Ever feel like no one really understands you? Well “ Pepper” could be about to change all that. Pepper is the first robot to read human feelings. Using its emotion recognition functions, Pepper can react to people when it is near them-- making jokes, dancing and even singing in Japanese.
The man-like robot looks like a small girl. It is four-feet tall with a tablet computer set to its chest. It has human-like hands, a girl-like body and baby-like voice. It was shown to curious people in Tokyo stores on Friday by Softbank, a Japanese robotics company.
Pepper can examine facial expressions(面部表情),human voice and signs, then make an answer. Pepper is designed to be a family robot, but it isn’t like Rosie who can do housework on the cartoon. Pepper is used at the home or the store, where we provide fun and entertainment.
Pepper gets power from love inside a family. Not only is he making jokes, making them laugh, it can also help people when they are in trouble. In a natural accident, it can help make those people who are sad or lonely feel relaxed, encourage them or make them laugh.
Pepper goes on sale in Japan for around $2,000 in February 2015. For now, several Peppers are at Softbank stores in Tokyo for people to visit. The creators say before selling Peppers, they want the robots to store more knowledge, to do better in getting along with human.

Some people seem to have extraordinary (非凡的) memories. Zheng Aiqiang, a “memory athlete” on TV show Super Brain (《最强大脑》), can remember 2,660 numbers in just one hour!
You would think people like this have special brains. But according to a recent study by researchers from the United States and the Netherlands (荷兰), the brain structure (结构) of ordinary(普通的) people and 23 of the world’s leading memory athletes shows no difference.
That’s because good memories can be trained. New research in the journal Neuron (《神经元》) suggests that you can become a super memorizer with just six weeks of hard training, reported The Guardian.
Researchers found that a technique (技巧) called loci, invented by the ancient Greeks, can greatly help improve memory.
By using loci, you are using your imagination to improve the brain’s memory networks. You can link (关联) something you need to remember with a place that you know very well. For example, to remember a list of numbers, imagine yourself walking through your house. Each thing is linked to a number. For example, zero could be the handle (把手) on the door and five could be the painting on the wall.
“Not everyone can become a (memory) champion. But everyone using the technique can improve a lot from the level they’re at,” said Boris Konrad, one of the researchers in the study.

In the village of Kila Raipur, people would like to take part in their unusual Olympics. Even though the villagers don’t spend millions of dollars on the sport, these games seem to be much more fun than the real Olympics!
Now in its 77th year, the sport took place in the village Kila Raipur in an Indian state from January 31st to February 3rd. A villager by the name of Inder Singh Grewal wanted to organize an event which would allow farmers to show their skills, keep their culture and just have a good time.
Over the years, it has become popular and now includes not just the farmers, but also some of the world’s finest athletes from 7 to 70 years of age. In keeping up with times, there are different modern sports, such as hockey and race and traditional ones such as tug-of-war and even Kabaddi.
However, the ones that interest the biggest crowds are the special sports like the bull(公牛)races. In the races, bulls run at high speed against each other, with athletes balanced on small carts(手推车). Then there is the game that challenges athletes to lift bicycles with their teeth. Another sport is using their teeth to pull a car. If that is not special enough for you to get excited about this, there is a competition that allows a tractor(拖拉机) to run over an athlete’s body!
All in all, the sport not only tests the skills and strength of its athletes, but also cheers up people. The best part is that everyone, old or young, can take part in the sport. So it’s no wonder that over 4,000 athletes and over a million watchers run into the small village of Kila Raipur, each year!

