When I was in high school, I worked parttime helping Dad sell fruits and vegetables at a market. One day, as I was preparing the fruits, a little boy came by with his mom and sister. He was about eight years old, and the girl, five or six. They were looking at the fruits in front of me. I heard the kids say to their mom(in French),“They're good!” I knew it was French, because I can speak and understand it.
Then I noticed how the mom was picking the fruits. At first I thought she was really looking at the fruits because she was facing them, but then I noticed how much she had to feel and smell each one as she picked them out. And she often asked her son if it looked okay, but looked way above where his face was. Putting what I saw together, I was sure she was blind.
Both of the kids continued to help their mom pick out the fruits. The son made sure the fruits were not obviously bad, and the daughter handed them to her mom. The woman then felt each one and smiled, and the daughter would put them into their basket. The kids were smiling while helping their mom pick the fruits out.
Their smile and gentle manner moved me in a way that never happened before. It was so beautiful to see such young kids so willingly help. Most kids that age would be picking out candies or toys in a store for themselves, instead of helping their mom pick out fruits, as the two kids did.
It was great to witness the moment, but not so great because I didn't tell the mom how beautiful her children were in their language. This is what I regret to this day.

Spiders, ants, flies and bees—these are just some of the insect world. Most of us avoid them as much as possible, but it's not easy to do. You find them everywhere. Nearly 75 percent of all animals are insects.
Many people think insects are scary. Long, thin legs and big, round eyes. Millions of dollars are spent every year on experiments to destroy them. To many people, they're a nuisance—something to get rid of. They're different from us, so it's easy to see why many people fear them. However, these little animals have some amazing and special abilities, which are good for human beings.
Insects are natural recyclers. When living material dies, insects have a major role in helping to break down this material and return it to the soil. Without insects, that dead material would take a long time to decompose. Insects speed up the process, turning rubbish into useful things for the soil.
Insects contribute to our food supply too. It's hard to imagine growing enough food to feed us all in a world without insects. They help plants reproduce by moving pollen from flower to flower.
In medical labs, insects are helping us know the secrets of genetics. Many generations can be studied in a short time.

西红柿——水果还是蔬菜?
Tomatoes are one of the world's oldest foods. They were discovered by the Indians of South America thousands of years ago. The first tomatoes were very small. By the time the Europeans brought them to Europe in the 1500s, they were larger. They looked more like the tomatoes we eat today.
When tomatoes first arrived in Italy, they were known as “love apples”. Italians believed that if you ate a tomato, you would easily fall in love.
In the United States, people believed that tomatoes were poisonous(有毒的), and that you would die immediately upon eating one. It wasn't easy to persuade(劝说) people otherwise.
That is, until 1820, when Robert Johnson decided to prove people wrong. He announced that he would publicly eat one bushel(蒲式耳) of tomatoes—about 50. A huge crowd showed up to watch. They were sure that Mr. Johnson was going to die. Of course, he survived. And the tomato went on to gain a big place in the American diet.
In the beginning, people argued whether tomatoes were a fruit or a vegetable. From a purely scientific point of view they are a fruit. A fruit is the ripened ovary(子房) of any plant that makes seeds. However, this didn't stop most people from calling tomatoes a vegetable. They reasoned that tomatoes are eaten with the main meal—just like vegetables. They are not eaten as dessert, like other fruits such as apples or bananas. Therefore,__they__thought__the__tomato__must__surely__be__a__vegetable.
Fruit or vegetable, tomatoes have survived a long time. They are not likely to disappear any time soon. They are just too good to eat.
