many times D.planned to live there
2.The writer bought________ at the Kona Maria Gordillo Shop.
A.candies B.chocolate C.bananas D.bread

4.What is the best title for this passage?
A.A Beautiful City in Central America
B.A Beautiful Building in Central America
C.The Food of Central America
D.The Culture of Central America

Spiders, ants, flies and bees—these are just some of the insect world. Most of us avoid them as much as possible, but it's not easy to do. You find them everywhere. Nearly 75 percent of all animals are insects.
Many people think insects are scary. Long, thin legs and big, round eyes. Millions of dollars are spent every year on experiments to destroy them. To many people, they're a nuisance—something to get rid of. They're different from us, so it's easy to see why many people fear them. However, these little animals have some amazing and special abilities, which are good for human beings.
Insects are natural recyclers. When living material dies, insects have a major role in helping to break down this material and return it to the soil. Without insects, that dead material would take a long time to decompose. Insects speed up the process, turning rubbish into useful things for the soil.
Insects contribute to our food supply too. It's hard to imagine growing enough food to feed us all in a world without insects. They help plants reproduce by moving pollen from flower to flower.
In medical labs, insects are helping us know the secrets of genetics. Many generations can be studied in a short time.
Insects truly are our friends. A world without insects would look a whole lot different. Think about that the next time you see a bee buzzing quietly over a garden.
1.Why do many people avoid insects as much as possible?

为什么我们不一样
Have you ever wondered why you are the way you are? What makes you different from your brothers and sisters?
People have asked these questions for centuries, and researchers are trying to answer them. One idea they're thinking is that birth order influences the person we become. In general, the oldest child is described as confident, organized, responsible, and determined(有决心的)to get what he or she wants. Oldest children are seen as born leaders. Because they're the oldest, their younger brothers and sisters sometimes see them as bossy (专横的), or too willing to tell other people what to do.
The middle child may be described as being competitive in order to get more attention. They sometimes feel that their family give them less attention because they are in the middle. Because middle children tend to avoid conflict(冲突), they can be friendly and easygoing. They are usually more influenced by their friends than by their family, perhaps because they get more attention from their friends.
The youngest child is described as the baby of the family. They can be spoiled(宠爱) by their parents, who spend a lot of time with them and often give them what they want. Youngest children enjoy being the center of attention, and they are seen as outgoing, openminded, and likely to take risks.
What if you're an only child? Many people think that a child with no brothers or sisters grows up wanting lots of attention. Some think they're selfish, or unwilling to share with others.
1.According to the researchers, ________ has a great influence on what we will become.
A.the order that we are born
B.the time when we are born
C.the job our parents are doing
D.the friends we are playing with
2.Which of the following word can't be used to describe middle children?
A.Competitive. B.Friendly.
C.Easygoing. D.Selfish.
3.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The oldest child is seen as the baby of family.
B.The middle child is considered as born leaders.
C.The youngest child gets more attention from family.
D.The only child is easier to share with other people.
4.The passage mainly talks about ________.
A.how to get along with other members of our family
B.why we are different from our brothers and sisters
C.what you should do when you have many friends
D.who the best child is in a big family

Just don’t want to work
Summer holiday is over. How many of you have stayed up late to finish your homework over the last few days? What about the school day? Do you start working on your homework right away when you get home from school?
A lot of people often put off difficult or big tasks until they must be done. They’re called procrastinators(拖延症患者). Procrastination is a common problem for many people, in fact. Sometimes it just feels easier to wait until the last minute to do certain things. However, this is not a good thing, as you have to work harder and faster if you wait until there is little time left. This means procrastination makes you in hurry, so you can’t do things better. For example, you will have a test tomorrow morning, you chat with your friends online, thinking about you still have time to prepare. But at last, you have to go over your lessons in a short time because it is very late when you take out your book. Of course, it cut down the quality of work. You should have done your work better, don’t you?
I myself am a bit of a procrastinator. But every morning when I wake up, I list three important things I want to do or I have to do, then write them down on paper. I kept on trying this for a long time and it really helps me a lot. It can be hard to get started sometimes. But once I do, the work gets done quickly and with little stress(压力).
Everyone procrastinates from time to time. It’s a natural thing to do. You don’t have to blame(责备) yourself. After all, we still need time to relax and take a break from our busy lives. Just make sure you still get your homework done on time!
1.Procrastinators are people who _______.
A.don’t do their homework during holidays
B.often finish their tasks earlier than others
C.put off their work until the last minute
D.are not responsible for their own work
2.The third paragraph is mainly about _______.
A.what the writer does to stop procrastinating

A.it is hard for people to finish work on time
B.procrastination is not a serious problem
C.people feel sad after putting off their work
D.people should relax before doing their work

Some young people have interesting and well-paid jobs. Many successful athletes are young. Football and tennis stars are usually under 35. Older people usually cannot play these sports very well. They cannot move fast enough. Golf, however, is a good sport for older people.
Most people work until they are 60 or 65 years old. Then they retire and have a lot of spare time. Some people never retire though. These people usually have very interesting jobs. Writers, artists, musicians and actors usually work until they die. Their work is their life.