Some people seem to know how to start a conversation with anyone anywhere. If you’re not one of these people, don’t be sad. Here are some easy ways to help you make a conversation with someone new.
Say something about the surroundings (周围的事物).
If you’re at a party, for example, you could say, “I love this song”, or “The food is great. Have you tried the chicken?”
Ask an open-ended question.
The question requires (要求) more than just a yes or no answer. You can ask a question that begins with one of the 5W1H: who, where, when, what, why, or how. Most people hope to have a memory which helps them succeed in study, work and life. Can memory be improved? Luckily, hundreds of studies in the past 50 years have already given us a definite answer.
A healthy lifestyle keeps your brain young and memory sharp. First of all, it is necessary to have a healthy diet. Eating more food rich in Vitamin B and Vitamin E, such as vegetables and lean meat, helps you have a better memory. Doing exercise can keep your brain alive, too. Proper exercise provides much needed oxygen for the brain. Running, riding a bike, swimming and even walking two or three times a week are helpful. Moreover, getting enough sleep is important. Only when your brain gets a good rest, can it work well. The healthier your lifestyle is, the better your memory will become, but do not expect a sudden change — it takes a long time to make a difference.
Memory skills help you remember things better. The following three are the most widely used. Chunking is a way of remembering a piece of information by cutting it into smaller ones. For example, to memorize a ten-digit telephone number 2127983630, you can divide the digits into three groups: first 212, then 798, and lastly 3630. This method is far more effective than remembering a string of 10 digits. Organization means organizing information into groups of the same kind. For example, trees, grass and flowers are plants; tigers, pandas, horses and cows are animals. Imagery is remembering newly learnt information by us ing your imagination and connecting it with something that you are familiar with.
However, memory skills will hardly work if you don’t understand the information. Only a regular review can make the memory last long. That is why students are always advised to go over what they have learnt after one day and then after three days, and then use it as regularly as possible.
Human brains are like muscles that need nutrients and exercise to become stronger. If you make a few lifestyle changes and try some memory skills, you can certainly improve your memory.
1.Can memory be improved according to the passage?
2.What does proper exercise provide?
3.How can you remember the newly learnt information?
4.Why are students always advised to go over what they have learnt?
5.What is the passage mainly about?

China has been practicing the rule that asks people to use their real names when registering(注册) for Internet service. The rules also ask Internet companies operating in China to remove the untrue information which the web users ever gave.
Chinese lawmakers passed the rule on December 28th,2012, at the end of a five-day meeting of the Standing Committee of the NPC.
The new rules say network service providers must well check up the information given by users. The providers have been ordered to stop the spread of illegal (违法的)information, and take steps to deal with the problem. The Xinhua News says those steps include removing the information from the Internet and then reporting it to the government.
Chinese officials say the rules are aimed at protecting the personal information of Internet users and stopping false information such as junk e-mail. However, some people say such new real-name rules will make people less likely to report illegal actions for fear of possible action against them.
Duncan Clark is an adviser to Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business. He lives in Beijing. He says, “For a long time we’ve seen the Internet being used to report illegal action, but the new rules seem to stop those reports.”
But the good news is through real-name registration the Internet crime among teenagers will be controlled.

Why are so many people so afraid to fail? Quite simply because no one tells us how to fail so that failure (失败) becomes an experience that means growth. We forget that failure is part of the human condition and that every person has the right to fail.
Most parents work hard at preventing failure or protecting their children from the knowledge that they have failed. One way is to lower standards. When a child finishes making a table, the mother describes it as “perfect” even though it doesn’t stand still. Another way is to blame (责怪) others. If John fails in science, his teacher is unfair or stupid.
There’s a problem with the two ways. It makes a child unprepared for life in the real world. The young need to learn that no one can be best at everything, no one can win all the time, and that it’s possible to enjoy a game even when you don’t win. A child who’s not invited to a birthday party, who doesn’t make the honour list on the baseball team, feels terrible, of course. But parents should not offer a quick consolations (安慰), prize or say, “It doesn’t matter.” Because it does. The young should be allowed to experience failure and be helped to come out of it.
Failure never gives people pleasure. It hurts both grown-ups and children. But it can be really good to your life when you learn to use it. You must learn to ask “Why did I fail?” Don’t blame anyone else. Ask yourself what you did wrong and how you can improve. If someone else can help, don’t be shy about asking them.
1.What can failure become in fact?

2.How many ways do most parents choose to prevent failure and protect their children?

3.Who can always win according to the third paragrah?
